To think it’s actually really unfair to be charged for bank holidays at nursery?

And no, I’m not going to complain about it because I don’t want anyone to think I begrudge the staff a day off. I don’t. But I do resent paying for a service I’m not receiving.

I know what you mean, but it's your choice. Your choice to have kids, you choice to send them to nursery and your choice to send them on a Monday.

SpicyWater · 21/05/2025 00:16

They are not sent in though. The full post was about the fact that the Monday children are not allowed to attend nursery on a BH Monday however, the parents are still expected to pay even though the nursery is closed.

And it's ONLY the Monday parents that are expected to pay for a day when they are not getting to put their children in childcare as it's closed for the BH.

This essentially means that Monday children loose out on 5-8 days of paid childcare compared to their peers that don't usually attend on Mondays, as they are closed for a BH.

Edited

I only read the original thread which did not state this.

Do all nursery’s do this? I mean are they all shut on a BH? My nieces attend a nursery that is open BH. They pay extra for that day

Well if they are sent on Mondays, which is a bank hold at then yes, you should pay

Oh hun. It's OK.

Resorting to insults because you have misunderstood what the op was saying. Great. Tells me all I need to know know about you.

Maybe if you read the full text and didn't just cherry pick the parts that suit your motive, you would have been able to comprehend that.

sunflowersblooming · 20/05/2025 23:32

Annoyed me too when mine were young. I think the cost for paying staff for bank holidays (and annual leave) should be spread across all users of the service proportionally.

Poster: "So, how will they pay the staff if you don't pay for the day?"

OP: "Out of their profits."

Literally couldn't be clearer.

Yes their profits from EVERY parent. Not just the MONDAY parents like the OP SMH.

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 20/05/2025 23:23

It's not me who needs to re-read.

Here's the OP's third post. Literally exactly what I was saying. She pays extra for Mondays when it should be equal between everyone and not penalise only the Monday users.

"Out of their profits.
The reason it annoys me is because if you send your child on a Monday then you get hit with a charge for a service you don’t get. But if you send your child on a Thursday you don’t.
**
Mine attend Mondays and Fridays so this is the fourth one this year."
**
And no, I don’t get paid if I don’t go to work. But I don’t mind them being paid. I just don’t feel it should be from my pocket.

I literally say in my post I don’t begrudge the staff a day off. That’s not what this is about.

She didn’t ask if you begrudge staff a day off, she asked if you get paid for bank holidays.

Which you avoided answering so you clearly do get paid on bank holidays.

If I had the energy I'd screen shot them all to prove you wrong, but I don't.

No doubt the op will clear that up for you later

IwasDueANameChange · 20/05/2025 23:25

Yanbu, it would be fairer to ensure that the hourly rates across the board allow the nursery to pay staff on bank holidays, without charging parents of monday kids the same as everyone else but giving them less service.

If they have staff who don't work mondays, they are still entitled to pro rata bank holiday leave so why should monday/friday parents be disproportionately hit.

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 20/05/2025 23:23

SpicyWater · 20/05/2025 23:11

No it's not. You need to re-read her posts.

This is exactly what she means and I agree because I'm also an unfairly penalised Monday parent that gets a weeks less childcare for the same price as others.

Tumbleweed101 · 20/05/2025 23:19

We don’t charge bank holidays or our Xmas week closure. Costs are absorbed through yearly pricing so it is fair for all parents.

OrangeQualityStreetAreTheBest · 20/05/2025 23:14

YANBU. The nursery, a business, should factor this in to their pricing as part of their overheads.

It's why I didn't send my kids on a Monday - I was lucky to have family support that were flexible on which day they could have them.

SpicyWater · 20/05/2025 23:11

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 20/05/2025 23:07

That's not what she's whinging about. She thinks holiday pay should come out of profits and not from parents.

Because people that don't use nursery on a Monday get an additional 5+ days per year, compared to those that do use nursery on a Monday.

It should be split evenly between all parents or the Monday children should get reduced fees for the missed days.

doodleschnoodle · 20/05/2025 22:58

Plenty of people don’t even get the specific bank holiday days off. BHs are just included in our holiday entitlement because bank holidays are normal working days in my industry, as they are for a lot of people. Nursery being closed on a bank holiday would be super inconvenient for us as I would have to take a holiday day or pay for childcare somewhere else, so I’m very grateful our nursery doesn’t close for any of them. I assume they are same as me, they get the days included in their holiday allowance to take as normal holiday.

Whenever I take DD2 to nursery on a bank holiday, it’s just as full as usual. I don’t actually know of any private nurseries around us that close on bank holidays, just the school nurseries for 3+.

You don't get paid bank holidays? How? Unless you're self employed. Soz.

Edited

Most people don't. Most people don't even get them off.

It's more unusual to get them off and get paid.

Ponderingwindow · 20/05/2025 22:49

If my child attends part-time on particular days, it would be reasonable to expect my fees to be different depending upon which days my child attends.

So given the Monday frequency of bank holidays a Monday-Tuesday fee should be lower than a Tuesday-Wednesday fee.

it’s still easier if things are calculated by year or term instead of wasting time generating invoices.

SpicyWater · 20/05/2025 22:48

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 20/05/2025 22:24

You pay for all the staff's holidays, 5.6 weeks a year, not just the bank holidays. It's part of your fees. Why get upset about the bank holidays only?

It should be split evenly between all parents or the Monday children should get reduced fees for the missed days.

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 20/05/2025 22:48

CopperWhite · 20/05/2025 18:08

Do you get paid for bank holidays?

The company should cover that though, not the customers!

SpicyWater · 20/05/2025 22:46

I completely agree.

My dc goes to nursery Mon, Tue and Thu. My friends dc goes to nursery Tue, Wed and Thurs.

We both pay the exact same fees however they receive an extra 5+ days to what I get as they don't attend on a Monday.

I still work on bank holidays so I'm then left to fork out even more on additional childcare.

They need to increase the fees so the bank Holiday bill is split evenly between everyone that attends. This way the staff can be paid for their days off (although I don't get paid for bank holidays off.) This way, one group isn't being penalised for attending Mondays.

Not everyone has the choice to not use nurseries on a Monday to avoid the fees without getting the service.
