Petty neighbour

So I’ve been living in my flat with my family for just over 3 years now, everyone has been lovely never had an issue with anyone, we have 1 allocated parking space for each flat and the parking is really tight, I always be careful to not hit anyone’s car door with my door but sometimes I have to lean my door on there’s to get in and out as I won’t fit otherwise and I think it’s gotten harder now as I’m 37 weeks pregnant!
so in my post box today I found a handwritten note from the neighbour who parks next to me and she’s said she’s noticed some paint marks of my car on her car and if we could call her to look into it together 😐 its just transferred paint and will come off even if you lick your finger I’m so shocked she’s actually said something like this as she knows I’m pregnant and we’re also moving out in 2 days!
Do I act like I’ve never seen the note and just leave or do I actually call her I’m literally waddling around in so much pain moving house and heavily pregnant I thought she’d be more considerate

You're moving out in 2 days and just recently spent a ton of money on renovations? Something doesn't ring true here....

Obviously the bath, radiators etc are for the newly renovated house that she's moving to.

It's hardly rocket science 🙄

HappiestSleeping · 24/05/2025 22:01

Paint doesn't "just transfer". Cars have layers of paint, and then layers of lacquer, so if paint has "just transferred" it was a pretty hefty rub.

Just stop and think about what you're saying OP. You say "It's just transferred paint", but for paint to be transferred to car A, it must have left car B. So at least one of the two cars has less paint than it did before. You can't just assume that it's only your car which has lost paint in these little incidents. It's quite possible (indeed probable) that paint has transferred from her car to your car too. And if that's the case, then this is damage, and she's not unreasonable to be irked by it.

Sure you are struggling, and it does sound hard, but your position seems to be that:

(1) because of your own struggles, other people who have no personal connection to you should overlook things you do, and.
(2) because you are more laissez-faire about looking after your own property, anyone who is more careful / concerned than you are is being precious and difficult.

Sorry OP but those two things are red flags for you being a cheeky f**ker (CF).

EmeraldShamrock000 · 25/05/2025 08:31

Acknowledge the note, don't be a dick.
Fgs my children are aware that they cause damage to someone else's property. They must pay for the damage.
Don't be sly.

jackstini · 25/05/2025 08:28

Glad it came off, but yes you should still call and apologise and let her know it’s sorted

Re all these issues:
”Ive had my brand new stone bath damaged and scratched my brand new brass radiator scratched from top to bottom, my new door frames bashed, my flooring completely ruined after paying so so much for it as well and I’ve said nothing! Because some of them was an accident and accidents happen I don’t go around asking people to go pay for it I know a lot of people would and I probably should’ve”

Yes you absolutely need to say something about all of these things!!
Even if some were accidents, the companies will be insured and should sort them out. Stop being a pushover

If these items are in your new house, you are going to be pissed off every time you notice them

If they are in your current house you need to get them sorted before the new buyers move in and complain!

People have different standards - what’s a small insignificant scratch for 1 person is a dealbreaker for another

Accept that, sort out the issues and move on - you will have plenty to focus on in a few weeks! 👶

@CanelliniBeansBut it wasn’t really damaged was it ? @KaTobyI’m sorry but there is nowhere else nearby to park where I live outside the car park is a double yellow line I depend on my parking space plus who am I going to randomly find to park my car for me seriously??! And no there is no way I’m fitting through a tiny gap with my huge tummy! Trust me I don’t want to damage my car either not to sound like a snob I don’t drive a cheap car it’s the tiniest bit of paint she needs to chill we’ve always been so kind to her always helped her whenever it was needed that’s why I’m shocked she come out with a note like this

You've not answered the question. If it comes off with a wet wipe, why didn't you wipe it off? Then, according to you, there would have been nothing to see, and no note. You're coming across as a bit of an idiot here.

kalokagathos · 25/05/2025 08:10

I’d be furious too. I would not accept any marks on my car from someone else’s car. The cheek 😱

SoScarletItWas · 25/05/2025 08:01

Pippa12 · 25/05/2025 06:02

That is because your car is 15 years old and full of scratch marks and you don’t give a shiny shit about it because you don’t think it matters! 😂

I don’t think you’ve come across well on this thread OP. You’ve obviously got a lot going on.

TBH you have made a mountain out of a mole hill. She only asked to meet with you to discuss the matter. You could have met with her armed with your baby wipes and wiped the marks off- job done! No need to sour relations.

FWIW I understand you need to lean on the car next to you, I’ve done it myself when pregnant. I use my hand between the cars at the widest bit between the doors where they touch to ensure there isn’t any damage- however irrelevant (to you) that maybe.

Good luck with your house move, I’ve renovated- it’s tough! You need to come down harder on your contractors, they are taking the piss causing all that damage for which they will be insured for. I’ve no idea why you aren’t addressing their carelessness and excusing it for accident.

I’ve no idea why she went to all that expense for a rented flat that she’s moving out of, but here we are 🤔

Absolute mountain out of molehill, anyway. As soon as you read the note, pop round with your trusty wet wipes, apologising as you rub off the paint. Oh and yes £100 for the wardrobe will be great, thanks Sandra. Job done.

ShillyShallySherbet · 25/05/2025 07:55

ReadingSoManyThreads · 24/05/2025 22:15

I'd just go out and wipe the paint off. Job done.

Absolutely do this, then call her and tell her you’ve had a look and it’s sorted.

FloydWasACat · 25/05/2025 07:51

Ugh, massive typos!

FloydWasACat · 25/05/2025 07:50

Sorry OP but you are being a bit of a that. You posted in AIBU but you are over---defensive. Don't post if you don't like the responses.

Also, I would be massively pissed off if my card got marked. As someone else said you aren't the first person to be pregnant and if it was so easy to remove the stain why didn't you do it the first place?

Shmee1988 · 25/05/2025 07:50

KaToby · 24/05/2025 22:17

I’m genuinely shocked that people can be this selfish and believe the neighbour is in the wrong!

Have you read any of the replies? I haven't seen a single one as yes that suggests the neighbour is selfish or in the wrong?

EleanorReally · 25/05/2025 07:49

being pregnant isnt a get out of jail free card
speak to the neighbour

Woodywoodpecker321 · 25/05/2025 07:37

You are definitely being unreasonable putting your car door against another car door - pregnant or not. Maybe make an excuse this time to your neighbour about being heavily pregnant but don't do it again. That's not ok.

Trolllol · 25/05/2025 07:31

OP when you’ve eventually given birth you’ll have a baby to get out of your car usually in a car seat. Unfortunately many spaces you’ll park will be tight and lots of places won’t have a child and parent parking spaces.

You may want to consider adjusting your method as I don’t imagine it will get the reception to match your attitude.

DarcyProudman · 25/05/2025 07:15

YABVVU to even ‘rest’ your car door on someone else’s car! If I saw you do that to mine, I’d be pretty pissed off… Oh and if you’ve left paint on hers, that’s not just a transfer. Stop being an entitled dick.

Why have you spent so much money on your house recently if you’re moving in 2 days

Purplegiraffe345 · 25/05/2025 06:09

I’m sorry you’ve had a lot of life stress at the moment, I can’t imagine renovating, moving and having a baby in a short space of time!

My suggestion is;

  • Call or text your neighbour to say that your husband’s managed to wipe the paint off but you are happy to look at the damage together if need be.
  • Stop reading this thread as some of the insensitive comments on here are not going to help you.
  • Take a deep breath.

Enjoy your new home and new baby!

FFS!!

I cannot fathom the hard time the OP has received on this thread. Utterly pathetic - the lot of you 😅

The paint mark came off !!! Drama over now folks. You'll have to go and clutch your pearls over something else now. Maybe have a gander at my 15 year old car and all its scratch marks that I do not give one shiny shit about because It Doesn't Matter....

@KaTobyHoneslty I have been through soo so much worse in these last 6 months of renovating my new house it’s nowhere near as bad as getting paint on someone’s car I’ve had lots and lots of brand new items damaged and parts of my house ruined by cowboys and dealt with so much and wasted soo much money whilst being pregnant it’s been hell! I know it’s not her problem but I’ve been through it so when I see something soo so minor like this I just think wow wish that’s all I had to worry about

Alright 😂 professional victim.

OhCalmTheFuckDownMargaret · 25/05/2025 06:01

raisingstars · 24/05/2025 21:57

@KaTobyWell how am I supposed to get out of my car if I have no space to fit through my door and heavily pregnant I have to lean my door on hers I don’t slam my door because I don’t want to damage my door too I’m not an idiot lol

Strange because you're certainly coming over as one.

EllasNonny · 25/05/2025 05:53

NRTFT. No poll but YABU. How the fuck do you think this is OK?

Velmy · 25/05/2025 05:49

You've marked their car - If its the kind of mark you can wipe off, wipe it off! If it's anything more, pay for it. Your pregnancy is irrelevant.

springintoaction321 · 25/05/2025 05:49

MNpenisadvisor · 25/05/2025 05:37

Not sure why your litany of problems are anything to do with her.. she's not gonna refrain from complaining about your actions because you're pregnant, back pain, damaged bath, moving house etc. and why SHOULD she? It's literally not her problem you're knocked up!

Wowzers - rude

Did your husband ask her permission before fiddling with her car this evening?
