Have the school done the right thing even though it punishes the wrong set of people ?

DC is in year 6 and as I am sure everyone with a child in the same year is aware the leavers celebrations are in full swing.
The leavers hoodies were organised by the class parent rep.
The hoodies were handed out a while ago and the children have been proudly wearing them 2 days a week in school and were due to wear them for their residential.
unfortunately the Rep has purposely left 1 child without a hoody and also did not include their name on everyone else’s hoody.
I am not sure why it has only been bought to the attention of the school now, but they sent an email basically saying due to one child’s name not being on the hoody they are now banned from being worn on the school premises. Some very angry parents who think the school are punishing the children for something not in their control.
I am not sure what else the school could of done ? I believe they made the right decision but I seem to be the minority!

I am not sure I understand how a child seeing his name missing from the leavers hoodie ends up with him not going to the Y6 "prom". It's punishing him, not the rep?

The child does not feel welcome and the same rep organises the prom.

Good for that child - standing up against bullying. Seems like the children are being more grown up than the adults. I'm not surprised, as I said before the children in my child's school wouldn't allow this sort of bullying of a classmate, even if it's an adult doing it.

Let's hope more of the children step up and show the adults how to behave.

Lifealittleboulder · 24/05/2025 19:31

Eish those are some expensive hoodies!!

ours are £20 for kids sizes and £25 for adults. Parents were told if there was a concern over the price to speak discreetly to the teacher who would then speak to the school friends society who would then pay for that hoodie Or at least towards it. &30 plus is wild!

It seems to be trickling over to effecting leavers prom now as well.
Just seen on one of the other parents SM that there is another student bailing from the prom to go out with the other child instead.
it is a real shame that the children are being so affected.

I’m with you OP

Sadly, I’ve come across EXACTLY this type of behaviour with primary school parents

Stompythedinosaur · 24/05/2025 17:04

I think the school made the only possible choice.

The rep is a horrible cow and the unhappy parents should be directed to complain to her. I'd want my money back if I'd paid for a leavers hoodie and not received one. It isn't a leaver's hoodie with an editted list of kids picked by a parent.

The original argument well was not much of an argument because rep didn’t really try to communicate with other parent as they have a bad history was that
we were all paying for our own individual hoodies and was giving the cost and chose our sizes.
around 10 maybe a bit less had requested adult size hoodies and then the remaining 20 child size hoodies. The VAT was not included when we were asked to pay but no one knew that.
when it came to it the WhatsApp was messsged to ask us all to pay an additional few pound ( had already paid I think around 30.00 )
parent of child raised that she couldn’t afford the extra few pound right now or something along those lines but then I suppose rightly so said she had paid the full amount for her hoody because she had chosen a child sized one. The Rep decided that the VAT should be split between all 30 rather than those who had ordered adult sizes. So that’s as far as the convo was taken and she was refunded without being asked the full amount she has paid and then name was removed of the list.

Edited

@Mumof3bringwine this is VERY straightforward.

No, the kids should NOT be wearing them at all, and the school was right to ban them because it was outright bullying to exclude a child. The name should have remained even if they couldn't afford one.

If parents were aware that one child's name was being missed off then they should have protested against this.

If parents were not aware of the missing name until after they were printed, then the rep should be issuing them with a FULL refund. If I were a parent and found out they'd deliberately missed a child's name off, I'd be insisting on a full refund and would encourage everyone else to do the same.

People need to stand up to bullies, not let them get away with it.

Codlingmoths · 24/05/2025 14:59

So the school are exactly right, and it punishes all the right set of people except not enough bully mum and far too much bully child. You’re all letting it happen.

‘It’s a real shame’ is so fucking passive. At our school parents would have stepped in , told bully mum she’s out of the process and we are not grateful for her ‘help’ , another peep out of her on this topic and it will be her child with no jumper ans she can see how she likes it, then either added the number if possible or ordered new jumpers and donated extra to cover those who couldn’t afford it. And then bullied child would have a jumper .

so passive, while a child who goes to the same school as your child is being bullied and it woukd be easily fixed by one parent with a backbone.

Yes. I don’t know the complete reason as to why only snippets but yes.

That's outrageous. The school did EXACTLY the right thing.

I worked with a child a couple of years ago who had this done to him and he was heartbroken over it. His mum had a big disagreement with the woman ordering the hoodies, which spilled over into some of the children having minor fall out the woman left his name off on purpose. I really felt awful for the little boy who was left out.

So I think the school is being totally reasonable.

Melancholyflower · 24/05/2025 14:32

purpleshortcake2021 · 23/05/2025 23:33

This is awful ..particularly as deliberate. My son has never liked or been known as his first name and has been known as another name since reception. No teacher or child has ever called him by his actual first name and all his books / pegs were marked up as the name he likes to be known as. When the year 6 leavers hoodies came out he was devastated as he thought he had been left off. It turned out someone had used his legal first name which was repeated on the hoodie twice as another boy is called that. Obviously someone had a list of “ official names” and it had not been noticed. It was not deliberate but we had a week of tears every evening because people had asked why he wasn’t on the hoodies. He then refused to wear it to school, School were really apologetic and put me in touch with the local printer. In the end I paid to have them overprint his hoodie and squeeze his name into a gap. He was happy to wear the hoodie after that. A genuine mistake but it was so heartbreaking at the time. My heart goes out to the parents and child in this particular instance ….

This is exactly the sort of thing that doing it in school eliminates. We know what the children are known as, but we also check what name everyone wants to have inside the numbers, so Samuel known as Sam, will be asked which name he wants on there, for example.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 24/05/2025 14:24

JustMarriedBecca · 24/05/2025 06:38

The reps an idiot. What she should have done is leave the child's name on there as a class member (correct) but just refund and not order the hoody for the parent unwilling to pay (although if you order an adults size you should probably pay adult prices). Then give the adult refusing to pay the name and design and let them order theirs separately

If they wanted to make a point.

However, having organised several collections in the last however many years, I know some parents will put in £25 and some will put in none. We always sign the card from everyone but if the argument played out over £2.57 then just, realistically, no one has ever put in equal for everything.

What a mess though. School did the right thing.

But she wasn’t refusing to pay, she had paid for what she ordered and was now being asked to contribute to others.

Melancholyflower · 24/05/2025 14:12

uuuuu · 23/05/2025 23:31

Well maybe, maybe not. It isn’t clear cut. It was a bulk purchase of hoodies so could be reasonable for everyone to pay the same regardless of who incurred the VAT. Everyone ends up with a hoody that fits their child. It’s unfortunate that the govt taxes those of us with big kids. My kids were 6ft by the time they were 12. The clothing and shoes that I’ve paid VAT on for them over the years is a fucking disgrace. I do think there should be a reclaim scheme for kids like mine. A leavers hoody for a Y6 is only goign to be worn by a kid, regardless of what adult size they need. Thinking back, my kids both had leavers hoodies in adult sizes, but it was organised by the school and everyone paid the same.

Ours do pay slightly more for the larger, adult sizes, but we don't pay VAT on any ordered for children, although this year we did have to pay VAT on those ordered for staff.

If you don't volunteer, you can't complain. If you know better, then by all means, do volunteer and get involved.

Of course you can.

TheNightingalesStarling · 24/05/2025 12:01

Its a shame no one went to the school earlier in the process. But you can't wind back time.

Sounds like a whole group of grown women bullying a child because they don’t like their mum them! Absolutely awful.

It’s hard to explain the dynamic but the rep mum is not a pleasant person in general which causes fear amongst other parents.
more a really sad situation all around.

We were aware of the VAT issue, we were that she had questioned it and aware that said parent of adult hoodies had offered to pay the full amount and aware that rep was not happy.
That exact point the child being removed was not aired but it did go around shortly after that in private messaging rep had removed said child. School were emailed when hoodies arrived with name not on it by other parent etc

on the actual WhatsApp no one said much but I’m guessing that is a combination of the mums that are reps friends and therefor also have issues with said mum and then the usual parents being worried scared to say anything in front of rep because of previous instances of playground fights.

Sendcrisis2025 · 24/05/2025 11:18

No school could knowingly allow these to be worn in school with one child deliberately excluded.

What an awful parent.

Sorry then you play stupid games you win stupid prizes. Hopefully these parent's kids can learn that faster than their parents have.

Something I'm not sure you've been asked OP...Were the rest of you aware that the rep was going to leave this child off? When the VAT was queried did she say that this would be the consequence of removing the order? If so you all got what you deserve tbh and you need to use this as a teaching opportunity to your kids that if you're callous about other people's feelings there are consequences. If you didn't know then you really should be pressurising the rep to rectify this. Being willing to take the lead doesn't mean you get to wield your power against a child.

Was the older thread about the VAT issue yours as well, OP?
