To buy a dream house with a crazy neighbour next door?

Would you buy the house of your dreams if there was an ongoing issue with the neighbour? The house is in the cotswolds, lovely garden in a beautiful area with great community, schools and shops. The only issue is that the house apparently has a neighbour that has harassed the owners in the past, instances like putting up notices around their property boundary about “around the clock 24hr surveillance” and “trespassers will be prosecuted” I’ve heard the neighbour also seems to think the owners are Russian spies and working with Putin. Would this be enough to put you off buying an otherwise lovely home?

Don’t do it, we have nightmare neighbours that make our life hell. They cause me stress several times a day every single day. It has totally changed the feel and vibe of our home. Do yourself a favour and find another house

DaisyDukesAuntie · 13/05/2025 21:25

No way would I knowingly put myself in this position. I moved from my previous house, which I absolutely loved, because of a neighbour…..my advice, don’t do it

MookieCat · 13/05/2025 21:24

Our crazy neighbour is in his 80s and been like this for a good 18 years. His hobby is a martial art that he wins prizes at still plus cycles everywhere. I think in our case waiting it out will not end well for me. Grin

Its not the house of your dreams if you have nightmare neighbours living next door!

HunnyPot · 13/05/2025 21:23

I’d only consider it if you are planning to out crazy them or bully them to the point they can’t take it anymore.

How old is the neighbour? Likely to fall off the perch soon? Or maybe just to be committed to a psychiatric unit, regardless of age? Is the vendor likely actually to be engaged in nefarious activities?

My thoughts exactly. How long is the neighbour likely to stay there?

Is this house in the south Cotswolds… in a village beginning with M? This reads a lot like social media posts I’ve seen about a nuisance neighbour who behaves very similarly. If my rather cryptic description sounds correct, I would definitely not consider moving there

WilfredsPies · 13/05/2025 21:14

Nope. I’ve got loud shouty screamy neighbours. I’ve got neighbours who play really crap music really loudly. I’ve got neighbours who fill the air with the smell of weed and I’ve got neighbours who do all of that stuff at the same time. And I’d still rather live in the vicinity of a million more of them than live above our current next door neighbour, who is absolutely insane.

A house you love even more will come along, but there’s no point looking for trouble. The neighbour will steal any enjoyment you get from living there and you’ll get to the point where you just don’t want to go home.

FinneganFois · 13/05/2025 21:13

Well. you could buy your second favourite house, and the owner may not tell you about a nightmare neighbour. I know they are legally obliged, but with this house the owner has been honest. Do you think there may be another reason for this, as in divorce/separation and one partner does not want to move, so they could be exaggerating how bad the neighbour is.

What à terrible thing to say, why would anyone think that's a good idea.

That poster has clearly never lived next door to truly awful or antisocial neighbours (or perhaps is the awful neighbour themself).

OP - bad neighbours can really impact your life and health. I wouldn't willingly put myself in that position.

ChicaWowWow · 13/05/2025 21:13

Hell fucking no! I couldn't not be arsed with this kind of nonsense and stress. Hard pass.

Catsandcannedbeans · 13/05/2025 21:13

Probably, if it’s at a good price, but only because whatever they are I can be worse.

In all seriousness, it really depends. It depends on you, and also what kind of “crazy” this person is. At the end of the day one thing to factor in is how much of a threat they physically are to you. A 6ft man isn’t the same as a little old lady. Also… bad as it seems… how old is this person? If they’re gonna be shuffling off the mortal coil in the next few years… do you think you could wait them out?

DwayneTheRockJohnson · 13/05/2025 21:12

They’ll be another perfect house with nicer neighbours. I’d give this one a miss if I were you.

Feeling safe is the most important thing about a home. Do not compromise on this.

100% this ^^

No matter how perfect a home, an unpredictable, difficult neighbour will cause you stress at best and make your life a misery at worst. Under no circumstances would I risk it.

Shhhhitsmagic · 13/05/2025 21:09

Absolutely no chance. I grew up with a psycho next door neighbour who terrorised my mum for 20 years. No house is worth going through that!

DisforDarkChocolate · 13/05/2025 21:09

That stops it being a dream home.

Wowwee1234 · 13/05/2025 21:09

My parents had a nightmare neighbour, caused a severe issue for their mental health. Avoid, avoid, avoid.

feelingfree17 · 13/05/2025 21:08

Not in a million years.
Please never underestimate just how much a nutty neighbour can effect every area of your life. You may think you will ignore/rise above it, but trust me that won’t happen. I am talking from experience.

Well1mBack · 13/05/2025 21:06

Don't do it. We moved to a lovely farm holding, semi rural, peaceful until 3 years ago. Farmhouse was sold and they own the main court area and access road and they aren't nice people. Illegally running a business so now it feels like everyone is surrounding an industrial estate car mechanics. One of our neighbours confronted him, all hell broke loose, we offered to mediate, all the other neighbours got annoyed at us offering to mediate then the angry neighbours fell out with us too anyway as i felt forced to "side" with others. They all complained to police, I didn't and I felt it a step too far but now I feel stuck in a simmering rage pot from all sides. I'm anxious all the time when I go outside. It's ridiculous.

Fontet · 13/05/2025 21:03

Avoid at all costs...nightmare waiting to happen.

TwinklySquid · 13/05/2025 21:02

I don’t know how to put this delicately, but if they are elderly, it might not be a long term issue.
The problem with this type of crazy is they can snap and do physical harm. A bit of random shouting wouldn’t put me off though.

Okiedokie123 · 13/05/2025 21:00

Definitely not. I bet the current owners are fingers crossed that you'll be stupid enough to go ahead with it so they can escape.

CoastalCalm · 13/05/2025 20:58

No chance

WWomble · 13/05/2025 20:58

The neighbour would soon stop it being your dream house.

No, never, please don’t buy it.
