Settle a serious argument between DH and I…

A sharp or even mild cheddar does not belong on top of an authentic Lasagna..

DH is calling me fussy and that I’m turning into my bat shit mother who will only eat straight chips because I am protesting that the flavours don’t go.

It’s doesn’t even melt the same FFS.

Ughhh I’m with you OP - only mozzarella!!

LaughingCat · 27/05/2025 19:45

What is wrong with people, @PinkponyclubOG? I’m 100% with you. Mozzarella and parmesan only, pecorino if I fancy a bit of sharpness.

Cheddar has NO place on any self-respecting lasagna!

My DH is with your DH unfortunately…

TatteredAndTorn · 27/05/2025 19:40

I’m with your mother. I don’t like crinkle cut chips either.

VivIsBlonde · 27/05/2025 19:37

I can’t stand cheese, nor pasta nor a tomato sauce, so 🤣🤣 no good asking me

It doesn't matter grammatically where I, I mean me, sits in the sentence. What matters is whether I'm the subject or the object. I am the object in this case; the argument is being had, and the objects it is having itself on are me and my DH.

You can always check by eliminating the other party. "He's having an argument with I" - obviously wrong. "He's having an argument with me" - correct.

100% agree on the usage of 'I' or 'me', but was always taught that the other person should be mentioned first. Either way, we're right 😂😂

TroysMammy · 27/05/2025 19:35

I've got an Italian language pasta recipe book and none of the ingredients in the lasagne section translate to English Cheddar cheese. The cheeses mentioned are ricotta di pecora, mozzarella di bufala and parmigiano grattugiato. So for authenticity OP is correct.

UnctuousUnicorns · 27/05/2025 19:34

Remember, English politeness/self effacingness (is that a word?)
dictates that the writer lists themself last in a couple or group. So, DH/DW and I are etc. Or he spoke to DB, DF and me. Most people don't bother now, but strictly speaking it's correct.

SharpLily · 27/05/2025 19:31
  1. DH and me, in this particular instance.
  2. No, cheddar is not appropriate or authentic but it's so, so goooooood. Your DH is right to use it. Not mild though, obvs.

Who cares about "authentic"? Melted cheddar tastes delicious on lasagna and other tomato-based pasta dishes. Unless your nonna is going to spank you with her wooden spoon or you're entering a Tuscan cooking competition, why not?

And it's "me and DH", if you're going to be particular.

Proper grammar is “DH and me,” if you’re going to correct someone.

ThePerkyEagle · 27/05/2025 19:30

Cheese is cheese at the end of the day, and if someone else has cooked it I’d care even less what cheese was used on top!

It's defo DH and I or me and my DH

You jest. 😅

It's actually DH and me

WhereIsMyJumper · 27/05/2025 19:25

I’m equal opportunities when it comes to cheese. I love them all.

What I would say is that if this is a ‘serious’ argument between you, then you must have a lovely marriage

outerspacepotato · 27/05/2025 19:25

Ricotta and pecorino.

But DH cooks every night, if I was not to give him direction how would he know my preferences?!

Mine doesn’t cook every night which is why I would enjoy the break from it.
Of course you can tell the cook your preference but I don’t think you should be giving him directions or over looking the cooking

there is no such thing as the wrong cheese. Cheese is always right.

This. Cheese would enhance cornflakes.

It's defo DH and I or me and my DH

It is not. The two phrases serve different grammatical purposes and are not interchangeable.

‘DH and I are going to cook lasagne tonight’ - ‘DH and I’ is the subject of the verb and therefore a subjective pronoun is used.
‘Settle an argument between DH and me’ - the phrase is the object of the preposition ‘between’ and therefore needs the objective pronoun ‘me’.

Willwetalk · 27/05/2025 19:15

DH and me, surely? Definitely 'me' in this instance, though.

If my DH was cooking for me I’d leave him to it and be grateful for the break from cooking lol

I’m definitely not American, Ironically I live very near Cheddar Gorge, however I didn’t realise describing a strong Cheddar as sharp was such no-no!

DH is cooking under my watchful eye as of yet no cheddar has made a disappearance!

stayathomer · 27/05/2025 19:16

lasagne never tastes better out than it does when you cook it at home and I think this is why- imo you can’t beat cheddar on a lasagne (runs and hides!)

kalokagathos · 27/05/2025 19:16

We love strong in-your-face cheeses so add strong cheddar and Parmesan. Delicious 😋 Team Husband here
