Does anyone live on a road like this, do they still exist?

Where kids run in and out of each others houses and ride bikes on the street together?

Is this still a thing? I’d like to move to a road like this for my 6 year old. We currently have this, but not in the uk, does it still exist there?

I live in a tiny hamlet three miles from the nearest shop, and it's like this here (and was when my children were growing up). They roam the entire village and all the local footpaths and bridleways and build dens. It's very Enid Blyton. It's just a bloody pain if you run out of milk.

Definitely available as others have said but the trick is trying to find an estate/street that has a similar profile of ages and with a cul de sac or green area to play in. If it’s a new build estate pitched at younger first-time buyers, then more likely that many of them will have small children of similar ages for the next ten or more years. But if the estate is 20-25 years old you may find it harder unless there’s a lot of turnover of owners. They go through cycles.

Literally haven’t seen this since the 80’s

You have described where I live, but we are very lucky. It’s a tiny estate - 2 roads into the estate, with a long row of houses on a wide walkway.

My DS is now 19, but when he was between 5 and 12 years old, every other house had children between those ages. The walkway was always full of bikes, scooters and footballs. Our basket ball net was at the bottom of our garden, on the walkway, so any of the kids could use it. I had swings/slide/climbing frame in my back garden, so there were always kids in and out. It was a fantastic place for children.

However, we live in a deprived Town in the NW of England and outside of our little ‘bubble’ it’s pretty rough.

I still live here and there’s not so many young kids now. They are all teenagers and we don’t see much of them.

LostGhost · 25/05/2025 20:04

This is where we live! The kids are constantly out and playing with each other rain or shine. We're in Cambridgeshire

UsernameShmusername2024 · 25/05/2025 19:58

Yep, happens in my town in some of the streets but unfortunately not ours as it's quite a busy road, would love my kids to be able to play out like we did. My town has alleyways between the rows of terraces and we spent our childhoods in the alleys, I'd look for this or a cul-de-sac.

SlugsWon · 25/05/2025 19:56

Yup, small village in North Wales. Not an estate or cul du sac, it's a steep mountain road but the kids make it work!!

I would look for houses in proximity to a primary school, which are affordable for young families

FortyFacedFuckers · 25/05/2025 19:55

I am in the central belt of Scotland and it’s definitely like that where I live.

WhereIsMyJumper · 25/05/2025 19:47

We have it!
Actually, me and DS’ dad are divorced but live in the same town. DS is with each of us 50/50 and we both have this to some degree

Onethingafteran0ther · 25/05/2025 19:38

Another vote for living in a village near a good school. We LOVE it. It feels so safe for our children to play out. Village in home counties x

Stinkbomb · 25/05/2025 19:31

Yes in our small area they do.

FalseSpring · 25/05/2025 19:17

Yes, in a small village in Scotland.

Hellodarknessmyoldfrien · 25/05/2025 18:31

Yep! Another cul de sac, town near London

screwyou · 25/05/2025 18:31

Yes and they were having a street party yesterday. The kids play out, not feral just nicely. They chalk the street and cycle up and down it is a dead road of victorian houses in a market town which has a really lovely atmosphere to it.

ChangeUserName25 · 25/05/2025 18:30

No , not many kids on our road except ndn. They come to play maybe every 2 weeks. This road is quite busy traffic wise too

As a kid I was always out in the street playing , lots of kids, quiet road for traffic.

TrolleySong · 25/05/2025 18:28

I think the issue is trying to move to somewhere with a generation of children the right age for your child — all the safe cul de sacs in the world aren’t going to provide this if your children are the wrong age for the others living around.

A good friend of mine (now 50) grew up on a road in a new estate where all the parents were the same age ish and buying their first houses, and he, and four immediate neighbours were literally born within about ten days of one another. He claims there was some dinner Dan e all the parents attended and clearly went home and made babies. Throughout his entire childhood they moved around in a solid cohort.

FuckityFux · 25/05/2025 18:27

Yes, my friend lives on a small estate in a little town in the west of Ireland. Everyone knows everyone and the little kids run between houses and play on the small green.

Lovemycat2023 · 25/05/2025 18:23

Yeah, I live in a suburb of a big town and we seem to have this. However our road is known for having a good community feel, so it might be quite specific to us and not the wider area.

Middlechild3 · 25/05/2025 18:15

For the first time in years there are a few assorted families kids whizzing up and down on their bikes, the odd game of road tennis, having water fights and fun in my road, it's lovely. Sadly there are some kids who don't seem allowed out or to mix, one in particular constantly knocks the window to try and connect with these kids which is sad.

Boredboredboreder · 25/05/2025 14:58

😅 Where are you?

You do not want to live where I am OP, please trust me on that one.

RaraRachael · 25/05/2025 17:51

Still the case in NE Scotland. A group of kids will go to the park together and walk to and from school from age 5.

Willyoujustbequiet · 25/05/2025 17:50

I do.

Very common in the north east.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 25/05/2025 17:50

Yes, a village in east Lancashire. We live on a cul de sac where everyone knows everybody else by name and all the kids play together. It's lovely.
