To have not shared the chips?

We went to see a band last night and I drove as I don’t drink. On the way back we stopped off to get a takeaway. Just kebab and chips. As soon as we got back in car with takeaway DP opens the chips and starts scoffing them. I kept saying “can you at least wait until we get home?? We’re 5 minutes away!” And he said “I’m only having a few”.

By time we got home only half bag of chips remained (probably even less) so I put them all on my plate and just put a kebab on his.

He inevitably reacted with shock and horror asking where his chips were so I said “in your stomach”. He insisted he’d only had a couple, more than half of the bag was gone. He “demanded” that I share the chips, I refused. He went in a mood.

He does this all the time, can’t possibly wait 5 minutes until we get home, has to start eating immediately whilst I’m driving. Normally I share what’s left but after repeatedly asking him to stop, I refused this time. He said I was being petty. I said he’d rude to start tucking into a shared meal before I can join in. Who is right?

He does the same with popcorn at the cinema, huge handfuls so now I buy separate. Even then he has the cheek to start digging into mine when his is empty.

He went in a mood because he'd eaten his food & you wouldn't give him some of yours?

Bloody hell!

Foreverexhausted1 · 22/05/2025 17:40

My DH can be like this sometimes. He acts like he hasn't been fed for a week. It disgusts and annoys me too. I wouldn't have shared the chips either!

ThatCyanCat · 22/05/2025 17:40

If he had the bag open the whole way back, then your chips were probably going cold by the time you got them too. It must have been messy if they weren't wrapped as open, which I assume they weren't if the plan was to eat when you got home. It's unappealing in a relationship.

ThatCyanCat · 22/05/2025 17:35

I'm no teeny tiny and I love my food. It would piss me off, not because I mind sharing but because it just shows a complete lack of respect, or care that I should get my fair share. I'd have to just keep everything separate, if it wasn't a sign of selfishness deeper in the relationship too (but I expect it is).

If you two do stick together because neither can be arsed to finish it… stop sharing food

Or buy more chips.

SwanOfThoseThings · 22/05/2025 17:26

If he has form for this, why don't you get separate portions?

Onedayiwillsomething · 22/05/2025 17:25

Cinema- buy one portion and ask for 2 boxes and just split it.

again in the chippy, ask them to measure out a portion and then split it and wrap them separately.

I lived with this with my ex taking one man handful and I’d take a piece. Excellent diet, but annoying as fuck (particularly as I was paying for everything)

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 22/05/2025 17:24

Gluttony is so unattractive.

PlacidPenelope · 22/05/2025 17:24

Greedy, selfish, entitled and moody - very unattractive character traits.

You are not unreasonable @TommyAndGinaAreHalfWayThere I couldn't put up with that behaviour it would turn me cold.

INeedAnotherName · 22/05/2025 17:24

This was one of the reasons for me getting divorced. The underlying traits regarding selfishness and greed around food are disrespect towards their partner in general as he doesn't view you as a person with your own needs and/or wants. It also doesn't bode well if you have children together as his wants are higher than even the babies/children. Eventually you will become angry and frustrated with him most of the time. It's a relationship killer.

IchBinPapst · 22/05/2025 17:23

My DH prioritises feeding himself over everything else and will happily see others go hungry so he has food. Its so, so selfish.

All I can advise is that you take steps not to share food. Its miserable but necessary with some (quite a lot of them, actually) men.

No kids, for those who are concerned.

This is so ridiculously over the top.

That would annoy me too OP, greed isn't a nice trait.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 22/05/2025 17:22

"Joey doesn't share food".

Let me re-word it then, would the poster labelling the man as a “pig” have said the same if it was a woman who couldn’t wait to eat a few chips in the car?

A few chips, no.

This situation, where she's eaten half the chips in the car but still expects half of what's left at home, ie 75% of the chips - yes.

Isometimeswonder · 22/05/2025 17:19

I would have a no food in the car rule.

YANBU. The real issue as I see it is entitlement and your invisibility.

this man feels entitled to more than his share. He sees your needs as unimportant. Ask him why? Does he think the big man needs more chips than women? Can he explain it any other way.

it won’t change so you’ll have to treat him like your greedy child. If you stay with such a selfish type definitely make him correct his action eg rebuy sausages, take away in boot. No food sharing.

This. Quite apart from greed and selfishness making my fanjo clamp shut, I'd want to hear him explain WHY he's entitled, in his own mind, to more than you.

If he does this a lot, ask him if he's aware that he's basically saying to himself (and therefore to you) "Fuck you, TommyAndGina, I'm going to take more than my fair share because you're less important than me."

Every. Single. Time.

Mrsttcno1 · 22/05/2025 17:18

I couldn’t be doing with the greed but I assume you’re otherwise happy with him if he’s like this all of the time and you haven’t left yet?

In that case I’d just have stopped sharing food a long time ago, separate portions and then there’s no agg.

FairHedgehog · 22/05/2025 17:06

Getting worked up over a few chips and then starting a whole post. This is ridiculous!

As is often the case, by the time someone posts about something seemingly trivial, there's a whole load of back story built up.

He thinks he's more important than you OP. He wants, he gets, even if it means you going without. Greed is horrible, it's selfish and unkind. What a guy.

TommyAndGinaAreHalfWayThere · 22/05/2025 16:45

Where on earth did I say we’d moved in together?!

The 'when we got home' implied it.

Branleuse · 22/05/2025 17:09

Sounds like next time you should get two portions of chips if he always wants some for the journey but still wants full portion at home.

KnittyNell · 22/05/2025 17:09

ThejoyofNC · 22/05/2025 16:59

What a weird question. Women can be greedy pigs too. As far as I know the word "pig" doesn't refer to any particular sex.

Let me re-word it then, would the poster labelling the man as a “pig” have said the same if it was a woman who couldn’t wait to eat a few chips in the car?

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 22/05/2025 17:06

This is me OP. I'm greedy around food. I was brought up with a father who would constantly start digging into my food and taking massive spoonfuls of my dessert because it was "funny". I'd go to the cupboard to eat my easter egg and find it was gone.

As a result I've turned into him. I have this obsession with making sure I get my "fair share", which ends up with me actually getting more than my fair share. The difference between me and your boyfriend though OP is that I know I do it, so I take steps not to be like that.

I don't share meals. In the situation you describe I'd always buy my own portion. I buy my own snacks, and have a shelf in the kitchen cupboard that they live in, and I don't touch anything in any of the others. In a group situation where we've ordered a chinese takeaway, I always wait till everyone else has served themselves before getting my own, and won't go up to get seconds until everyone else has or is full.

DP knows why I'm like this, and says I don't need to be so rigid about it, but I know that if she discovers the alternative, she'll find it deeply unattractive.
