How would you split the holiday costs

How would you split costs for this holiday.
Large holiday home split between three families.
Family 1
2 adults, 3 kids aged 11 15 and 17 will take 3 bedrooms

Family 2
2 adults, 2 kids aged 8 and 14 will take 2 bedrooms

Family 3
2 adults, 2 kids aged 5 and 9 will take 2 bedrooms

How would you split both the house rental cost and the big food shop cost?

I need a holiday reading this thread. Next time, travel with your own family and spend your own money on yourselves! Sorted!

Ellmau · 30/05/2025 07:43

Rental by room, food by person. I don't think I could be bothered calculating age/amount of food and drink likely to be consumed.

Cornishclio · 30/05/2025 07:41

Family 1 should pay more. Families 2 and 3 more or less the same. Each family pays for themselves if eating out. 3/7 for family 1 and 2/7 for families 2 and 3. Food should probably be split more to reflect the fact family 1 has older teenagers so they should pay 50% of food bill and the other 2 families 25% each.

Probably I'd divide by 7 - the number of rooms being used. Family one pay 3/7th of the cost and the other two families both pay 2/7th.

Seems fairest.

We go away with in laws sometimes with a similar set up.

We split cost according to room - it is no more complicated a calculation than just splitting the ways, you can use a calculator, it’s not like you’re being asked to work it out on an abacus!

For the food, we find everyone has such different dietary and cost requirements and foods they just can’t do without for a week it’s actually a nightmare coordinating it into one order.

So each family just brings/gets delivered their own contribution towards breakfast and lunches, which everyone shares with everyone else, and undertakes to cook one or two meals each, which they again bring the ingredients for.

It works really well - everyone gets the food they enjoy, no quibbling over who paid for what, everyone tends to buy a bit more generously so there is loads of food and drink, everyone can shop within their own budget, and nobody feels secretly resentful because they had to do all the online shopping/ are subsidising lots of expensive protein yoghurts that nobody in their family eats/ they are having to put up with strawberry jam because nobody else likes blackcurrant/ the tea bags are the wrong brand.

3:2:2 house
food presume it’s 7 nights so larger family caters 3 nights other family caters 2 each.

SunnySideDeepDown · 30/05/2025 07:37

I’d split 3 ways. I’m not tight with close family and friends.

tamade · 30/05/2025 07:36

I would split the accommodation in 7ths according to the number of rooms occupied

Food? I would split it equally in thirds. That is what I experienced growing up, the eating together aspect is more of a shared experience or something. But I know people are poorer/tighter/meaner these days - at least from what I read on here

minnienono · 30/05/2025 07:34

Rental by 3 assuming the kid with the single room gets the smallest. Food is trickier, I’d split by person but count the 3rd family as 3 not 4.

CautiousLurker01 · 30/05/2025 07:29

Accommodation costs would be 3-2-2; and food would be 5-4-4

alcohol probably between 3 unless 17yo sharing

lightslittle · 30/05/2025 07:21

We would just divide by 3 for the number of families

TheFunHare · 30/05/2025 07:17

If it was me using the extra room I would 100% offer to pay more but I'd be a bit miffed if it was deemed fair to pay 3/7 of the total cost. 5/13 would probably be fair. Again food wise I'd expect to pay more but would probably suggest i bought more snacks as that's where teenagers will eat more. One more portion of spag bol isn't exactly going to break the bank. We have a similar set up with friends and I do get a bit annoyed that the bigger family never recognise or talk about the fact that we have to pay extra for a bigger house that they don't then contribute extra too. I wouldn't even mind splitting 3 ways but it's the fact they never mention it which winds me up a bit. But they are great in other ways so you have to move on because I don't think they are doing it to be tight.

I think I had missed the red flags...I made allowances for occasions where they were short of money or forgotten their bank card..(so they said).

Goodness.. this was family and they’d pulled the wool over your eyes all your life until this holiday!

needless to say… avoid going again!

Bogeyes · 30/05/2025 07:10

Biropens · 30/05/2025 07:03

And prior to holiday…
no hint that they were like this?

Things like...we bought nice bread...they bought cheap bread. We had the odd drink...they drank like fish. I am waiting for comments from victims of these greedy users....

Well sounds ghastly
so why arrange to go on holiday with them?

Unbelievably they were my own family. Bitching and bickering from start to finish.

These were presumably very close friends for you to have chosen to holiday with them?

Icebreakhell · 30/05/2025 07:01

Accommodation 3: 2: 2

Food is trickier. For meals out everyone gets a separate tab is probably easiest.
Maybe everyone buys their own snacks and drinks but the basic food shop is divided by 3. Teens eat a lot but small children also eat a load of stuff others don’t want- yoghurts, raisins etc.

Riaanna · 30/05/2025 06:46

stank · 28/05/2025 16:03

Accomodation by the room (3:2:2) food divide by 3

You would divide food by 3 even though family 1 is going to eat significantly more than family 3?

Biropens · 30/05/2025 06:40

Bogeyes · 30/05/2025 06:34

Been there...done that. The groups I went with ate and drank like pigs as they knew others were sharing the cost...beware! Never again!

heavenisaplaceonearth · 30/05/2025 06:37

Divide by the number of people then multiple by 5 or 4 depending on the family.

WaltzingWaters · 30/05/2025 06:33

Did the first family insist on needing 2 rooms for their children which meant you needed to find a bigger more expensive place? Or is there just an extra room available and makes sense they use it? That would influence whether splitting between number of rooms or just thirds.

With food split by number of people. Their kids are older and will presumably eat a fair bit more, as well as having an extra teen to feed. So either they just put an extra lump into the food kitty or you work it all out exactly, I guess depends on how hard up you all are.

For meals out work out roughly what each family has had.

Viviennemary · 30/05/2025 06:31

Rent a third each. Family with older children could contribute more. I just wouldn't enter into this type of arrangement.
