To ask where the good kids TV is?

I have a 4 year old and a 7 year old. Screen time is limited, but even then I struggle to find much that I'm happy for them to watch. I feel like kids TV used to be so much better when I was little!

I'd love to find some shows that are entertaining but also educational - things like Horrible Histories and Operation Ouch. Or shows with genuinely engaging storytelling. What are your kids are engaged by?

Perhaps I'm just not finding the good stuff, but AIBU to think kids TV has gone majorly downhill?

@devongusscott christ that's abysmal.

hydriotaphia · 03/09/2025 12:43

@devongusscott yikes I am guessing your animations and songs are just as AI generated as your post. Sorry, but this is what most of us are trying to avoid for our kids.

Carrotsurprise · 03/09/2025 12:21

My 6 year old is really into Maddie + Triggs at the moment. It's a simple show with short episodes but it's so well made, the songs are all bangers.

I agree it's gone downhill. I noticed that when they switched to mainly computer animation in the early 2000s that the quality of the shows went really downhill.

I have mainly just had my kids watch older shows. There are a lot available by streaming - Postman Pat (the older ones) Sesame Street, etc.

One you might try that's not as well known for really young kids is Nanalan', on Youtube.

I've tried to get them into The Muppets, but they weren't as enthusiastic about it as I was (still am!). Devastated!

Generally agree with you that kids TV now is mostly utter rubbish. Especially on YouTube.

The sheer volume of content is overwhelming!

My 4yo watches -

Daniel Tigers Neighbourhood (Netflix) is really good. It’s not over stimulating and deals with emotions, friendships, or practical things like hand washing and road safety

Anyrhing Julia Donaldson on iPlayer

Numberblocks

Mr Bean (cartoon version) think it’s on iPlayer and episodes are only around 10mins long

Whyx · 14/05/2025 21:37

Ada twist
Storybots
Octonauts
Alpha blocks
Number blocks
Magic school bus

Maddie's do you know is a great series for real world knowledge, she has a space one, plants, around the house etc. Grace/Katy's amazing machines also good.

We have also shown them old-school shows like Number time
Scrapheap challenge
Robot Wars
Planet Earth
Where's Wally

The Simpsons is usually a hit as it's a cartoon so they will just watch it. And Shaun the Sheep is pretty good. Much better than Timmy Time!

Cyclistmumgrandma · 14/05/2025 21:27

Just introduced 2.5 year old granddaughter to Camberwick Green, Trumpton and Chigley (made in the '60's. She's loving it.

Girasoli · 14/05/2025 21:27

For the 4 year old...any of the Andy adventures (Dinosaur, Animal etc)

Girasoli · 14/05/2025 21:25

More for the 7 year old than the 4 year old but me and my 9 year old both enjoy Inbestigators and Little lunch on Netflix - both Australian TV shows with 10 year olds as the main characters.

I haven't seen it in ages but DS1 (who still loves maths) used to love Blaze and the monster machines.

TooFancyNancy · 14/05/2025 21:23

CBeebies pantos (most are on iPlayer. Eg; Peter Pan, Alice in wonderland, thumbelina, beauty and the beast etc)

the Julia Donaldson stories on iPlayer (gruffalo, Zog, highway rat etc)

musical story land (bbc philharmonic) again on iPlayer. (Jack and the beanstalk, story of the Chinese zodiac, the gingerbread man etc)

*the above mainly aimed toward the 4 year old but I do have a 7 year old who will sit and watch them whilst there on as they are well done.

ds7 loves walking with dinosaurs, horrible histories, and like pp mentioned he absolutely loves the old mr bean episodes (hates the cartoon version!)

fox919 · 14/05/2025 21:12

Bluey is amazing and I will happily watch it by myself ❤️

Baboutheocelot · 14/05/2025 21:09

Storybots is a good one

CBeebies. For instance "Lola and Charlie"

CurbsideProphet · 14/05/2025 20:57

We have set parental control over content on YouTube Kids so our 2.5 year old can only watch Gecko's Garage and Numberblocks on there. Gecko's Garage is a mix of songs and also visits to interesting people / places eg. a lifeboat crew, a bus garage, fire station, steam railway.

wehavea2319 · 14/05/2025 20:55

Was kids tv actually better though? i noticed Button Moon was on Amazon prime and excitedly put it on, was shocked at how terrible it is 😅 nothing like I remembered!

GiveDogBone · 14/05/2025 20:51

Horrible Histories, etc are all on iPlayer. I also have a soft rule where we always watch some nature programmes from time to time, plenty of “life at the zoo” and David Attenborough programmes on the five major channels free streaming services.

ProcrastinatorsAnonymous · 14/05/2025 17:53

Such good suggestions here - and lots I haven't heard of. Thank you!

I think part of the problem is there's SO MUCH out there now, it's hard to sort through and know what's worth their time... This is a very useful list.

Ada Twist Scientist is lovely!
Older but my kids loved Doc McStuffins (I had some DVDs lol but you can probably find it somewhere more useful)

SquigglePigs · 14/05/2025 13:55

Octonauts is fab (Netflix).

Maddie on BBC is great. She does things about machines, space, animals, and the home.

My 6yr old loves My World Kitchen and What's Cooking Omari on BBC. It's got her really interested in helping me in the kitchen and trying new things.

Ranger Hamza's Eco Quest is pretty decent too.

Olga da Polga is cute and one if the less annoying kids shows.

And Bluey of course!

Go Jetters is a bit more annoying but is a great intro to different places around the world. Especially for the 4 yr old.

PercyFredGeorge · 14/05/2025 12:14

Mine have loved Octonauts - which is educational.

PurpleThistle7 · 14/05/2025 12:14

My kids loved Octonauts at that stage and will still watch One Zoo Three or whatever it's called. We also like some family competition shows - Is it Cake and things like that.

Though now they're a bit older it's Teen Titans on repeat.

Whiteflowerscreed · 14/05/2025 12:12

My 4 yo loves Andy’s dinosaur adventures or Graces Amazing machines. He also has learnt a lot from the Maddy programmes where they find out about how different household objects work or are built in factories or how jam is made or space rockets fly.

all player programmes

Where's the good kids' TV? Back in the 1980s.

1970s too.
