Is is right that an unpopular govt can reverse the democratic wishes of the UK to have nothing to do with Europe?

I don't care how many times he went to the stupid EU Parliament.

He was voted in on a Tory ticket and then defected to the Liberals. My parents never voted for him again because he was a turncoat..

Hope your parents were alright after that ordeal.

Is this a reform recruitment thread? Selling unicorns and magic beans.

There's a new YouGov poll out which asks who would be the best Prime Minister. 44% say Starmer and 29% say Farage. Starmer also beats Kemi Badenoch and Ed Davey who both also beat Farage.

I don't think he is as popular as his deluded acolytes think. They are actually selling spite and hatred although this particular Reform recruiter is in cloud cuckoo land with her refusal to answer questions without resorting to the old Brexit slogans about getting their country back . They may be poor but they will be happy because they are allowed, indeed actively encouraged, to be cruel to migrants and people with non-British ancestry.

I looked him up, he crossed the floor in 2000

He was elected as a Liberal Democrat MEP for the first time in the 2004 election.

He said he had the highest attendance record of all the UK MEPs when elected.

He was re-elected in 2009.

At the end of the day, Leave won! We won, yay! If you want to join with the winners, join Reform UK! Nige is making a major speech today and will show how he will lower prices, end immigration and free the UK from the remaining burdensome EU regulation, things the Tories and Labour have failed to do!

He won't do anything because he will never be in the government and he knows it, which is why he can make all these promises he is incapable of delivering.

What country did you live in before Brexit that wasn't a democracy?

A concrete example of how Farage has improved people's lives? He is the man behind Brexit, and so it is he more than anyone that we should thank for allowing us to live in a democracy again.

That's not a concrete example. It's just meaningless airy-fairy bollocks. In what practical ways has your life improved since leaving the EU? Have your wages increased? Are your bills lower? Is your health better? You got a proper hard Brexit from Boris so your life must have improved in some quantifiable way. You can't just quote the old slogans about 'sovreignty' and 'getting your country back'.

How is he 'out-Labouring Labour' when he wants to get rid of the NHS? He wants to move to an insurance model, which will be catastrophic for people with pre-existing conditions, like most pensioners, as they either won't be able to afford to pay the insurance premiums or will have to pay massive sums to be insured.

He is promising all sorts of things that will be impossible to deliver. Please give some examples of concrete improvements to people's lives that Nigel has made during his many many years in politics.

At least they were true to their mindset about hating the EU.

No, they were hypocrites. Hated the EU yet took its money.

As well as their pensions

At least they were true to their mindset about hating the EU.

Some MEPs got voted in as a member of one party and then changed their mind when they got there.

Apparently MEPs can "swap sides" as often as they like because there is no facility for removing the whip - or similar. So a smack in the face for those who trusted them to represent their interests and mistakenly campaigned for them to be elected.

My parents MEP Bill Newton-Dunne did just this (Tory to Liberal) to the chagrin of his hard-working supporters

I presume from the perspective of what will most benefit the US.

Not necessarily - https://www.morningstar.co.uk/uk/news/265194/inflation-surge-pressures-bank-of-england.aspx

Yes, I think we have established now that you are talking about the US one, not the UK one

Boaty McBoatface was a fine name!
Nige has out-Conservatived the Conservatives, now he is out-Labouring Labour:
WFP is back, child cap gone, he will promise more and more and Starmer will try but fail to match him- because Nige doesn't have to produce results, only complain. Reform UK will give UK politics a good shake-up - a cheaper, streamlined NHS and we'll re-open the coal mines. We'll probably tariff imports to bring back manufacturing as well!

So you are talking about Morningstar, Inc, a US financial services firm not the British newspaper?

Why would people in the UK use them as a source of credible information about Europe and Brexit?

Because it covers European Financial matters.

StandFirm · 27/05/2025 09:11

thepariscrimefiles · 27/05/2025 08:10

It's 'the Morning Star'. It's a left wing paper, formerly founded as the Daily Worker by the British Communist Party, that has never supported the EU considering it to be elitist and anti-working class.

I very much doubt that you are anti-EU from a left wing perspective given your posts so I'm assuming that you are referencing their anti-EU stance out of ignorance rather than knowledge.

Also, afraid to say that Russia has hated the EU for at least 20 years. Brexit (and MAGA) are absolutely playing into the hands of foreign nations hoping for the demise of Western powers. But sure, let's go all nationalist and get poorer whilst others feast on our carcass.

TheQuirkyMaker · 27/05/2025 09:06

Alexandra2001 · 27/05/2025 08:04

Yep, couldn't even name a bloody boat without being idiotic!

Any re-joining of the EU or EFTA etc aim should be in a manifesto, as closer ties with the EU was in Labours one.

Haha! It wasn't that I couldn't be arsed, I was just supremely confident we would vote Remain. As was all the press, polls and the Prime Minister. Don't blame us non-voters, blame the Remain campaign

All polling leading into the final days/weeks of the vote were all within the margin of error for a Leave win, anyone who thought otherwise wasn't paying attention.

A lot of the right wing thugs supporting Reform hardly have two brain cells to rub together so probably wouldn't fare particularly well in the dog eat dog, survival of the fittest society that Nigel wants

'Fraid so. They're the sort of blokes who stick a firework in their arse and their friends light it.
