To have not shared the chips?

We went to see a band last night and I drove as I don’t drink. On the way back we stopped off to get a takeaway. Just kebab and chips. As soon as we got back in car with takeaway DP opens the chips and starts scoffing them. I kept saying “can you at least wait until we get home?? We’re 5 minutes away!” And he said “I’m only having a few”.

By time we got home only half bag of chips remained (probably even less) so I put them all on my plate and just put a kebab on his.

He inevitably reacted with shock and horror asking where his chips were so I said “in your stomach”. He insisted he’d only had a couple, more than half of the bag was gone. He “demanded” that I share the chips, I refused. He went in a mood.

He does this all the time, can’t possibly wait 5 minutes until we get home, has to start eating immediately whilst I’m driving. Normally I share what’s left but after repeatedly asking him to stop, I refused this time. He said I was being petty. I said he’d rude to start tucking into a shared meal before I can join in. Who is right?

He does the same with popcorn at the cinema, huge handfuls so now I buy separate. Even then he has the cheek to start digging into mine when his is empty.

Why doesn't HE drive?

OP said that she drove because she doesn’t drink - not that he can’t drive.

thinks he deserves more than his partner

This. He thinks he’s more deserving of food than you.

My exh was a bit like that. If we’d get a takeaway he’d be very much of the mindset “oh we mustn’t over order”.

But then when the food came, he’d be yomphing into everything before I’d had a chance to sit down. Putting more than his share on his plate, eating at break neck speed to make sure he got more of the food.

whynotwhatknot · 22/05/2025 23:25

its not the point if its chips kebab or whatever hes selfish and thinks he deserves more than his partner

how old is he op

Is 'buy more chips' the new 'cancel the cheque'?

It's just good life advice in general. More chips!

It's not about the chips

I've just remembered what this reminds me of. There was a thread a couple of years ago from a woman whose "d" h would eat any food left in the fridge or anywhere. Leftovers intended for another meal, entire precooked meals, the kids' snacks and treats, anything and everything. She begged, pleaded, threatened, tried to reason with him. He would either laugh, ignore her, or get nasty.

I got down a rabbit hole on Reddit the other week about the exact same issue!! There were hundreds of posts of women talking about their male partners eating everything, being selfish and thinking they were most important and needed more/all of the food. A lot of women were disclosing that this was used as a form of abuse - the partners depriving them of food by eating it all. It’s a lot more common than we realise. I’m not saying this is the case for @TommyAndGinaAreHalfWayThere but as a minimum, it’s selfish and greedy behaviour. OP your partner needs a reality check as this isn’t appropriate behaviour to have and quite frankly a huge turn off. A loving partner would offer their food to you and make sure your needs are met, not the other way around.

Longsight2019 · 22/05/2025 22:04

This sounds like my tight bastard uncle who munches his way through anything left lying around at Christmas gatherings whilst contributing nothing, chomping loudly and making annoying mmm mmm noises. He can’t stop himself and is so unaware that most of the other adults present are all watching him in disgust.

Dump.

diddl · 22/05/2025 20:31

Because they thought it would be enough?

But if you have a partner you know is ‘greedy’ then this makes no sense.

He’s obviously unreasonable to try to eat more than his share but if this is a ‘thing’ then you buy your own portions surely?

Pomegranatecarnage · 22/05/2025 21:14

You need to have a no eating in the car rule.

TomatoSandwiches · 22/05/2025 21:12

thetrumanshow · 22/05/2025 18:03

unclench, it's just chips. We have absolutely no idea if he's genuinely greedy, and unattractively overweight or normally active and very fit looking!

Op has said he's like this with all food so no, it's doesn't matter if he is fit and healthy, it's pure greed and selfishness to take your half and then expect portions of other people's food or to take all of something from anyone's fridge or cupboard without checking its ok.

My brother was like this from toddler age and as the eldest I always had to give in to him for my part of something, he's like it now as a grown man, greedy and selfish with food and uncaring about fairness, it's a vile trait imo.

Daleksatemyshed · 22/05/2025 21:06

It isn't about buying extra portions, it's about one person thinking they're entitled to eat more. Greediness is a dealbreaker for me, it's the me me me attitute.

ImaginaryLobster · 22/05/2025 21:06

New rule takeaway food goes in the boot on way home

godmum56 · 22/05/2025 21:03

HaddyAbrams · 22/05/2025 19:20

Exactly. Everyone bar my DS shares. He has his own food as its the only thing he eats. Yet the rest of my family think this makes him greedy or selfish.

Personally I love sharing takeaways s you can have more variety than everyone ordering 1 dish just for them. But only if others are also happy to share.

I get this! I enjoy an Indian or Chinese takeaway but there are things I dislike.....anything too spicy, anything with coconut in are the main ones. My late DH didn't like any shellfish. On our own we would just choose what we liked and share stuff we both liked but ordering in a crowd to share was a nightmare.

GoodWorkSally · 22/05/2025 20:48

I once purposely did not eat one chip from my plate so I could tell him he'd eaten them all. He didn't believe me

I have resolved this by always ordering an extra bowl of chips, regardless.

ArtTheClown · 22/05/2025 20:45

I genuinely dont get why people stay with and marry greedy, selfish men.

abracadabra1980 · 22/05/2025 20:43

NoNameMum · 22/05/2025 16:34

Stop buying shared meals. Buy a meal each.

This! Why or earth do you want to share chips with a man who has a greed history?

GoodWorkSally · 22/05/2025 20:43

I completely feel your pain. Mine does this, always has. Also, if out for a pub dinner, he'll start nicking my chips as soon as his are gone, or if he hasn't ordered chips, straight away. "Just a couple" he'll say.

Newsflash. Your world isn't the world.

I know plenty of "only children" who don't know anything about sharing and can be pretty selfish. Does that cancel out your experience?

I don't believe that every only child you know is bad with sharing, and ever child with siblings is perfect in that respect. That just isn't a thing.

HaddyAbrams · 22/05/2025 20:33

Merryoldgoat · 22/05/2025 20:19

I don’t get it - why has only one meal been bought for two people?

To be fair, we don't know how big the portions are. My local kebab place does a kebab that could easily feed 4.
And if it was on the way home from somewhere presumably it wasn't a meal as such. Just one person was drunk and hungry so they shared something.

Shufflebumnessie · 22/05/2025 20:32

You did share the chips, he just chose to eat his whilst in the car.
From the sound of it he's greedy, has no impulse control or patience. He sounds like a man-child. Ick!
If you decide to share any food in the future then put it straight in the boot, that way he can't sit there scoffing it like a selfish pig!

Merryoldgoat · 22/05/2025 20:19

Presumably the chips are a large portion, like chippy ones.

We only ever get one portion of chips for the 3 of us to share.
