DH won't let daughter go on school trip to mosque

I'm shocked and appalled!! He (M41)says he doesn't want her (DD12) learning about people who marry there daughters off at 9 years old and all their women are oppressed and forced to cover up and do as their told!

I feel like he's taring all Muslims with the same brush and it's good to learn about other religions and see other places of worship!

I'm so mad!! I honestly don't think I can stay with someone who has these opinions!!

Your DH is right to be concerned with any culture or religion where practices are oppressive for woman.

However as you said not every Muslim does the same and actually it’s beneficial to learn about Islam and then to have further education into some belief and oppression and help people make informed choices in adulthood to protect themselves .

Its lack of education that leads to oppression - it’s why there’s fights to get woman educated in some parts do the world.

He is advocating oppressing your child’s education - that doesn’t protect her - it leaves her vulnerable.

Your 'D'H should watch the current series of UK Taskmaster. Fatiha El-Ghorri doesn't strike me as someone who has ever done anything she's been told, ever, yet dresses traditionally. It's quite clearly by choice.

Also, just to be clear, your husband is a racist twat.

A mosque that is willing to open it's doors to a school tour is a great asset. I really hope your daughter ends up going.

Did you come onto MN especially to post about this OP, or did you just feel the need for a name change for this thread?

It's funny but I seem to be developing an uncanny sixth sense for knowing when a particular thread is going to be the only one under that user name.

Most people would be deeply ashamed of having such a racist partner. I presume that the OP name changed.

Poppy123xyz · 14/05/2025 20:33

I was once curious to see what they are like, one near me had an open day. But they wanted gender segregation. I walked away.

WomenInSTEM · 14/05/2025 20:32

Tell him about Christian sects where old men marry multiple young, teenage brides.

Emonade · 14/05/2025 20:27

Yes you visit all places of worship in year 9

Great! Church, Synagogue, Mosque, temple(s) etc.
Should put them off religion for life.

I have changed username for this. I have posted previously a few years ago but mainly just read others posts. I just feel alone and wanted to rant, seemed like a good place to do that.

He's correct about Islam but your daughter should go anyway to see what it's like in person. It will be an education. She'll notice the sex segregation and, if it's like many mosques, most likely that the men's area is larger and nicer than the women's area.

Edited

He isn't correct about Islam.

I pity you for being so ignorant.

UndermyShoeJoe · 14/05/2025 20:29

I’ve two in secondary school and neither have been taken at any point to any places of worship so I’ve no idea where those adamant that all secondary schoolers would be visiting churches and such.

Your dh’s attitude is bad though.

MiloMinderbinder925 · 14/05/2025 20:29

Gosh. What are the chances of that?

And just to be clear, inner London comprehensive schools with very diverse communities, not some posh school with very few Muslim children

no Muslims opted out

Does he think all Christians are paedophiles? As there’s been loads in USA uncovered lately. Or that all Christians are KKK?
Is this born of ignorance (as in he needs to learn) or pure racism? Can you educate him?

I swear people haven’t read the bible. There’s all sorts in there. The Old Testament is eye-watering.

I think all organised religion is bobbins but I still want DD to know about them all and respect the PEOPLE (not the religion) as long as they are being respectful. Lots of religion, from Islam, through Buddhism, to Christianity has been used to control women and abuse children. Anything that gives men supreme power is a bad idea. But at 12 she can do some critical thinking.

Schoolchoicesucks · 14/05/2025 20:27

I don't understand how you have been together for 20 years and not encountered his views before.

Emonade · 14/05/2025 20:27

HellsBalls · 14/05/2025 20:23

Are the Muslim children getting a reciprocal visit to a church?

Yes you visit all places of worship in year 9

Dvdlove · 14/05/2025 20:27

What is it you're so appalled by?

I work with you Muslim women. They don't consider themselves oppressed but they absolutely do believe that to be good Muslims they need to cover up and do exactly what their father, brothers and husbands tell them. I don't know if that's general.teaxhing of theory men have done a number on them, but I meet a lot who share this belief and have no agency of their own. They are oppressed.

Lavender14 · 14/05/2025 20:27

Honestly I'd suggest he goes with her. He might learn a few things. Except then the people in the mosque would have to experience him

LaurieFairyCake · 14/05/2025 20:26

Yes of course all the Muslim students go on trips to churches as part of the GCSE curriculum for RE

my dh was an RE teacher for 25 years, not one Muslim student was opted out like the OPs kids dad wants to

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 14/05/2025 20:26

I'd be asking him to move out due to concerns about my dc being exposed to racist and islamophobic views in the home. Or else I'd be going and taking any dc with me.

Who would want to stay with a twat like they anyway?! Have there really been no signs of this in the 20 years that you've been with him? Has he been radicalised online or something?

StupidBoy · 14/05/2025 20:26

I'd be interested to know from teachers how many of their Muslim pupils are barred from going into churches or sikh temples or other places of worship by their parents.

No3392 · 14/05/2025 20:25

I couldn't be with a racist.

And I wouldn't want my children around one either.

Make sure your daughter goes.

BethDuttonYeHaw · 14/05/2025 20:25

He’s a real bigot and your daughter needs these trips to make sure his prejudices is countered by education

Trallia · 14/05/2025 20:24

Can you suggest he volunteers as a parent helper on the school trip to address his evident ignorance?
