Angela Rayner set up to fail

billysboy · 25/05/2025 06:39

I can help think that Angela Rayner has been set up to fail on her housing targets
having promised to build ( not convert old offices ) 1.5m new homes by the end of her term the government seems woefully behind
for the next 4 years 370k homes will need to be built each year to achieve this as currently 225 k new homes last year

I can’t help think that she is doomed to fail without massive planning reforms and a huge social housing building programme

@skymagentatwo I second that you don't know what mealy mouthed means.
I think certain newspapers deliberately choose really bad photos of her. When I've seen her on the television, she looks very different. Of course she's judged differently because of her sex. However I was disappointed in her using 'scum', even if it is factual. I agree that she needs to grow as a politician and learn to play the game. Without adult, non emotional conversations about immigration, we aren't going to solve the housing crisis, without paving over our whole country. Not taking Granny in and divorces are a drop in the Ocean. Granny and in particular Grandad, aren't dying at 55+ anymore.

Why is 'scum' factual?

No one would build atthe rate needed

developers are sitting in lane. Deliberately building out slowly to keep prices up nIf they built at the rate required house prices would drop

and no one is prepared to chivvy up development because of that

Sigh.
Imagine if we had a properly socialist government.
One that would set up a house-building department, compulsorily purchase land, poach employees (and contractors) from the current big companies by offering higher pay, 25 days holiday and great pensions, and lots of apprenticeships.

Then we could get the houses built.

Imagine if the government then retained the houses for social rent, instead of selling them all.

It will never happen, but wouldn't it be great?

Rayner's description of the Tories as 'scum' was her downfall. I can say that, you can say that but politicians should be above name calling. She gave herself away as not having the level of emotional intelligence to be a true politician. In a time where several politicians have been physically attacked or murdered, the way she spoke was, at best, unsophisticated and, at worst, dangerous and inciting hatred. It's nothing to do with class or misogyny, it's simply because she is not fit to hold a position in office. I'm astounded that Starmer appointed her, she's an embarrassment to the party.

Ever heard of Nye Bevan?

Agree with this. She gives us northern women a bad name.

@skymagentatwoYour post is horrible. But because I’m feeling kind, you need to know that “mealy mouthed” does not mean what you appear to think it means.

TeenagersAngst · 25/05/2025 09:44

She’s a modern day John Prescott. As much as I don’t care for either of them, I definitely think AR gets a harder time for her background than he ever did because she’s a woman.

Every housing minister has failed at meeting their house building targets, so I doubt it will do her much long term damage.

Theres far too much reliance on the big home builders, who aren’t really incentivised to build too many homes. Plus the process of buying land, planning, building… can take years in itself!

TBH as long as we are growing the population by 500k-1m people a year, even these targets are woefully low. Maybe we should be addressing that challenge too, as it’s part of this story.

Yes I don’t understand why we rely on major house builders when it’s not in their interest for prices to level off or fall (ie if supply goes up).

I am a centre left voter - sorry I wouldn’t vote for her in a million years - it’s all very well saying it’s a classist mysoginistic thing , but it isn’t - I don’t give a shit she’s a woman , I have and would have voted for Yvette cooper in the past and still like her , I’ve liked plenty of Labour women and have met some I would have given top jobs too - I sImply don’t like Angela Rayners style - I’ve never once heard her make a totally great speech and she sounds thick - never once heard her say anything that deep ( and no it’s not just her accent) - I wouldn’t vote for a bloke as PM like that , so why would I vote for her just because she’s a woman. In fact I think she’s been massively over promoted as it is to keep the corbynite left of the party happy .

Tell me,@Crikeyalmighty what is it about the Balliol educated Yvette Cooper that makes you prefer her to Angela Rayner?

She's as rough as they come. Absolutely vile

What makes you say this? In what way is she 'vile'? That's a strong word to use.

There are things we aren’t talking about with the housing shortage.

One of them is the demise of multi generational housing. Granny no longer moves in with one of the dc when she’s older.

The other is divorce. Many families have two houses big enough for the DC but only fully occupied part time. So what was one family now spread across two homes.

I’m not saying that the above should/shouldn’t happen, just highlighting that it does and impacts the number of homes we need to build.

Totally agree . This is never mentioned. I live in a 3 bed house with one dc.Eventually they will move out and I will be here alone. I bought the house off a lady who lived here with her late husband, 3 dc and at one point an elderly aunt!
My divorced parents both live in 3 bed houses alone. So do many older relatives and neighbours .
I accept that my own situation means I’m part of the problem but we all live very differently to our parents generation. Sorry derail🙈

I love Angela Raynor.

Livelovebehappy · 25/05/2025 09:04

She's very much cut from the same cloth as her chum Corbyn. And look how much support he had from the public when he stood against Boris. She's old Labour and as far to the left as you can go. She's lucky she holds a position of power within the party, because she's so out of her depth, it's embarrassing. I don't think her thinking aligns with Starmer at all, but of course she has to plod along with it.

CarefulN0w · 25/05/2025 09:02

TimeForTeaAndToast · 25/05/2025 08:21

Starmer can't get rid of her, because she was voted for by Labour members.

When he tried to take some responsibilities away from her while in opposition she came out of the meeting with more titles.

I'm sure they'd love for her to go.

I don't agree with her politically, but I thought she was good when she stood in for Starmer at PM questions while in opposition.

I think this is the heart of it. She’s not exactly been set up to fail, but they are trying to keep her busy because they know she has a lot of support. And I agree she is a good stand in on DPMQ. (Would love to see her against Kemi instead of Oliver D).

Pat McFadden knows that Ang’s proposed workers reforms are problematic for the economy and is probably working on pushing them into the long grass.

In reality, the targets aren't that much higher then what the Tories were building. I suggests she shuts up and gets the job done. No excuses.

Boredlass · 25/05/2025 08:47

Can’t stand her so hope she does. How she has got as high up as she has is dumbfounding. Nasty woman. Yes, I have met her before…

Fairyliz · 25/05/2025 08:46

What the old joke, ‘how do you know when a politician is lying?’
They are talking.
All politicians make ridiculous promises none of which are ever carried through. Perhaps we should report them to trading standards.

ExpressCheckout · 25/05/2025 08:44

Thing is, I want to like her because she has worked her way up in a sharp-elbowed, London-based, middle-class dominated 'profession'. She might not be an academic, but nor is she shallow and vacuous.

I'm also a Northerner from a nearby area. TBH, I think the dislike of her is more related to her social class, accent, etc. than her gender. I've heard middle-class women say some truly nasty things about her.

But, here's the rub - she's not yet convinced me that she's simply not just another everyday gobshite (I know quite a few) and I also think she'd sell your mother to the unions. That's my problem with her.

She just needs to grow up a little politically and align herself more with the people, not the unions (who are not interested in anyone but themselves). Be a bit more 'Prescott', I think that's what I'm saying.
