Called “greedy” at work

Yesterday we had a lunch buffet for a staff member who is going on mat leave. Usual routine is the buffet comes out at lunch time and everyone brings something such as sandwiches, sausage rolls, flapjacks, etc etc … basic party food. We do a little gift and card giving presentation then everyone gets tucked into the buffet. After lunch the food stays there and people just pick at it during the afternoon whilst they work.

So after lunch we got back to work and I walked across and got a few more sandwiches (other people were also going back up). An hour or so later I went back and got a few more bits - certainly not platefuls - just a couple of sandwiches, a couple of (bite size) flapjacks and a muffin.

We leave at 5pm. At 4pm someone said “there is so much food left”. That’s all I heard so I assumed it needed using up so I went back and got a few more bits. At this point someone said “Jesus Christ Beth, are you hungry?!”

I said “well it needs using up doesn’t it?” And laughed trying to keep it light hearted. Someone else then said “there is going to be none left for people to take home! No need to be greedy with it”.

Long story short it was apparently agreed that whatever was left would be taken home by those with kids. I did not hear this. I said I hadn’t heard this so someone said “Well no, you won’t have” and rolled their eyes.

was I really out of order here?? The food was there, lots of it. Nobody else was bothering with it. I’m embarrassed but I still don’t really think I did anything wrong? It’s not like I scoffed it all as soon as it came out.

Me too. I thought it was a zombie thread at first. Bizarre. OP must enjoy watching all the wound up responses about food.

Since she is not returning I think you are right. I am glad someone else remembered the other thread. 😂

thestudio · 29/05/2025 15:20

I think this is the kind of thing that people get angry about when they are already angry and are looking for a reason to express it.

I’m sure I’ve read this exact thing before.

Surely its just as greedy people taking loads home for their kids. I do wonder if you have a bit of form when the person says "you won't have will you" are they implying you often eat a lot of the buffet...?
I wouldn't take it to heart, it sounds like a misunderstanding and you just missed the bit where people wanted the food left, instead you fairly thought it needed eating up. I'd have assumed the same as you tbh, I've not heard of people taking this type of stuff home unless it's prepackaged or something like haribo. Not sure my kids would want leftover lunch sandwiches tbh.

VickiFromAmsterdam · 29/05/2025 15:11

The story so far is eat, I’m not sure that included sandwiches, then a few more sandwiches … & another few sandwiches. This is a buffet & the food can be tempting, so we’d usually eat more than we would if it was a set meal. The food was there to be eat & you gobbled it up. 2 people mentioned this, are they usually bitches?

UnctuousUnicorns · 29/05/2025 14:35

I think we need more information, OP. What was the diameter of the plates? Was the bread thin, medium or thick sliced? Were the sandwiches cut into halves, quarters or eighths? Crusts cut off or left on? Were they sparsely or generously filled? Approximate diameter of the muffin? We really need to know these details before we can accurately pass judgment. 🤔

Ready. 🕵️‍♀️

FuckityFux · 29/05/2025 15:08

Surely the definition of greedy in this instance are the people insisting on taking other people’s food contributions home to feed their OWN KIDS!

The leftovers clearly belong to the people that brought in the food. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Isobel201 · 29/05/2025 15:08

I haven't read all the replies, but to those saying going back 4 times is a lot - you haven't seen the plate sizes the OP had. When I was in the office with buffets out, sometimes I'll go for a wander whilst on a screen break (five minutes every hour) and just take one or two items depending on their size. That can easily be done 4 times and nobody batted an eyelid.

Cherrytree86 · 29/05/2025 15:03

Going back 3 times is a solid effort OP

BobbyBiscuits · 29/05/2025 15:03

I'd just say I'm taking it home for my nieces/nephews/cousins/elderly parents/dog/guinea pig then.
If they're so desperate for free food for their children paid for by their colleagues, why not just set up a crowdfunder for their 'starving' offspring?

dottydodah · 29/05/2025 14:39

TBH I think you were being a bit over zealous! Once or twice to be up for more OK 3 or 4 times a little bit much really.I also think with COL as it is, people with kids should come first .It's hard to feed a family these days.

Yes, but you need to have a better strategy for feeding your family than hoping there will be an over-catered work lunch.

NicolaCasanova · 29/05/2025 12:49

OP the only reason you could possibly be accused of greed is if you don’t contribute to the buffet in the first place or bring something cheap and horrible that is a much lesser contribution than everyone else’s.

Agree that the buffet is there to be eaten and the taking stuff home/kid thing is weird.

I wondered this. Maybe the people with children brought in nice things in big quantities and the poster brought a pack of cheap biscuits. Usually at a work buffet someone brings little and eats lots.

Starling7 · 29/05/2025 12:33

Take note of this in your diary, with the people involved and their exact quotes. My nightmare workplace bullying situation started off with a little gang making comments like this. Watch your back. Xx

Take this excellent advice @HamOnBeth

Mumofferal3 · 29/05/2025 14:58

Todaysworldandbiscuits · 29/05/2025 13:00

I'm not convinced by this tbh. Op, have you added the "kids" detail in to get people to agree with you? This seemed fabricated.
What was your contribution to the buffet? It also does sound like you were eating alot more than everybody else, for it to be so noticeable. There was a woman I used to work with that would bring in a cheap packet of biscuits that cost £1, if that, then eat loads. Meanwhile the rest of us supplied the rest, and not as well off as she was either. Some people put a lot of effort in, homemaking things, and bringing in a lot. I think it is understandable that when the buffet has finished, some may want to wrap the rest of a cake they've made ror example, and take that back. Husband might have said "Bring me a slice back, if there's any left over at the end."

If you're thinking there is loads of food left, is there really though? If there's say 20 staff and they all haven't back up yet, for instance. It sounds like you were eating a lot more than your share.

Edited

I think your response is a tarring lots with the same brush.

The OP openly says she went back as it was the end of the day. If people were precious about it then surely they would have had chance to go collect their slab of cake for hubby.

I personally hate waste and if I thought it was going in the bin, I would eat more than my average.

I don't think shaming people is the appropriate response. If I wanted to save something, I would bring a tub to take home a porrtion for my loved ones. But I wouldn't shame someone for taking extras. Poor OP.

BunnyLake · 29/05/2025 14:58

At buffets I never pile my plate, I just put one or two small items on at a time so I can easily go up five times.

BitOutOfPractice · 29/05/2025 14:54

I’ve not read the thread (but op yanbu) but please tell me I’m not too late for the “oh I’m stuffed after one cocktail sausage” brigade. Or the “I can’t believe you ate so much UPF brigade”?

SilviaSnuffleBum · 29/05/2025 14:54

God, how bloody rude of that person.
Even if I'd thought someone was being 'greedy', I wouldn't say so, as the connotations of that word are just horrid.

AdoraBell · 29/05/2025 14:53

YANBU OP, but I would have said - okay, I’ll leave it- and then put it back. I’m not saying you shouldn’t have taken it.

Lifeofryan · 29/05/2025 14:52

mondaytosunday · 29/05/2025 12:33

To be honest if I saw some one going back THREE times after the lunch I’d be thinking ‘Gosh how hungry can they be’? But I wouldn’t have said anything and see no reason why the food should then be reserved just for parents to take home.

This^ Also , at work, I'd never eat leftovers just to stop food from going to waste. I'm not the food bin. I think in workplaces , colleagues are always judging you, so even if I was hungry I wouldn't be going several times to get more food. You're just giving people something to bitch about. But I think those people who are taking food home for their children are equally greedy.

BunnyLake · 29/05/2025 14:52

I wouldn’t think twice about it because why would I care and I wouldn’t be counting how many times you went back. It’s not like you were taking a huge uncut cake back with you. Those sandwiches were probably going to start curling anyway.

I hate people making snidey little digs while smiling or laughing.

I have kids but I don’t see why parents should take precedence over non parents.

treesandsun · 29/05/2025 14:52

They sound very rude. Everyone should be consulted on a decision rather than you being informed later what has been decided. Even if you were stuffing your face with every single thing available it was for the work colleagues to begin with.

We used to do a similar thing at my old workplace and what was left over was offered to people to take home. If they wanted to. If people didn't want Anything themselves ,there was usually a suggestion perhaps we could take some for children /partners but this was usually things that were in a wrapper rather than having been out on the side for hours.

ClearFruit · 29/05/2025 14:51

I would not have gone up four times, especially not if nobody else was.

viques · 29/05/2025 14:51

How big were the sandwiches? If they were those dainty little triangles then fine, if they were NY deli doorstops then your colleagues have a point!

Catsandcannedbeans · 29/05/2025 14:48

I have kids and probably wouldn’t be feeding them curdled sandwiches that had been left out all day, but that’s just me.

I don’t concern myself with other people’s eating habits either, if you’re hungry go up 10 times for all I care. It doesn’t seem like you actually ate that much, you just went up several times. I would have definitely eaten more than you, but I’d have got it in two rounds, probably would have gone for a third out of spite if someone called me greedy.

Mumofferal3 · 29/05/2025 14:47

Projectme · 29/05/2025 12:34

You didn't hear that someone commented about leftovers being taken home for people's children so you weren't to know. If I was hungry, I'd have had a few more bits too.

If there was still loads left over after you had some more at 5pm, then there was still enough for those people to take bits home for their kids (ewww...yuk...the food was sat in an office environment for 4 hours at least and they actually WANTED to take it home?!)

"I said I hadn’t heard this so someone said “Well no, you won’t have” and rolled their eyes." This would have annoyed me enough to ask 'what's that supposed to mean?'

Absolutely this. I would have acted dumb and made their dumbass have to explain how rude they actually are.

For all they know, you might go home to very little food. Or could have previous issues with food.

I would absolutely log this somewhere in case any more snide comments are made.

I always go up for more than 1 plate at a buffet because let's face it buffet food just hits differently. Next time make sure you sachay your way there and back makibg it clear that you are not affected by mean girl comments.
