To be curious about how many times women have been proposed to or engaged?

I find it so interesting hearing about women’s past experiences, especially when it comes to proposals or engagements. Some people are only proposed to once, while others have different stories.

How many times has it happened for you and what’s the story behind it?

Like Super scientist said, the marriage was mostly to save on paperwork

catgirl1976 · 15/05/2025 13:51

4 engagements / proposals
2 marriages

RNApolymerase · 15/05/2025 13:51

None. I am married but that was my suggestion.

Superscientist · 15/05/2025 13:49

Depends on your definition I guess technically I've been proposed too as we have a civil partnership but it was more of a we wouldn't have to keep doing this paperwork if we had a civil partnership, is it time we just did it?
8 weeks later we were "married"

Walker1178 · 15/05/2025 13:45

Technically twice by current DP but I don’t think either time really counts…

1 - Sat on the sofa watching rubbish on tv. DP ‘Let’s get married’ Me ‘Er, let’s not!’ No ring, no planning. Initially assumed he was just joking, apparently he wasnt

2 - Both my sisters and my niece got engaged within a couple of months of each other. We’re stood in the kitchen after finding out about the 3rd and DP says ‘Do you think we should do it now?’ Another no from me.

I absolutely can see us getting engaged/married one day but we’re both 40ish, been together nearly 5 yrs, no plans for any DC together (I have 1 DS not at home) so I don’t see any rush, we’re happy as we are and have so many other things to spend our money on

Engaged 4 times, married 3 times. Soon to be divorced for 3rd time.
1st marriage 1 year. Abusive
2nd marriage 11 years but only together for 7 years. Mentally abusive cheater
3rd marriage 25 years apart properly the last 4. Narcissist & cheater.

CarrieLite · 15/05/2025 13:22

1 proposal, 1 engagement, married for 26 years.

Freshstartyear25 · 15/05/2025 13:22

Once. Still happily married to him.

SilenceInside · 15/05/2025 13:19

None. No proposals, no engagements and no marriages.

Doggymummar · 15/05/2025 13:14

I've been married three times, and turned down two proposals

StMarie4me · 15/05/2025 13:13

What a strange thing to be curious about

charabang · 15/05/2025 13:07

Three engagements - two marriages. Ironically the one I didn't marry is probably the one should have married. Cest la vie! I'm now twice divorced.

SnowflakeSmasher86 · 15/05/2025 12:49

Proposals 0.5!
Engaged 0
Married 1

XH didn’t propose, we talked about marriage and said we’d both like to. He said he’d find a nice time to ‘propose properly’ then every time we went on holiday or on a trip I’d be thinking “this is it!” But it never was. (I say never, it was only about 6 months Grin ). So I ran out of patience waiting and said I don’t need a ring, let’s just book the wedding. So we did!

Married about 12 years and divorced with 3 young DCs.

Met XP and was with him (on and off) for 10 years. One night he did propose jn bed, he knelt down by the bed, got a ring I already owned from my drawer and put it on for me. It was perfect.

The next day he told friends at work that he’d proposed and that he’d bought the ring especially/planned it etc. When I questioned why he’d lied he said he didn’t want them to think it was a rubbish proposal. So essentially he wanted them to have a ‘better’ engagement story than me! We had so many issues anyway, and he would say “why would I want to marry THAT?!” during arguments, so luckily we never got round to marrying.

Current DP has been married twice and is keen to marry again. He’s essentially Ross Geller Grin His proposal story from his last marriage was so beautiful and now he’s under pressure to make the next one just as perfect!

The numbers on this thread are pretty boring. What is fascinating though and what I wish the thread was about is the stories from those who have turned down proposals.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 15/05/2025 12:44

None. Never been asked. Never been engaged or married.

Jollyhockeystickss · 15/05/2025 12:43

I've had 12 marriage proposals( most drunken) and I never wanted to get married so I didn't and I'm still single, marriage to me is about being shackled and it's not for me, maybe men feel women want to be asked,

nutbrownhare15 · 15/05/2025 12:37

We just talked to each other and decided to get married. So technically engaged for 18 months. I didn't want to be proposed to because for me it takes the agency away from the woman in heterosexual relationships. Yes she gets to say yes or no but he decides on the timing. Which means for many women the timing doesn't work for them- many post about it on mumsnet. I think the idea is a surprise is romantic and shows the ardency of his affection but I don't want to live my life in limbo waiting for a proposal that may never happen.

ItGhoul · 15/05/2025 12:34

Proposed to three times. Said no all three times.

GlutesthatSalute · 15/05/2025 12:33

Four proposals. Two engagements. One I gave back the ring as realised 21 was too young and I didn't know him (thank god thank god... he went to jail 10 years later for fraud), second fella it felt right and we have been married 18 years so far.

I was pretty nice looking when I was 20 in fairness and also was quite a sweet, lighthearted lass then. The proposals wouldn't rain in if I went back on the meat market now LOL

DramaAlpaca · 15/05/2025 12:32

One proposal, one engagement, one marriage

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 15/05/2025 12:30

Twice, if you count an attempt by a member of my community to. arrange a marriage between me and her similarly aged son when I was doing A-levels

TheatreTraveller · 15/05/2025 12:23

5 proposals
3 engagements
2 marriages
1 divorce

Very happily married with our 2 young children now.

Hoppymclimpy · 15/05/2025 12:21

3 engagements
2 marriages
2 divorces
Now very very happy with DP of 5 years (I think!). We don't live together as yet as both of us have teenagers who are our priority but once everyone is an adult we'll co-habit without any hint of marriage!

TheCurious0range · 15/05/2025 12:10

Only one that I consider an actual proposal, from my now husband.

There was also a desperate proposal from my boyfriend when I was going off to uni and he didn't want me to leave because his previous girlfriend had gone to uni and left him behind. I didn't even respond, but I did end the relationship. Thus reinforcing his belief that girls who go to uni think they are better than boys who don't 😂 . I used to have a thing for brooding tortured musicians (aimless indie/emo boys), who I thought needed saving. I grew out of it thankfully!

CheFaro · 15/05/2025 12:03

CurlewKate · 15/05/2025 12:00

I must have been proposed to about 20 times over 40 years-by the same man. He knows I’ll say no-and we just carry on with our very happy lives together. He would be shaken to the core if one day I said yes!

This made me smile. I eventually said yes, very ungraciously, about 21 years in, because it meant so much to him, and we found ourselves in a practical situation which would be made easier by being married. But a ten-minute ceremony with two witnesses didn’t change anything at all about our relationship. Still good.
