RIP Summer: 2025-2025

Also, it's nearly midday, and so far it's been sunny today, (I've been up since 8am,) and it's 15 degrees C. Going to go up to 17-18 later. It may rain a bit later on, but it's not going to be all day!

It's always people who habitually go on holiday to places like Greece and the Canaries, too.

It's still only May. In the gardeners year we never plant annuals until mid may because you can't guarantee there wont be a frost before then.

I always think it's mad when people say summer doesn't start til 21 June. No, that's midsummer and from then on in the nights begin to shorten again.
May, June and July are when you get the long light nights so that's what I class as summer!

Exactly! And as soon as the temperature hits 26-27C, (around 80F!) we will have the 'OMG it's toooooooo HOT! I can't STAND IT. I HATE summer' threads coming in thick and fast!!! With this kind of emoji >>> 😫

No one knows whether the saying is the month or the hawthorn. As a previous poster mentions there's a good reason for that since they both usually occur at the same time. So you aren't necessarily wrong but since the meanings been lost and it's at the same time it's hardly incorrect either way.

Where I am in SW Scotland it seems the seasons are changing, the last 2/3 yrs has seen glorious weather Apr/may/jun and the actual summer has been grim. Last year especially so over the whole country.

We've just had 3 weeks of 22-27 degrees.....now it's sunny but with lots of heavy showers and I've so many outdoor jobs to do.

It keeps raining a bit here, but not enough to actually soak the ground. Istill feel like i need to actually water the plants. It's very windy, so not really very pleasant weather to do anything in.

To us pagans, summer began may 1st, hence mid summer solstice on june 21st this year so we are well into our summer.
Some peeps will always moan about the weather, sometimes you need to just dress for it and crack on. Climate change is doing all sorts of weird things to the planet and we just have to learn to adapt. Doesn't mean we can't be irritated or upset about it but I think it's better to change things in our way of thinking and look for some positives.
I doubt anyone wants torrential flooding or harsh droughts [ie1976 looking at you]. But we have to get on with it regardless because we can't change it.

It was unusually warm for a bit, now it's a little cooler. That's hardly winter.

last weekend was beautiful, perfect May weather

We've just had a brief downpour here and the sun is trying to come out. It's windy though and it's going to be windy, some rain and dullish for most of the week ahead. It's not that cold though which is a bonus.

Going to a big wedding next month so have fingers crossed that the weather for that weekend will be fine, sunny and warm, not baking hot, pleasantly warm.

There's a reason for Hawthorn being given the name, after all. Like Cockchafers being called May Bugs.

A few posters have said that, fair enough I was told wrong, but I've always found it works for the month of May too.

I thought that referred to the may blossom rather than the month of May.

It may feel cold but really we are boiling, according to science.

This isn’t talking about the month, it’s talking about may blossom.

I feel sorry for the kids on half term, especially those who were doing exams over the last few weeks. It's been so lovely since Easter but now it is raining torrentially and blowing a gale here and the forecast is poor for most of the coming week. I live in a popular tourist area so I think there are going to be lots of disappointed families. I feel really sorry for them, though we do actually need the rain as the reservoirs are very low and I was anticipating restrictions on water usage if the dry weather carried on much longer. It's just a shame that it had to come in the holidays.
I hardly think we can complain about Summer being over at this stage of the year though!

Same here in UK Beltaine and other spellings/ or 1 May is traditionally celebrated as start of summer.

It was 20 degrees C today, and didn't even rain til 3pm. And it's late MAY. There are another 3-4 months yet, where we could get (and will get) nice weather!

The weather is predicted to be dull and damp for the next week, but will very likely pick up by mid week. Met Office have been known to get forecasts wrong!

Great british westher - wind rain sun snow - all wonderful seasons! Makes our weather much more interesting- hate to live in a country with 28 degrees blazing sun day in day out for months! with no respite - it has been really unseasonally warm this year already ! Lets just enjoy the seasons instead of wishing them to come sooner ie - summer
