Is is right that an unpopular govt can reverse the democratic wishes of the UK to have nothing to do with Europe?

I'm to blame for the UK leaving the EU? Haha!

If people like you had bothered to vote we wouldn't have left. So yes.

BustingBaoBun · 23/05/2025 09:36

Just going back... we joined the EEC in 1973 from a parliamentary decision, then there was a bit of a hoo haaa as to whether we should stay in. So it was put to the people.

I'm old, I voted to stay in, in 1975 and I have just looked. 67% of the votes across all nations were to stay in, 33% not. I can remember voting and being so pleased with the result. Even back then.

Cameron is responsible for Brexit... he called the referendum, with no min % margin, such as you have in any sports club, to change its rules.

He is a weak odious excuse for a man.

Farage Bojo et al all played their part too but ultimately Cameron handed them the gun.

And then he ran away

And plenty of brexiteers who wanted to leave the EU because of 'unelected, unaccountable elites". now sit as unelected members of the HoL

Haha! It wasn't that I couldn't be arsed, I was just supremely confident we would vote Remain. As was all the press, polls and the Prime Minister. Don't blame us non-voters, blame the Remain campaign.

What a ridiculous thing to say.

cantkeepawayforever · 23/05/2025 09:34

My grandfather used to say ‘If you don’t vote, you are not allowed to complain about the result’. I think that’s fair.

TheQuirkyMaker · 23/05/2025 09:32

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 23/05/2025 09:19

Oooo

where should i put people who voted for brexit but didn’t actually think we would leave…there were a few of these interviewed after the vote

they are third I reckon

I personally know a few. They just wanted to give the middle finger to the govt. They were shocked by the outcome. Mind you, it was close, wasn't it?

Well yes, you and others like you, who were keen to stay in, but didn't bother to use your voice bear some responsibility for it.

Those who voted Leave as ‘a harmless protest vote because they weren’t that happy with the Government’ were always amongst my favourites.

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 23/05/2025 09:29

DuncinToffee · 23/05/2025 09:26

I would put Cameron above Farage on that list.

Very fair point….the referendum should have been advisory at that point imo (like all the other referendums) it wasn’t legally binding

it would have given them a chance to work out how we would leave and have a vote on that…or negotiate with the EU based on the passion for leaving

or maybe they would have come to their fucking senses

BustingBaoBun · 23/05/2025 09:27

My favourite are those who voted for Brexit, but now flatly deny it.

I have a friend in particular who voted out, she now joins in, in all the conversations about what a shitshow Brexit is, nodding along in agreement. I early on challenged her and said "but you told me you had voted Leave, we had at least three conversations about it!"
She says "no, I didn't vote Leave". Hahahahaha, yes you did!

No. Take responsibility. I know of others who complain only to find out later they never bothered to vote when the polling stations were open from 7am to 10pm.

I’m expecting people whose loved ones are essentially dead but kept ‘alive’ and attached to machines to gestate babies in the US for the government to prevent an ‘abortion’ to also exclaim they never expected Trump to win so never bothered to vote.

No mate

in order (imo)

Farage
you and anyone else that decided that they couldn’t be arsed to vote
people who voted for brexit
David Cameron
people who ran a lackluster remain campaign

i could move the bottom three around to be fair 🤔

You did nothing to prevent it, did you?

BustingBaoBun · 23/05/2025 09:13

I just cannot imagine not voting in something so so crucial. My DCs were at the polling station before work and were absolutely unbelievably gutted at the result. We did a group whatsapp call, it is seared on my brain. Such disappointment and worry as to how it would affect them going forward.

TheQuirkyMaker · 23/05/2025 09:13

Stop saying we

there is no we if it includes you in this scenario

you didn’t vote remain

and yes…you couldn’t be bothered

The polls leading into the last month or two of the vote, were all well within the margin of error for these sorts of things 1 to 2% +/-.

Remainers not voting made the difference, i'd have thought that was obvious?

Thats not to say the Remain campaign was stella, it wasn't, they failed to get a charismatic figure head who could counter xxxx Farage and Bojo, 2 very charismatic people.

SocialEvent · 23/05/2025 08:39

The Remaining campaign was shit and complacent I do agree
It was run by people who thought they were above the mud being slung online by Brexiteers and didn’t get out there to disprove the fountains of bullshit being spread about

Johnson moving over to Brexit side purely to try to stab Cameron in the back to get the PM job for himself, really legitimised the insanity of the Brexiteers at the time.

The more ‘money for the NHS’ lie- for which I wish the Leave Campaign would be held legally culpable, took in a lot of people who didn’t have a strong view either way but saw the NHS struggling under the Tories

And the geography of the Leave vote reflected a class-ridden tale as old as time int he UK. no political party had sufficiently supported the UK outside of London and the South East especially since Thatcher ruined UK industries and after decades still no help to put in place new industries. So whole swathes of the UK were just left to struggle and rot. I don’t blame anyone who voted for a change, any change under those conditions.

Notonthestairs · 23/05/2025 08:31

Blaming other people for your failure to vote. Hilarious.

This is absolutely idiotic.

You couldn't be arsed because of your supremely misplaced confidence that we would vote remain. So you sat on your arse at home and left the decision up to the people who passionately wanted to leave.

The polls showed that it was going to be a close run thing.

The remain campaign was shit, yes, but if you wanted to remain you should have voted. The non voters would have easily swung it the other way.

So yes, I do and will continue to blame you.
