To find beauty treatments a bit cringe now

For years I've seen the beauty standard rise and rise, do you think we've reached peak?

I don't understand how and why people have the time and money to pay for it all - Botox and fillers are now mainstream, eyebrows now need laminating or tinting, nails are now expensive gels, lashes need extending, blah blah blah, all on top of necessaries like hair cuts / dye.

Now we've kind of peaked & it's got a bit excessive, does anyone else find these looks a bit cringe now? It's not my money or my life, but I can't help but think what a waste of time and money.

I know live and let live but I can't help to take an interest because as a woman I'm a target for these treatments too.

I’m in my 40s and have a team of 25-28 year old women at work. Literally none of them have big eyelashes or eyebrows or veneers. I don’t know where you’re all seeing this homogeneity.

Maybe you just want to claim it so you can feel superior. When in reality no generation is that homogeneous.

MrsPlantagenet · 13/05/2025 16:18

I think the thick, powder-brows trend is definitely over. I see very few women with scary brows now. Also the really fake eyelashes look seems much less popular.

When I was in my 20s, most young women had the teeth they were born to have, save for orthodontics. Nowadays, the beauty standard for most young women is to have perfect, white teeth. I have had my teeth whitened and I cringe a bit when I look at photos of my yellowish teeth when I was younger. But no-one noticed at the time, nor the amalgam fillings I used to have as pretty much everyone had one or 2.

I stopped wearing all makeup during the pandemic and didn't start again. Last time I wore it was on the 1st date with my now husband. Didn't wear it on the 2nd and he didn't notice so that was that! It has had absolutely no negative effect on my life.

So I do agree but then in the same way I find it kinda cringe thinking how much time and money I spent putting on then removing makeup (and I bought the cheap stuff) and you think other things are a bit cringe. But I'm sure the people who do them find something else even more cringe. So there's no real right and wrong.

Reading the person up thread who gets tattooed eyebrows and false eyelashes so they don't have to worry about them on holiday does make me a bit sad though. Not sad for them, just the idea that you 'have' to have these things.

I have never done tattooed eyebrows or eyelash extensions but I always make sure I take my usual makeup with me on holiday and that they are relatively full so there isn't any danger they would run out half way during the holiday (as I may not be able to replenish easily).. I would squash everything in the clear airport makeup bags and use dh's allowance ad well. Would pay for check in luggage too if it's not too expensive so I don't need to worry

I dunno about you but my dh takes a lot of pictures of me on holiday. I want to look my best or at least not worse than my usual self. I imagine eyebrows and lash extensions would make you look your best without doing makeup (a lot of
women don't want to do makeup while on holiday or perhaps they don't have much luggage allowance or they are going out for dinner somewhere lovely). My makeup routine is 7 minutes so it doesn't take much time and we rarely go to very fancy restaurants on holiday that need dressing up..

I often look back on photos from my holidays and I don't want to think- oh I don't look so nice in that photo. Eyebrows and lash extensions is just like permament brow powder and mascara..I don't much care for brows and lashes tbh, my focus is skin so I wear highlighter and blush and full base, and my eyes are just a simple line and lid tint with subtle mascara. Plus a shit load of primer and setting spray and powder cos my face eats makeup lol..

OurManyEnds · 13/05/2025 16:15

Ah yes, now we’re shaming fat and poor women too. If they don’t spend £200 on fillers once every 18 months they could afford a decent house 😆😆

The fuck has the house they live in to do with anything, or in fact, with you??

OneTaupeTraybake · 13/05/2025 16:11

It looks terrible!
I can't focus on some of the faces at work.
Weird lips, fillers and some look as though they have had some sort of stroke.
So tacky.
They go to the trouble of all this weird and expensive make up enhancing but won't lose weight. That would make a world of difference in looking good.

People have weird priorities.
How much must all this cost?!
Just save it and buy a decent house.

MakingSpaceForJoy · 13/05/2025 16:10

I don’t do any of that stuff, however I’m no slob. I spend a lot of money and time to look as fit, toned, healthy and natural as possible.

Cherry8809 · 13/05/2025 16:10

Ah, the “pick me” brigade are out in full force, I see.

Must have been climbing the walls without having yet another woman-bashing, judgemental thread to comment on for a few days.

I'm probably older than you, OP, but I don't know a single person who does any of this stuff. The occasional good haircut, and that's it. My friends are intelligent, professional women and they have better things to do than waste their time in salons. Most of us probably look our age but, you know what? That's absolutely fine.

I think that's really odd because most of my friends (and colleagues) are also professional intelligent women, with careers and families and hobbies, but the majority of them have something done.

Professionally cut and coloured hair, subtle lash tinting, professionally shaped and tinted brows, a bit of botox, medical grade facials, subtle manicures and pedicures. You wouldn't know it by glancing at them, but I'd say about 80% do something.

doodleschnoodle · 13/05/2025 16:07

I love my gel nails, that and getting my hair done every six weeks are my ‘things’. Not fussed about the other stuff but I love catching sight of my nails during the day and seeing some nice nail art, it makes me smile. I get mine done every three weeks, and it is 100% just for me!

I’d say that most women I know get maybe a couple of things on the list and that’s it, I don’t really know many who get the whole shebang, but I guess that’s more of a friendship circle thing as you tend to hang out with people who have similar outlooks to you. I don’t see that many people walking around with massive filler lips and caterpillar eyelashes and all that stuff, outside of social media and Love Island.

So I think most people just pick and choose what’s important to them and what makes them feel good about themselves.

Varies a lot depending on where you are, around my way actually wearing clean clothes and brushing your hair is an achievement, most people go out in whatever they were wearing in the daytime and make up (apart from two resident goths) is minimal, but when I visit friends up north it’s very different, every women has eyebrows and nails done, pristine clothing, heels often and matching bags. I’m happy with my dress down community though

I live in the north - I never look the way you describe!

OurManyEnds · 13/05/2025 16:07

Intelligent women don’t waste their time in salons?! But…they do go to salons for haircuts though. But that’s not a waste of time according to you.

Got it.

I’m an intelligent woman, an author with published books, and I get Botox. Hasn’t gone to my brain yet. Nor am I pathologically judgemental.

People can do what they like with their bodies

but I just find it sad ( and sometimes laughable because to me so much of it looks ugly ) that they feel the need to do so much and spend so much. I do feel that woemn are being manipulated into spending money on pointless stuff because they shouldn’t need to change how they look to feel good about themselves

That’s how I feel… so much of it is about money. Preying on women’s insecurities to sell them something. The more money spent, the better.

Vesuvio · 13/05/2025 16:00

Yes I think it looks awful and cheap. I don’t find Botox, ridiculously pruned eyebrows or fake lashes attractive at all

OurManyEnds · 13/05/2025 15:59

Has been the case since the beginning of time, we’re hardly in a unique stage of humanity 🤷‍♀️

Ahhh women-shaming, mumsnet style.

Ever in the spirit, complete with photos 🥰

Shit isn’t it. I hate these threads, they all go the same way. Oh the youth of today, they all look the same, so tacky, Botox is a travesty of the patriarchy, but it’s of course fine that I get my eyebrows/eyelashes/nails done because, well, I just like it.

Could write these myself by now.

Augustus40 · 13/05/2025 15:48

Gels are bad for the nails. They can cause a lot of health issues. Podiatrists do not approve.

The world has gone mad over nail care.

Dermal fillers can migrate. I have been a few times but am in two minds these days. Too much money and risk.

outerspacepotato · 13/05/2025 15:33

"How did we manage to grow up without influencers?"

We didn't. Magazines, ads, commercials, and models, TV shows, movies, actors and actresses doing ads for brands for huge paychecks, they just have different names now like brand representative and influencer and social media has been added to the mediums pushing certain looks and consumerism overall.

It's the usual competition between women who care about such things, although as usual it's hard to tell what they're actually competing for.

Presumably not men, since most men don't even notice such things, and the ones who do tend to be gay.

Might just be jobs and promotions these days. "I'm more likely to land this position if my eyelashes are 2mm longer" etc., whether or not it really makes any difference.

Literally nobody has ever thought ‘I’ll get this job if I have bigger eyelashes’

Maybe they…just like them.

This thread is the same as all the Botox-judging threads. Basically almost every poster saying ‘I get x, y, and z done but those are fine and anything more is tacky, cheap, and indictment of the patriarchy 🤷‍♀️ that

thesimplelife85 · 13/05/2025 15:13

I get lots of beauty treatments and had plastic surgery, on a few areas! I think if it makes someone happy why do other people care? I never wear make up though but then I don't really go out anywhere to wear make up and if my DD wasn't happy about something on her body and thought it through I would 100% support her decision. you don't have to have treatments and surgery to look OTT just tweaks so you know it's changed.

theemmadilemma · 13/05/2025 15:10

I think some of it is very useful, it depends on how you use it.

High maintenance for low maintenance is my go to.

So my brows are just tinted and shaped every 6 weeks (lamination isn't good on me - but if it worked it would be another step out of getting ready). And I have my lashes lifted and tinted every 6 weeks.

Since I'm nearly 50 I don't wear foundation and having those 2 things done, means it takes me minutes to get ready and look polished but natural.

CreationNat1on · 13/05/2025 15:05

Mother of boys here, I think they are oblivious to it. The natural teenage girls might be less intimidating and more approachable, they never remark on it, slow bloomers.

TorroFerney · 13/05/2025 14:58

I think the word is cringeworthy not cringe . Cringe is something you do personally, an action.

I tried not to comment but struggled! I’ll get my coat. So you may find it cringeworthy that I posted this, and I may cringe later when I think about this post. Well I won’t but you get the gist. Hmm .
