To think it's inappropriate for parents to use sexualised humour around their 18+ children?

Really just curious to find out what others think.

I personally find it really uncomfortable and I'm not ok joking with my own kids in this way.

We were with friends of family at the weekend and they were openly joking with their kid (19) sexual innuendo type humour. One comment made was 'his favourite animal is definitely the beaver'.
Multiple type jokes directed his way throughout the evening.

Is this strange?

Sounds really crass. I wouldn't like that humour at any age tbh but definitely not with my adult children.

Yes. Still parent/child relationship though, although all adults, it doesn't change that fact. It's just something I don't feel comfortable with.

While my parents are individuals and have lives outside of just being mum and dad, I don't want to joke about sex with them. My young adult daughters feel the same with me and their dad.

But the relationship can and does change.

Fine if you don't find it comfortable but don't call it inappropriate

It's not the same thing but for us it sort of goes hand in hand. We can laugh and joke about crap sex we've had, but equally she can give me advice about it. It's meant that neither of us are squeamish or embarrassed when talking about any body parts or whatever. We both know that we're both having sex and that we're adults - no need to get all flustered about it IMO.

I have a really open and honest relationship with my mum, and feel like I could talk to her about anything gynaecology related etc without getting flustered in any way, but I’d find her making smutty jokes to me a bit cringeworthy 😳. Mainly because that’s just not her personality, or mine. But we are all different, and I don’t think it’s inappropriate as long as all parties are happy with it!

5128gap · 19/05/2025 12:22

Jokes are fine with adult DC imo provided you don't personalise it either to yourself or them (who wants that mental image?) and the joke is actually funny. So, clever, original, witty, subtle. The beaver comment fails on both counts for me and just sounds like something a dirty old man would come out with. Embarrassing.

That's so lovely to hear that you are able to talk with your mum, it sounds like you have a wonderful relationship. I think it's important to be open about sex and relationships, for advice and guidance.

I don't think that's the same thing as innuendos and joking with your children about sexual activities.

I went to an Ann Summers party with my mum when I was 19! Lots of fun. We play Cards Against Humanity and make all sorts of smutty jokes. My mum's always been very open about sex and relationships though. It's meant that I've felt fully comfortable talking through gynae issues, and because she was open from a young age I was fully prepared for sex. It wasn't some mysterious, enticing thing and I first had it at age 17, after avoiding some very dodgy situations and people. I've learned how to say no effectively and advocate for my own needs with partners. Very thankful for my mum, even if others might say she is 'inappropriate'!

Obviously don’t want to hear the details of my parent’s sex lives but my dad has some cracking dirty jokes 😂My mum never gets any of them so it’s always me and my sister bent over laughing while she sits there going “what? What???”

Bless your mum!!

Also sidenote, I absolutely love your username 😆

It's not the joke.

It's who the joke is happening between. Parents and kids.

But they are adults...

Don't buy cards against humanity OP. Your head will explode!

GlutesthatSalute · 19/05/2025 11:17

A lot of kids would find it humiliating.
Hope that isn't the case.

I see this behaviour in middle class wannabe edgelords sometimes.

HuffleMyPuffle · 19/05/2025 11:13

TheHerboriste · 19/05/2025 01:35

Jesus Christ.

I'd rather have some silly banter and make a few dirty jokes than be a miserable prude who thinks the level of innuendo found in a panto is shocking

373849595d · 19/05/2025 11:11

My parents do this and I despise it. They think it's funny to make innuendos about their own sex life. Any reaction just eggs them on. I find it so pathetic and cringy.

My mother also like to make jokes / comments about me 'accidentally' falling pregnant with another baby. Never mind that in nearly 20 years of being sexually active I've never had an unplanned pregnancy, or that the pregnancies I have had have been high risk and left me with permanent injuries, or that I've explicitly told her it would be unbelievably distressing to me if I did become pregnant again. She still thinks it's funny to comment over and over again about how it could happen.

IsItSnowing · 19/05/2025 10:41

I wouldn't do it but as long as everyone involved is happy with it then that's their business if they're all adults.

Report them immediately!!!!! Imagine a bunch of adults making their own decisions about how to speak to other adults!?!?! Discracefull.

To whom should I report? 😉

Curious to hear other people's thoughts on the subject, even sarcastic ones.

It wouldn’t be for me but I don’t see what’s inappropriate about it.

lljkk · 19/05/2025 10:26

I don't engage with sons like this but exH had a lot of sex innuendo banter with teen DD... they are close friends now and then & both thought it hilarious to see how verbally witty they could skirt close to acceptable boundaries trying to shock the other but just inside boundaries of acceptable relationship. No lewder than what you can hear on Radio 4 entertainment programmes, tbh. Eventually most times she would give in with "Eeewww... Gross." to finish a session.

Yes it’s really good. But if you find a beaver joke between parents and their 19yo inappropriate you’ll be in for a shock if you play with young adults (or my 75 year old mum)

I think your mum would be shocked too if a random stranger off the net played cards against humanity with her!! 😉

No, it will be my sisters and other adults our own ages!!
