To think high heels (especially when worn casually) look absolutely ridiculous?

I’m probably going to get absolutely flamed for this.

But aibu to think that high heels are a complete monstrosity? The only time I think they are passable is if it’s something very formal. For example TV presenters sitting on a couch, or attending an award ceremony. As they’re really being worn just for show.

Tbh I don’t see many people wearing high heels these days, but sometimes I’ll notice a women teetering round the park or the shops, barely able to walk and looking very uncomfortable, I’ve even seen a woman bowling in high heels.

They look so uncomfortable and impractical.

I have always thought they look bizarre as objects.

The big spike sticking off the back.

Just odd.

And working at odds with the whole function of a shoe: uncomfortable, impractical, slow mobility down rather than enabling it, damaging our feet not protecting them.

I’m 40 so I don’t think I’m classed as the young.

The reason they are hideous is because they are totally impractical and no one can walk properly in them.

Anyone who claims that they are 100% comfortable and can walk comfortably in high heels is kidding themselves.

I am quite comfortable walking for hours in heels. They improve my posture and my back hurts less.

JohnTheRevelator · 29/05/2025 00:08

Omg I am SO over high heels. It's flats all the way for me now. I cringe when I see a woman wearing ridiculously high heels that she's obviously struggling to walk in properly.

Lolalovesroses · 28/05/2025 23:51

According to Vogue high heels are making a come back this year!
“2025 is shaping up to be the year of the stiletto’s structural sister: the flared heel. She’s a little bit ’70s and a little bit Art-Deco – equal parts retro glam and futuristic chic. Because, hey! We really can have it all. Distinguished by unexpected proportions and subtle scoops, these playful styles are popping up on both runways and red carpet.”

Crocs are vile
High heels generally look ridiculous and around here it's a dated look. Very few young people wear them. Hopefully they will go out of style completely like corsets and other things that are uncomfortable and cause pain to women only.

You must not go 'out out' much because young people never stopped wearing heels. Neither did old people who still can. Sadly I can't anymore, but I still admire them from afar. Also, do you never look at a magazine or high fashion shops, heels are not dated, the style of the heel might change but they will never date. Agree with PP that fashion changes so we buy things, jeans are a good example! Everyone should just wear what they want, and there's really no need to criticise people for it. Although I will have to agree with you about crocs, I see something wrong when I see 3 generations of a family, both male and female all wearing the same shoes 😵

Totallymessed · 28/05/2025 23:38

Things do go in and out of fashion, but as PP on the thread have pointed out, some things go out and don't return. Heels are physically limiting, often uncomfortable, and can cause long term problems with your feet. So I hope they go the way of corsets and foot binding.

You are allowed to say cunt here.

I'm aware.
But not in that context

Saltedtoffee · 28/05/2025 23:27

I think you just get used to fashion and heels are dated now.I remember years back wearing Doc Martens with a dress and my Mum saying how ridiculous it looked.Heels will undoubtedly make a return. I struggle with what to wear with a dress for a wedding for example as I wouldn't wear trainers and my physique doesn't lend well to kitten heels.

Well aren't you quite the judgemental, to use your word, "prat"
I'd use my word. But my word in that sentence might get me a slap on the wrist.
Begins with a C tho
Use your imagination

I used to wear them at work, as everyone did. I think they can look nice. I don’t wear them any more.

Hapagirl48 · 28/05/2025 23:12

I've worn heels since I was 16ish. I'm 50 now. I'm also 5 foot without them. Each to their own.

notomato · 28/05/2025 23:12

There's a mum at my son's school who wears smart clothes for work and high heels but she can't walk in them at all, does this weird striding thing in them. I have to walk a different way if I encounter her as I can't stop myself laughing, it's like the Ministry of Silly Walks 😂

BIossomtoes · 28/05/2025 22:52

It’s not a look I particularly like, it’s a bit fussy for my taste. I’ve seen her look a lot better.

I presume though despite the outfit not being to your taste you don’t think she looks old, ridiculous, desperate or is an Andrew Tate sympathiser because she is wearing a pair of heels.

LSTMS30555 · 28/05/2025 22:53

Heels can look great with the right outfit no matter where you are. Also wearing them correctly (comfortable width/size) should make them no different to any other footwear to walk in.
They’ve never hurt my feet nor have I ever had to take them off before I get home.

Kellywiththelegs · 28/05/2025 22:51

I notice the vociferous heel haters on here haven’t commented on my Pamela Anderson post, is she desperate, dated, ridiculous, looks old? Crickets.

What’s the betting this turns into one? You’ll have to wrest my red lipstick from my cold, dead hands!

Love a red lip! 👄

I was just thinking we haven’t had a “women who wear make up are deeply insecure” thread for a while!

I tend to agree with this. It’s a bit like the, ‘I can’t understand why women wear makeup, it’s so misogynistic’ brigade.

They seem to have extremely strong, angry feelings about what other women are wearing, and feel the need to ridicule or make derogatory comments.

I tend to think they are people who either don’t want to wear, or don’t look good, in a particular item themselves, so they don’t want other women to wear it either! It’s all a bit bizarre.

I personally don’t want to wear heels anymore, but I don’t care if other women do!

I think crocs are absolutely grim, I just hate them. But I don’t have to wear them so whatever, if someone else is comfortable in ugly impractical shoes then good for them

TanquerayTickles · 28/05/2025 22:42

A very fashion forward designer friend of mine informed me earlier, after mentioning this thread to her, that not only are stilettos on their way back, they’re going to be white! Double jeopardy 😅

Kellywiththelegs · 28/05/2025 22:40

Coolasfeck · 28/05/2025 22:25

I think you’ve nailed it. There’s a lot of ‘coping’ on this thread.

I think there is a lot of group self soothing as well.

Astrabees · 28/05/2025 22:40

I used to wear very high heels for work and they just felt normal, I could run for a bus wearing them. They made me feel very confident and attractive. I have no occasion to wear them now but I still have a few pairs and wear them from time to time at home just to keep in practice.

I have to say I don’t understand this notion that women having opinions is equated to tearing each other down or something unbecoming.Aflawed behaviour
Why is women actively defending their pov tearing each other down? It is permissible for women to disagree, be strident and engage in argument
Equating women have opinions that they vigorously defend as tearing each other down is really another version of the Be nice!Speak nice trope. We don’t want women getting too opinionated.

Edited

There are ways to “actively defending their pov” ( can’t believe you actually wrote that about shoes of all things) It’s the language used on this thread, desperate, try hard, ridiculous, Andrew Tate, Benny Hill, I could go on and yes it is tearing other women down by sneering at them in a derogatory manner. I’m sure you wouldn’t like it if I said I think women who wear flat shoes look like they have clown feet, walk like a duck and look utterly ridiculous would you? Oh and the best one, your flats really age you! Have your opinions by all means but do it without the nasty comments.
