2nd Date, he embarrassed me in a restaurant

Am I over reacting here? I suspect I might be.

1st date went well, 2nd date today. We went for for late/early dinner. nice restaurant. We got talking about Austria, Switzerland etc and he said “I can yodel”. I just laughed so he said “I can show you?” So I laughed again and said “in the middle of a restaurant?”

He then started yodelling loudly. I swear everyone turned around and looked at us. I’m normally pretty passive and would usually just quietly die inside but on this occasion I was beyond embarrassed, absolutely mortified and snapped “Shush!”

He laughed and said “what?” So I said “seriously? We’re in the middle of a restaurant”. He said sorry (whilst still laughing) and tried to change the subject but I couldn’t get past it. Who does that?

I don’t like being centre of attention and yes I embarrass easy. I ended up going home early as I just couldn’t stop thinking about it. He’s messaged me since asking if everything is ok, I don’t think he’s actually associating my change in mood to the yodelling incident!! Making me think maybe I’m over reacting??

Attention seeking and too stupid to understand how it affects people around him… Thank you, next!

He comes across as someone who doesn't take himself too seriously fair play to him . You get embarrassed and shushed him. Maybe he thinks you are stuck up and don't know how to have laugh. If I went on a date with a man I just met and he sushed me I would be gone. You need to learn to lighten up maybe

Please note the OP reads "… I swear everyone turned around and looked at us”, not “… I swear everyone turned around, looked at us and joined in the laughter”.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 31/05/2025 09:46

Anyone else imagining him in lederhosen and a little hat?

There is a positive - you didn't find out about his yodelling skills at your wedding reception.

Or wedding night.

Completely agree. The whacky out there ‘ooh I’m mad me’ people are not just embracing life, they’re making it all about them.

Not being a show off doesn’t equal dull and boring, introverted, uptight, self conscious or any of the other things the OP has been called.

Most people manage to have full enjoyable lives without having to make themselves centre of attention in a restaurant where other people are trying to have a nice, relaxing night out.

Agree. Introverted doesn’t mean you hide yourself in a cupboard refusing to socialise or speak to people. They can be good company and a good laugh and sociable, just not 24/7 look at meeeee!

I often wonder why it's always the people who do mad socially unconventional things and behave like the zany friend in a romantic comedy who get credited with embracing life, seizing the day, living in the moment etc. Maybe OP's embracing life by having pleasant evenings in nice restaurants and not forcing other people to take part in her attention-seeking antics, you know, like a normal adult.

He sounds like a bit of a prat. And if he's annoying you that quickly and has views on social behaviour that clearly don't match yours then it's just going to keep annoying you. And you'll annoy him. Do yourself and him a favour and go out with someone else.

Exactly! No thought to the other diners either. It's so self indulgent and 'look at me'.

booksnbaking · 31/05/2025 08:58

But what kind of yodelling? Alpine? Swiss? Cowboy?
So many questions, so few answers.

LoafofSellotape · 31/05/2025 08:01

I'm sure I've read about a date yodelling before, perhaps it's the same chap?!

TENSsion · 31/05/2025 07:08

Throw him back in the sea.
Single me would have really loved this. I love confidence. He’ll find someone on his wavelength.
You’re just incompatible

MayaPinion · 31/05/2025 06:38

Sign me up for Yodelling Restaurant Guy. That sounds epic! And much more fun than talking about boring jobs or kids or whatever.

pilates · 31/05/2025 06:34

Perhaps you are not compatible but I would give him another chance.

Bravemama · 31/05/2025 06:24

Sometimes men do stupid things when they get over excited. Also, I suspect he was trying to make you laugh but went a bit too far. He won't know that you really didn't enjoy that if you aren't honest with him about it, so try and do your best in saying please never ever do that again!

Id go on another date, if that was the only thing that didn't go great!

my now DH drank something on our 2nd date that went straight through him after we left the restaurant. He did this ridiculous over the top 'walk' holding his bladder all the way to a 24 hour tesco the other side of town to relive himself. I was really embarrassed as I didn't know him all that well but he had me howling with laughter and I couldn't help but admire his confidence in what was a really awkward moment. Reader, he honesty didn't nearly make it but we dont talk about that!

StuckUpPrincess · 31/05/2025 06:04

My ex-husband used to embarrass me a lot in public. I think all the posters saying how hilarious they would have found it don't really know what it's like to have an embarrassing partner.

StuckUpPrincess · 31/05/2025 06:02

Just went onto YouTube and refreshed my memory of yodelling. God, what an awful sound. Even when done well, it's a dreadful noise.

PlayingDevilsAdvocateisinteresting · 31/05/2025 06:01

wizzywig · 30/05/2025 19:46

On one hand,, if I were another person in the restaurant I'd be dying with laughter. But in your situation, I wouldn't be seeing him again. I'd fear the yodeling would surface again at an inopportune moment. Although I don't know when is a good time for a wee yodel

When you are halfway up a mountain that is bare of snow??? 🤭

StuckUpPrincess · 31/05/2025 05:51

The best lover I ever had possessed exquisite manners both inside the bedroom and outside. I think that anyone who lacks the social graces to know that yodelling in a restaurant is horrendous on so many levels is going to be a disaster in the bedroom.

  • What he did is just flat-out embarrassing.
  • Also rude to diners who might have hearing aids, which magnify awful noises like that.
  • Arrogant enough to think he can yodel in the middle of a restaurant and still be just as attractive to you.
  • Arrogant enough not to think or care if he might embarrass you.

I am cringing with second-hand embarrassment on your behalf. I'll bet he's awkward and embarrassing in other areas of life, too.

I'm sorry, I could never, after that. I'd rather be single for a million fucking years than date someone who yodels loudly in the middle of a restaurant.

cordeliavorkosigan · 31/05/2025 05:38

Can this please be the 2025 version of T-Rex-ing in the supermarket? Yodelling in the restaurant!!
Hilarious.
I'd be embarrassed but also highly entertained, op.

That would be a nodel from me.

Good one 👏😂.

Because ‘Whatever you do, never attract other people’s attention’ is about the most uninteresting life ambition, ever?

Doesn't have to be extreme opposites though, yodelling on a date isn't the measure of of a fulfilled life, same as not wanting to attract attention doesnt equate to boring.

Theres a time and place.

He sounds like the sort who plays his music on speaker and has loud conversations on public transport.

BrickBiscuit · 31/05/2025 04:16

SeaFloor · 30/05/2025 22:43

You’d have to laugh.

Mn, where it’s apparently perfectly normal to be married to a farting, porn-using lout who is incapable of looking after his own children, cooking, cleaning his own house, remembering birthdays or doing laundry, or having a conversation beyond a grunt because he’s absent on some mysterious ‘hobby’.

But no, the real villain is an apparently nice date who, the horror, draws other people’s attention in a restaurant. By yodelling.

You miss the point. Both can be unacceptable.

BrickBiscuit · 31/05/2025 04:13

ThrowawayAccount29 · 30/05/2025 21:58

Bloody hell, you’re a bit uptight 😂 I’d think that was bloody hilarious if my date started yodelling. No wonder you’re single.

So why's he single too then?
