To think that a 35 year old man setting his dating range to age 21+ is revolting?

DP friend is in the process of getting divorced. He is actively on the apps, as he hasn’t had sex with his ex wife for 5 years, is pretty desperate. My partner advised him to set his age range from 21 “if all you want is a shag”, and down to 26+ for a relationship.

AIBU to find this gross? 21 year old girls will think a 35 year old man is ancient, no? He seems to think that that’s an acceptable age gap. For context I’m 37.

I'm 47, that would put me at 30.5. My DP is 29, but he's a doctor and as much of an adult as we ever get to be, so it'd be a shame to kick him out on this basis😅

Sorry way too young for you 😂

Thats ridiculous. I met my DH at 25 and he was 38 so really i should have been 26. But if he was 39 then I would have had to be 26.5. How does that make any sense at all!!

There should be no law for this, or certainly not if someone is over 18. I do agree under 18 though.

I don't think Oona was being serious.

The half your age + 7 years is a metric that's been around for ages. From AI:

The dating rule "half your age plus seven" is often attributed to French author Max O'Rell (Léon Paul Blouet) in his 1901 book, Her Royal Highness Woman. In the book, he stated that a man should marry a woman half his age plus seven, which was meant to be an ideal age for a bride.

Yeah I have just seen their 2nd response. On MN people quote the half plus 7 as a minimum age however in fact its an optimum (as well as being a load of nonsense)

You would have had to wait until he was 40 and you were 27.

I am assuming you are joking!

The law should be half your age plus seven. And in reverse, your age minus seven and then doubled.

The law is an ass, but thankfully, not usually THAT much of an ass.

I don't see a problem? I don't get how it concerns you.

Look at the videos of Andrew Tate etc talking about young women and see why its problematic

I didn't say it wasn't problematic. I said that at 21 women have agency to make choices. I had my heart broken by a much older man at 24 and the fact he was older and financially stable definitely played a part in how easily he swept me off my feet. I dusted myself down and carried on, ended up meeting my husband a few years later.

The lines where it's unacceptable are when one party really isn't aware of what they are getting into.

MrsSunshine2b · 28/05/2025 01:29

Some are vulnerable, some aren't- just like some 30 yo women and men.

At 21, you are able to make a decision about who you want a relationship with.

ArtTheClown · 28/05/2025 08:32

The point is that there is no clear start to ‘adulthood’. 18 is just an arbitrary figure.

I'd say physical maturity plus a few years is already a generous interpretation.
Im not saying a 20 year old brain is the same as a 50 year old brain, as these change through our whole lives. But both are the brains of adults.

When I was at uni I lived in a block where there was about 20 young women. The vast majority were virgins when they started uni (and I was shocked to find that a fair few had never even been to a club). When we graduated at 21, I would say that more than half still hadn’t slept with anyone or had a serious relationship. SOME young women may be sexual instigators and worldly in their knowledge of men, but I don’t think it’s the majority by any stretch of the imagination. At least it wasn’t when I was at uni in the 2000s

Where on earth did you go to University? I went to University in 2007 and was easily the least "worldly" student in my block by a country mile. I can say with 99% certainty (those walls were thin!) that by the end of Freshers year there wasn't a virgin, male or female, in the block.

MrsSunshine2b · 28/05/2025 01:29

MidnightMeltdown · 28/05/2025 00:22

Again, I’m not saying that they can’t make rational choices, I’m saying that they are more vulnerable to being exploited. The only reason that men in their 30s want to date much younger women is because it gives them more power and control.

You know that the idea that the brain "reaches maturity" at 25/30 or whatever is absolute bollocks, right?

According to who? You?

MidnightMeltdown · 28/05/2025 00:29

Youstolemygoddamnhouse · 18/05/2025 14:54

Where’s your evidence? Just because you say that doesn’t means it’s fact 😂 plenty of 30 year olds have shit lives and make bad decisions. I don’t care what you think. You are also wrong

I don’t care what you think either!

Let me guess, you’re dating someone with a massive age gap 😂

MidnightMeltdown · 28/05/2025 00:26

ArtTheClown · 18/05/2025 12:36

The brain is immature at 14, and at 21.

Comparing a 21 year old adult's maturity level to that of a 14 year old child is insulting, ridiculous and just wrong.

And I see we've stretched the goalposts for child even further, from 25 to 30 😂

No more insulting than comparing the maturity of a 35 year old to that of a 21 year old.

The point is that there is no clear start to ‘adulthood’. 18 is just an arbitrary figure.

People don't become 'adults' until their 30s, say scientists

Experts say people aged 18 are still going through changes in the brain that can affect behaviour.

MrsSunshine2b · 18/05/2025 12:05

That's bad science.

The research that was done analysed the brains of young people and found that their brains continued developing into adulthood.

The study was then stopped at 26, so they never found out if the brain is EVER "fully developed."

A 21 year old might still make more bad/impulsive decisions than a 30 yo, but pretending that they aren't perfectly capable of making rational choices for their life is really disrespectful to them.

Again, I’m not saying that they can’t make rational choices, I’m saying that they are more vulnerable to being exploited. The only reason that men in their 30s want to date much younger women is because it gives them more power and control.

MidnightMeltdown · 28/05/2025 00:20

Where did I say that no-one under 30 should be employed with responsibility? Weird post!

I also didn’t says that a 21 year old can’t be trusted to have sex with who they want. I said that they are more vulnerable to exploitation by older makes. I’ve seen it happen countless times.

Arina22 · 19/05/2025 13:43

I don't think maturity depends on age. It depends on personality and also life experiences.

I know a 40 year old man who has never left home, never worked. He gets his mum to do everything. His father wasn't around for him at all, so i think that made him have less self confidence in himself, and become more dependant on his mum.

Then, I know a 26 year old who is a manager and is very mature.

He had a loving father and mother, which gave him more confidence in life

Emonade · 19/05/2025 11:54

Vplop · 18/05/2025 21:19

Young women are infantilised by society and treated as if they are not capable of making decisions for themselves. Women are seen as passive during sexual encounters with men, rather than enthusiastic participants or even instigators. Women, especially young women are sexual beings who know what they want and what they are doing. Sure, we make mistakes but that’s life.

I have been a teenager and in my twenties before. People who think that their daughters are innocent virgin flowers are very much mistaken.

Edited

You are painting all women with the same brush.

ArtTheClown · 19/05/2025 10:29

I wonder if the same people arguing that 21 year-olds are fully fledged adults say the same about young adults who want to modify their bodies. She's 21, if she wants to hack her breasts off and fashion a penis put of her arm, she can!.. right?

I don't think any doctor should be allowing any person to unnecesarily mutilate their body, no. It's unethical.

The amount of people who identify as trans is hugely worrying and something is very wrong in society that we pander to this ideology
but wether you like it or not a 21 year old is an adult and has the same rights and privileges as any adult
I would hope any adult who wanted extreme surgery to become their desired Gender, would have to go a long period of counselling and adjustments, such as living as a " male" / "female" ,before they would be considered for such surgery
