To be nervous to buy a house with no immediate neighbours

Hello

we are house hunting and have seen a house that ticks all the boxes other than it is not in a village setting we are used to. My partner thinks it is perfect!
closest neighbour is about 200m down the road. Nearest town is less than 10 mins drive to the centre. There is a big Waitrose 5 mins away. Opposite (these are down a drive) a big golf course and tennis club.

would you be scared having no immediate neighbours?

thank you

200 metres away is nothing

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 15/05/2025 14:20

Sounds ideal.
My direct neighbours are total cocks, I hate them with a passion and wish awful things would happen to them on a daily basis.

mumonthehill · 15/05/2025 14:19

We live like this and it is wonderful! We do have a camera at the front but not motion sensor lights as they get triggered by foxes etc and I did not like that. It feels much safer here than I ever did in a town. I think you do need to get used to other sounds, like the house creaks and that can sound like someone is in it etc, you hear these more as it is so quiet !!i dread the day we ever have to move!!

itbemay1 · 15/05/2025 14:18

I’d LOVE this

jeaux90 · 15/05/2025 14:17

Just buying something similar and I can’t wait! Go for it!

TrustyRusty68 · 15/05/2025 14:16

Sounds perfect!! Get some good security lighting if you’re worried :-)

I wouldn’t like a house completely in the middle of nowhere (also safety concerns as a single woman) but you have a partner? And the nearest neighbour is only 200m away? That doesn’t sound too bad.

Even with a partner there may well be times when OP is home alone, even overnight, especially as dc grow older. OP may arrive home on a wild stormy night in winter to find the house dark and empty (for many very logical and genuine reasons).

It wouldn't bother some people. It would scare the living daylights out of others. If you've got an overactive imagination, don't do it.

Also what about your dc? Will you be happy with them walking home alone in the dark in their teens? Or are you and dp committed to years and years of dropping off and pucking up?

boredoflaundry · 15/05/2025 14:14

How often do you hear alarms going off in towns and NO ONE does anything about it?
… I think you’ll be fine. I live somewhere similar.
just keep an eye out when people appear, greet them, and don’t let anyone use your garden like a country park!

mummybear35 · 15/05/2025 14:12

Absolutely perfect! We live in the middle of nowhere…no mains gas, no mains sewage, no street lights, no bus service, no pavements! Surrounded by woods and fields, at night there’s no light pollution and no traffic sounds. Closest village shop is a 10min drive, closest supermarket probably about 15-20min drive and closest main line train station is a 30min drive to a big town..LOVE IT! We get our groceries delivered, lots of online and Amazon deliveries…what’s not to love??It’s not something I own up to but lockdown was lovely out here!

No neighbours?
Sounds perfect to me! 🙂

My thinking is the same. Perfect! As long as traffic to and from the golf and tennis clubs isn't noisy at evenings and weekends and sound doesn't travel to an intrusive extent from events held in the clubhouses then it sounds good.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 15/05/2025 14:11

Perfect, dream home. Though I adore my neighbours!

Cherrysoup · 15/05/2025 14:11

Sounds ideal and is what we’ll be looking for next year, hopefully neighbours won’t be that close.

CheFaro · 15/05/2025 14:10

Honestly, if you’re this worried about it now, it’s probably not for you,

Mum2HC · 15/05/2025 14:08

DrPrunesqualer · 15/05/2025 14:06

Its not like you are in the middle of nowhere OP
You have a supermarket 5 minutes away, a town 10 minutes to the centre and a bus stop practically on your doorstep

If anything given all of the above I’d be worried the land around you will be developed for new housing, it sounds like a prime spot

Yes it’s deffo not in the middle of nowhere! This will be the closest to town we have ever been. The fields around are a greenbelt, does that give any protection for future building?

Sounds like my idea of heaven

romany4 · 15/05/2025 14:08

Absolute dream for me.

As someone who's got a neighbour who has had screeching pool parties and music pumping loudly every single day we've had this sunny weather, I'm dreaming of silence!

Todaywasbetter · 15/05/2025 14:07

go there on a saturday night when the clubs are full.

Oystersandchampagne · 15/05/2025 14:04

I am a people’s person so would feel quite isolated, particularly in the evening when it’s dark . I was brought up in a huge 400 year old detached cottage and as a teenager I hated being in the house on my own .I do have a very wild imagination 😂

DrPrunesqualer · 15/05/2025 14:02

No neighbours is wonderful and @Newhomeandgarden on another thread that doesn’t like their neighbours using their garden should have perhaps chosen the same. 🤣🤣
Perhaps Newhome can swap with yours

Peace and quiet OP, lovely!

Sorry for everyone asking I don’t feel right sending a link as think we’re going to put an offer in!! If we don’t I will of course send the link

OP posts:
Glitchymn1 · 15/05/2025 13:57

Link? It sounds like bliss, I’ll have it if you don’t want it 🤣
Neighbour wise 200 metres is fine, also it’s unlikely anyone will save you in an emergency. They’d be too busy saving their own skin! or just watching or on holiday - anything. Crunchy driveway, cameras, cctv, baseball bat under the bed just kidding.

Mum2HC · 15/05/2025 13:57

funinthesun19 · 15/05/2025 13:49

It’s a dream for me, but in all honesty it would take some getting used to and I would have the same worries as you.
As someone who lives in a terraced house with neighbours everywhere, suddenly being on my own (especially at night), would be creepy. But of course wonderful! I’d soon get used to it, but I’d have one eye open at night until then!

Haha yes Im hoping I will get used to it or if not we can renovate and sell it in a few years!

Mum2HC · 15/05/2025 13:55

There is a bus stop about 25m away which has buses every hour to the nearest town. I think it’s because of the tennis/golf club which is v popular. So once our kids are older they could use this?

OP posts:
BangFlash · 15/05/2025 13:55

I would do it but I share your concern. We have a pleasant chat-in-passing relationship with our neighbours rather than being friends. However they can be useful - taking in parcels, feeding the cat, helping to rescue husband from a tree!- and it means you have immediate help if needed and extra security.

I think I’d need a dog to feel safe.
