Family watching gym class

FlowersandElephants · 25/05/2025 22:24

I am fully willing to accept that IABU here.

I am a regular at the gym, Sunday mornings I do 2 classes. The first one is circuit training, there are usually 8-10 people.
For the last few weeks a new woman has been coming. The problem is, her husband/partner either stands at the door (holding it open) with their 2 kids (2 and 3 years old I would guess) or comes in and sits on the windowsill where we all put our stuff.

It just makes me uncomfortable but I don’t even know why! I don’t think a gym class is a place for children, for me, the gym is adult time.

The gym needs to sort this out, children and non participants shouldn’t be randomly in classes. They’re just essentially in the way.

butteredhorseradish · 26/05/2025 09:36

I would complain to staff about it. They shouldn't be there watching the class. There are plenty of other things they could be doing while the mother is at the class.

Totallytoti · 26/05/2025 07:15

Oh please. 🙄 not every woman is being abused by the big bad man.

some people are like this, do everything together. Maybe the kids were being a pita and wanted to come to watch. I would absolutely complain about this and make sure they aren’t allowed next time.

Stop making excuses for dodgy men. You know perfectly well that there’s a very high chance of him being abusive or you’re in complete denial. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Flossflower · 26/05/2025 09:14

I would tell him that the door should be closed. You don’t want to be watched.

mepipesneedlagging · 26/05/2025 09:02

The fact he's holding the door open would irritate me, let alone anything else 🤨
Lots of things irritated me when I did gym classes though. Now I just do my own thing 😂

InterruptingRabbit · 26/05/2025 08:55

They shouldn’t come in and watch - it’s weird and disruptive.

I wouldn’t assume that there’s an issue in their relationship. Maybe she can’t drive so gets a lift, maybe they go from the class straight to another weekly thing they do and there’s no time for her to go home in between, maybe he does a class after that she watches the kids during, maybe they stay with family Saturday night and go to the class on the way back as there’s no time to go home first.
None of that makes it reasonable for them to sit in the room though. I’m surprised it’s allowed.

In my gym there is a turnstile at the reception which leads to the changing rooms, spa, pool, gym hall and studios and you can only operate it with a wristband which members have or spa/ day guests are given. Reception shouldn’t be letting this guy through the turnstiles.

We have a QR code on the app so I think he’s probably a member too, and the children could be for swimming. There is a cafe and a play area for children. I’m definitely going to mention it if he does it next Sunday!

You are right, its odd and uncomfortable. Complain to the teacher

Renabrook · 26/05/2025 07:47

So does this mean if a man is with a woman everywhere she is being abused and he is only there to control her? sure seems odd to me but why do people on here always jump to every single woman is being abused if is in the vicinity of her partner

that to me is weirder

I think it depends on the time and place.

Gym class is definitely not on for an grown adult to sit & watch. It's different for older DC who can sit and quietly entertain themselves
Every gym has an foyer often a little café. That's the appropriate place to sit and wait.

Jellicoe · 26/05/2025 08:21

It isn’t the children that would bother me. Why would a grown man be allowed to sit and watch people (let’s assume mostly wonen) in work out clothes doing exercise. Sounds pervy to me. I would def complain

IwantmyReptv · 26/05/2025 08:20

The husband watching is weird. Why can't he take the kids for a walk to the park?

Kids alone sitting nicely with an ipad would be fine. Mine had to do it when they were younger.

You don’t find it remotely odd that this man comes to watch his partner every single week? Why can’t he and the kids wait for her in the cafe?

ResidentPorker · 26/05/2025 08:16

Either he's so incompetent that he can't look after the kids by himself for an hour, or he won't let her out of his sight. Neither is good.

InMyOpenOnion · 26/05/2025 07:52

I would hate to have spectators whilst exercising, it's totally inappropriate. There is absolutely no need for him to be there with the kids - if he's killing time while his wife exercises, he should bring some toys and books and sit elsewhere.

Lostworlds · 26/05/2025 07:46

I think the gym instructor probably feels a bit too u uncomfortable to ask them to leave but in my gym when we are doing classes, the door is closed and if anyone is blocking it then they are asked to move.

TubeScreamer · 26/05/2025 07:44

I wouldn’t like this at all. I would speak to the gym staff before next Sunday,

Enthusiasticcarrotgrower · 26/05/2025 07:30

That’s so weird. They shouldn’t be allowed.

SinicalMe · 26/05/2025 07:24

This wouldn’t be allowed at my gym. Why on earth your instructor has allowed him to stay is mind boggling. For insurance purposes he shouldn’t be in there.
