Plumber in toilet for ages when I got home

Had a boiler service today - was on school run when he wanted to arrive so left the garage key accessible and opened door from garage into house so he could check what he needed. It wasn’t the usual one we have, someone who worked for him, so not sure what message was passed on. Arrived home after drop off and went to offer him a drink, but no sign…until I realised downstairs bathroom was locked. I have a 2 year old so he would definitely have known we were home, and front door is right next to toilet. He came out about 15/ 20 mins later!!!! He immediately shut door behind him and I didn’t dare open it for hours but window had also been left wide open.
I am totally totally ok with being asked to use bathroom, I understand people need to go. But I felt so freaked out to come home, know he was in my house and him not appear for SO long?!! Is that ok?! He hurriedly said he’d needed the bathroom and rushed to garage. I think it’s just the weirdness of never having met him and him walking through my house and being in the house without me having a clue who he was.

would this freak you out?!

Is there a difference between the fruit of your loins and a random plumber?

Let me see… 🤔

The poster said that she doesn’t want anyone she’s not married to shitting in her toilet, I’m going to assume she’s not married to the ‘fruits of her loin’!

I hope you don’t have sons. If so, would they be banned from shitting in your toilets when they turn 18?

Desecrating the toilet 🤣

It's a toilet 🤷🏼‍♀️ it's what it's for

lol i thought while writing. HOWEVER I would say - I fully agree with him not walking out with trousers round his ankles. That would’ve been ever so slightly more awkward. However - 20 minutes?!! I don’t get men’s obsession with needing so long on the toilet - I don’t think I’ve ever spent 20 minutes having a poo in my life. 20 minutes when you’re in a strangers house when you know they’re outside?!

I'm thinking he might have panicked when he heard you arrive home and wondered if he could leave the toilet unnoticed if he waited a bit. Or his poo was so smelly that he didn't dare open the door until it had dissipated. Or, he was on his phone having a long poo (my DH can be on the toilet for ages once he falls down a YouTube rabbit hole 😂. You will probably never know the answer and that's probably for the best. Hope he actually did the job he was there for (as well as a big job...)

DiscoBeat · 20/05/2025 19:53

Shock horror, someone used the bathroom. You left a key for him, why be 'so freaked out' he used the toilet? MN is bonkers on this subject.

Why do you allow anyone in your house when you're not there, if you find their presence in your house, alone, so unsettling?
Just make sure you're going to be home for the whole time you have a tradesman in your house in future! Problem solved

Laura95167 · 20/05/2025 18:45

Sounds like he was desperate and equally embarrassed

Airspice · 20/05/2025 18:26

How on earth does it take 20 minutes to do a poo?!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 20/05/2025 18:24

If you're paying him by the hour that particular 'job' will have cost you about another £20 into the bargain!

Then there's the toilet paper...I bet he's not a 'two square' man.

PoopingAllTheWay · 20/05/2025 18:18

Why do so many people have issues with Trade people having a poo

So odd !

Lucylongcat · 20/05/2025 18:14

If it was urgent, surely it would have come quicker? And if it wasn't urgent, then he should have saved it for home. It was a home poo.

On the other hand, at least if he blocked the toilet, he was well qualified to sort it out.

Annascaul · 19/05/2025 19:34

Of course it would feel creepy, op.

On Mumsnet, you’re supposed to operate a free toilet policy, inviting postmen, delivery drivers and passing dogs in to use your toilet or they’ll tell you you’re just repressed 😂

Hardly. But if someone is in your house to do work then it’s common courtesy to allow them use of your facilities. Only on MN have I ever seen such hysterics over it.

Disability aside, there is no medical reason why a healthy man, or anyone, needs 20+ minutes to do a shit.

Some medications cause chronic constipation. Just saying.

PeapodMcgee · 20/05/2025 17:17

Ponoka7 · 19/05/2025 19:10

Do you know for sure that he doesn't have a stoma? Or other bowel condition? It's a hidden disability. While I agree that some men can spend a long time on the toilet, other times it can be medical. We rake longer to wee, they take longer to do the other. Live and let live.

For my own peace and sanity, I’m choosing to believe those people are just being wind-up merchants. You can’t possibly go through life not knowing that medical conditions exist.

Not even just medical conditions but that all humans are just...you know, different?

You're right about wind-up merchants I think because nobody can be that dim, surely?

What about other bodily functions like periods? Do they think all women's bodies are exactly the same with those too?

Or do they accept the biological facts surrounding the differences?

I’m on medication for a chronic pain condition that causes such bad constipation 20 minutes is nothing for me. Not everyone’s bowel habits will be like yours. If he was mid poo when you walked in he might have just been dying from embarrassment after a particularly smelly one.

Honestly, the number of people on here who think there’s one single ‘normal’ length of time for a crap to take. Some people really don’t seem to have much experience of life beyond their own experiences.

I think if he could have come out sooner, he probably would have done.

This! I imagine he was at least as uncomfortable as you about it!

It’s reminding me of a short story about a malingering young builder who gets locked into the house/flat where he’s working for the weekend when his boss forgets about him when he’s leaving, and his phone is in the boss’s van. No openable windows or doors, or windows too high, and he’s too afraid just to sit about and explain because the woman who lives there, who doesn’t return till after a night out, will think he’s an intruder. I think he hides in the attic crawl space all weekend.

TooGoodToGoto · 20/05/2025 07:20

HunnyPot · 19/05/2025 21:42

A 20min shit isn’t normal. Have you ever worked in an office where someone disappears for 20 mins during the working day to take a crap?

Yep, often.

Just turn the wi-fi off before you leave the house.

Does anyone have anything but loads of data or unlimited?
