2nd Date, he embarrassed me in a restaurant

Am I over reacting here? I suspect I might be.

1st date went well, 2nd date today. We went for for late/early dinner. nice restaurant. We got talking about Austria, Switzerland etc and he said “I can yodel”. I just laughed so he said “I can show you?” So I laughed again and said “in the middle of a restaurant?”

He then started yodelling loudly. I swear everyone turned around and looked at us. I’m normally pretty passive and would usually just quietly die inside but on this occasion I was beyond embarrassed, absolutely mortified and snapped “Shush!”

He laughed and said “what?” So I said “seriously? We’re in the middle of a restaurant”. He said sorry (whilst still laughing) and tried to change the subject but I couldn’t get past it. Who does that?

I don’t like being centre of attention and yes I embarrass easy. I ended up going home early as I just couldn’t stop thinking about it. He’s messaged me since asking if everything is ok, I don’t think he’s actually associating my change in mood to the yodelling incident!! Making me think maybe I’m over reacting??

I'd be mildly embarrassed but think it was funny and that he was embracing life. It wouldn't bother me really.

Yeah, i may think for a split second a bit odd and if it a very regular thing of being really loud it wouldn't work for me but as a one off I would just have moved on

AprilShowers25 · 31/05/2025 02:04

I think some people can pull this kind of thing off and others just can’t 😬

TheCoralMoose · 31/05/2025 01:12

I would have found it cringey but i wouldnt dismiss him i would try another date if he did something daft again game over.

Some people are attention seeking.
I remember being at a wedding when i was 19.
I was seated next to a middle aged couple both dead loud and chavvy.
They kept touching each other up talking about sex.
When the food arrived they both hand fed each other including a slice of the cake.
I vowed never to be like that.

Run like the wind. Seriously.

He absolutely knew he embarrassed you and is testing your boundaries. If you still see him, he knows he can escalate it.

This is what I think. He wanted to see how you’d react.

I’m not sure you know what psychopathy is. He obviously just thought it was funny.

You know psychosis and psychopathy are two different things?

I don't think this is real, but I would probably find it funny. I don't find the misuse of the word psychotic funny though.

outerspacepotato · 31/05/2025 00:26

Was he high?

Did he yodel well?

Shitmonger · 31/05/2025 00:24

Yodeling in a restaurant and OP hasn’t returned? Was someone angling for Classics? 😂

Hysterectomynext · 30/05/2025 23:59

wizzywig · 30/05/2025 19:46

On one hand,, if I were another person in the restaurant I'd be dying with laughter. But in your situation, I wouldn't be seeing him again. I'd fear the yodeling would surface again at an inopportune moment. Although I don't know when is a good time for a wee yodel

High on a hill

I often wonder why it's always the people who do mad socially unconventional things and behave like the zany friend in a romantic comedy who get credited with embracing life, seizing the day, living in the moment etc. Maybe OP's embracing life by having pleasant evenings in nice restaurants and not forcing other people to take part in her attention-seeking antics, you know, like a normal adult.

Because ‘Whatever you do, never attract other people’s attention’ is about the most uninteresting life ambition, ever?

Also was he good at yodelling because it’s quite difficult to do well

This is key information OP!

He's and extrovert - you're an introvert and self conscious. Sometimes the mix works, but maybe not for you. I'd say - give it a chance, another couple of dates maybe and see how it goes....

Pinkflowersinavase · 30/05/2025 23:08

Sounds a bit crazy doesn't he? Or immature at the least....

tillyandmilly · 30/05/2025 22:58

This would put me right off !

TMGM · 30/05/2025 22:57

YANBU, assuming it was loud enough I would be a bit annoyed if I was at a restaurant and someone the next table over did this while I was trying to have a nice meal. As a date this would personally put me off, but on the other hand at least it seems he’s not uptight and doesn’t take himself too seriously.

Ilikeadrink14 · 30/05/2025 22:56

ThrowawayAccount29 · 30/05/2025 21:58

Bloody hell, you’re a bit uptight 😂 I’d think that was bloody hilarious if my date started yodelling. No wonder you’re single.

Ouch!!

Yakacm · 30/05/2025 22:55

I think he's done you a favour by revealing his...err, quirky side, so early on, save you a lot of time. I'm sure there are women out there who'd find his behaviour endearing, and i guess there are worse things he could have done. At least you get a funny story out of it🤔

Beachesandpeaches · 30/05/2025 22:54

Probably not compatible.
It may not be for you (yodelling in public is rather niche !)
But anyone remember the episode of First Dates with Tim and Sarah? He was pretty off the wall (the one who introduced himself with the famous Rik Mayall joke ‘what does a man with a two foot cock have for breakfast? well this morning I had a boiled egg’..). She found him quite hilarious but equally could have found him mortifying.

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 30/05/2025 22:53

Seems very attention seeking to me. It would put me off him to be honest.

PluckyBamboo · 30/05/2025 22:50

I would have been so embarrassed on your behalf if I had been in the restaurant. It also shows a lack of social etiquette and disregard of other people which would put me right off.

Jellyrols · 30/05/2025 22:48

Total twat.
Doesn't know how to behave in public, and I certainly couldn't be arsed to be explaining basic shit to him.
Attention seeking idiot.
Dump.
Yanbu.

You’d have to laugh.

Mn, where it’s apparently perfectly normal to be married to a farting, porn-using lout who is incapable of looking after his own children, cooking, cleaning his own house, remembering birthdays or doing laundry, or having a conversation beyond a grunt because he’s absent on some mysterious ‘hobby’.

But no, the real villain is an apparently nice date who, the horror, draws other people’s attention in a restaurant. By yodelling.

Its possible to disagree with both you know.

SeaFloor · 30/05/2025 22:43

BrickBiscuit · 30/05/2025 22:25

Quite so. If I was one of the other diners, I would feel extremely uncomfortable. Being so noisy in a ’nice’ restaurant that others turn and look at you is embarrassing for everyone. This is who he is - let him find someone else. He needs someone equally inconsiderate and lacking self-awareness and social skills, and you need someone better.

You’d have to laugh.
