I'm shocked and appalled!! He (M41)says he doesn't want her (DD12) learning about people who marry there daughters off at 9 years old and all their women are oppressed and forced to cover up and do as their told!

I feel like he's taring all Muslims with the same brush and it's good to learn about other religions and see other places of worship!

I'm so mad!! I honestly don't think I can stay with someone who has these opinions!!

Btw. This shouldn’t be a competition over which religion fosters the worst behaviour.

We just need to be able to talk about the bad behaviour without being accused of being racist or Islamophobic so we can be clear in the lines of acceptable behaviour.

A lot of assumptions are being made on this thread about what Muslims in general think. It would be really good if there was an environment where we could talk and find out their opinions on the treatment of women by their religion, especially in certain countries and whether they plan to do anything about it.

It often seems like Christian/British/white people are constantly being held to account even for the sins of our forefathers and certainly for the sins of our church leaders - is this just a one way street?

People upping the ante by constantly screaming “racist” at us is not conducive.

Brushedcottonpajamas · 14/05/2025 21:21

Don't you have anything better to do than research the poster of every thread to see how you can catch them out?

No. Clearly not.

I don't do it on every thread. Just the ones that instantly feel a bit click baity to me, which is quite a few these days, admittedly. And I am very, very rarely wrong.

Are you kidding. Have you not seen how Christianity is being weapon used in the USA?

How many people have been murdered for being female, gay or not Christian by bad people in the name of Christianity in the last year?

MrsKeats · 15/05/2025 18:57

So because women are not employed in the most senior positions in the Catholic Church we are not allowed to discuss the impact of another religion on women that uses stoning ti death as legitimate punishment in some parts of the world?

You think all Muslims think this is ok? That’s extremism and has nothing do at all with visting a mosque. As others have said what about all the child abuse scandals in the Catholic Church? Does that tar all catholics with that brush?

I think it's a genuine point for debate. In all world religions there are those who use their faith in a positive way, as a moral compass, to being order to their life and beliefs etc and have a like minded community. Then there are those who abuse their position in an organised religion to abuse others.

It's not unique. Just look at the Magdalene laundries as a similar example. Most Catholics are horrified by this.

Most Muslim people I know would be horrified at the thought of stoning women etc.

Stompythedinosaur · 15/05/2025 17:34

Yeah, I couldn't stay in a relationship with a racist either. I'm sorry, it must be really difficult.

You have literally just dismissed an entire religion of people as ' dangerous'. I think that's a little worse than rude.

Is it fair to say that something that is used to harm people by bad people could be described as dangerous though?

Kitchen knives can be very dangerous when used by bad people. When used to chop vegetables they are not really dangerous at all.

I'm not sure what's more depressing. Your husband's attitude or that a 3rd of voters so far agree with him

Agree. Really sad. I've deleted Facebook because my community boards for my local town have basically shown that the majority on there are awful racists. They love Reform. We didn't actually have a vote a couple of weeks but they're all bleating on how pleased they are at Farage and his cronies have got a little bit of power.

It's made me really sad because it felt like it was getting better but from what I've seen its getting worse.

There was peaceful rally locally supporting immigration and some awful people showed up, threw bricks and bikes at a hotel that some refugees were staying in. One or two got arrested after a police officer for hit with something. People online went absolutely mad that these "poor young men" had been punished for being violent thugs.

This is a regular accusation to anyone that criticises the bad aspects of Islam.

The part you’ve ignored is that you haven’t got any examples of millions of Christians weaponising bible passages in order to kill people in large numbers or subjugate women in the present day. The bad examples of Christianity seem to involve obscure sects in America that no one has heard of and we are already rightly critical of them.

While I’m sure everyone agrees that the majority of Muslims are moderate or would like to be moderate, we should be allowed to recognise that there are still millions of people who actively practise or live by the really bad aspects of Islam - the throwing gay men off tall buildings, the stoning to death of raped adulterous women, the marrying girls from age 9. In countries like Afghanistan where Islamic leaders are in charge, they recently changed the law to drop the age of marriage to 9. As well as depriving girls of education and healthcare.

We should also be allowed to criticise that freely just we like heavily criticise the Catholic and Christian Churches for their sex abuse scandals. It doesn’t mean we are criticising all Muslims or the moderate practices. In fact it would be helpful to agree what are the ‘moderate practises’ acceptable in a tolerant society.

Afaik Muslims don’t get a democratic vote on their leadership so what stops extremist leaders taking over and changing things like they have done in several formerly modern and tolerant societies around the world? Has everyone seen the pictures showing how free Iranian women were before the extremists took over?

And remember that there are some Muslims in this country that are not moderate. MI5 say that 75% of their work is trying to stop Islamic extremists from mass murder of us. The stated aim of the extremists is to kill us or force us to covert.

There are areas where many Muslims live where the women have to wear full body and face covering. Teachers have to be trained to spot the signs where a girl is going to be trafficked abroad for forced marriage.

We tolerate a huge breach of our animal cruelty regulations s to allow halal slaughter and some areas like Wales halal meat is the only meat supplied in schools.

Afaik the Muslim Council of Britain have not taken any action to push or help the government to stop the Muslim grooming gangs. Is that because as ex Muslim campaigner Raja Miah tells us, a Muslims first responsibility is to other Muslims? I have no issue with that in itself but we have to be able to discuss whether that works for everyone in UK society. In some cases, like the tens (maybe hundreds) of thousands of raped and abused girls hurt by the grooming gangs because they are white girls, it doesn’t work.

Let’s try and have a productive conversation about this without the automatic shouts of ‘racist’ and ‘Islamophobe’.

Great post 👏👏

Funny how people cherry pick the bible, the fact that catholic priests have been abusing children for eons is ignored. Evangelical Christians also marry off their daughters to old men etc

But it's only bad when a select group (same as the above, not all, select groups/factions) they don't like do it, ohhh it's oh so much worse.

Most Muslims are moderate. Same as Christians. It's a shame many can't see that.

It's not a religion. I suggest you go away and do your research, then come back and see if you still feel the same.

Chiseltip · 15/05/2025 16:27

Are they visiting any other religious places like Catholic Churches, Synagogues?

If not, perhaps your DH is just suspicious of the motives behind this visit.

I have to be honest, I agree to some degree. BUT some of the women dress that way because they want to. I had a Muslim friend and she no longer wanted to be Muslim. Her mum was the one pushing her to wear a burka instead of a hijab. Her father did not care either way. She was outcast from the family by her mother, not her father, and only her mother was the one who insulted her.

The part i agree with is not going but not for the same reasons. In this country, we are now learning less about Christianity and more about Islam. The school my son attends did nothing to celebrate Easter, but came home with an Eid gift. How is that Equality? Why are we wiping out English culture by allowing this? This is the bigger, and more worrying picture here.

Miri13 · 15/05/2025 16:14

Your husband sounds like a nightmare. I’d let her go regardless of what he’s saying. Knowledge is power and it’s important that children learn about other cultures and religions.

Does she need his permission? You have parental authority too: can't you just sign the permission slip yourself? It might be helpful for her to hear a counter narrative to his nonsense.

Also, I couldn't tolerate that level of prejudice in a partner, or that level of stupidity. I'd be sending him every article about Christian underage marriage that I could get my hand on. Look at America.

love! Low IQ socialists is a new one. I didn’t know mumsnet came with an IQ test, I haven’t done mine yet. It’s about empathy and understanding and not everything being black and white.

It changes. I'm not far right, you're far right. You're the far left. You're fascists (once had to school someone on why the left wing couldn't be fascists), language doesn't mean anything anymore (I'm not far right/racist), it's just an opinion (racism), you're stoopid! And so it goes on.
