Why do people vote for Reform and in particular Nigel Farage?

To those saying "Give Labour time" etc...

Maybe you're too young to remember the previous time Labour were in (1997).

Back then, migrants were clinging to the underneath of lorries & coaches to get into the country and the Labour government were actively encouraging it and telling us how we needed these migrants and how good they are for Britain & the economy.

Almost 30 years on and the only difference is the immigrants chosen form of transport and the quantity.

Both parties have just spent the last 30 years blaming each other.... promising that they're the party to fix it... but actually doing fuck-all constructive about it!

Like I said - I have no idea if Reform would live up to their promises - I very much doubt it. But I'm bored watching the shit-show just passing back and forth between the same two sides.

A change is as good as a rest.

Uh?
You do realise migrants coming on a boat or in a lorry cannot work? & spend years waiting for their claims to be processed.

Legal migration under Blair and Brown was around 230k pa, most young single, worked across sectors we didn't want to....

Under Sunak and Bojo, migration was running at 1m p.a, under Starmer, it has reduced to 440k, so reduced by over half.

Yes migration happened pre Brexit but as you say, the numbers have soared, way beyond anything pre Brexit ...who gave us Brexit?

...the very people who claim to have the solutions, Reform and the Tories, Badenoch even lies about her education, i doubt she has any ideas at all & Farage wants to send money to the Taliban.

That's actually not true. No government has ever, on the face of it, encouraged people to risk their lives to get into the UK. I think you're talking about opening up borders to people from eastern Europe when they joined the EU in 2004 - but those people didn't come in underneath coaches!

A constructive way to deal with the issue would be to open up safe routes. Another would be to rejoin the EU. I'm not terribly familiar with the intricacies of Reform policy (for obvious reasons) but I'm guessing those don't form the central plank of their manifesto?

Edited because of misspelling of borders.

Edited

On the contrary - With all the handouts our successive Governments keep giving them - the illegal immigrants are very much being encouraged to risk their lives.

Why else are they all crossing the big, safe land mass that is mainland Europe, then risking their lives to get to England?

If any Government really wanted to stop the dangerous crossings, be that by boat, underneath a lorry or walking through the Channel Tunnel - All they need to do is turn off the Magic Money Tap and it will stop in the blink of an eye.

But they don't!

Why not?!

And how would re-joining the EU magically solve the problem? We've been overrun with illegals for decades - long before Brexit was even a word.

Weird!

Give Reform time.... but DON'T Give Labour time......

Sounds fair

Exactly. The hypocrisy is astounding.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say it’s his dress sense. Ever since Micky Portillo ventured off to make tv shows on a train, the British people have lacked a certain vibe in menswear in politics they just cannot get from anywhere else.

That and he looks a bit like a frog, and we were all brought up to have sympathy for frogs through watching the Muppets. 🐸 For many of us, the Muppet Show was our early understanding of politics, ie how people of different types all had to get along and order had to come through the chaos. It has conditioned us to accept utter muppets for politicians too.

This all the way. 👏👏👏👏👏

Of course Reform won’t be able to “turn the oil tanker round” instantly. Nobody is able to correct things immediately what their predecessors ruined years and years before them. Give them time.

The government may change but the problems remain the same. The sheer idiocy of expecting an incoming government of any persuasion to turn the oil tanker round instantly is the problem. Reform would only make things a thousand times worse, hopefully they won’t get the chance to prove it.

Will Reform be any different if they get in? - I really have no idea... But I've been on this earth long enough to watch the keys being handed back and forth between Labour & Conservative several times and they're both as bad as each other.... If Reform turn out to be more of the same - Well, so be it... But just maybe... For what it's worth, I'm not a Reform fan. But as the saying goes - it's like doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

I kind of miss the John Major era. Dull and boring as an PM maybe and I don’t remember anything insignificant happening.

We need a new slogan: “make politics boring again”. Shoo out the clowns like Trump, Blair, Johnson, Farage, who hide behind their masks and Cheshire Cat grins, and replace them with dull and boring like Major, Brown, and so.

To be honest, whether a PM is “successful” or not often depends on the hand they were dealt in the first place. We might not think much of Theresa May (although she had the bonus of being dull and boring), but she was given a poisoned chalice.

Alexandra2001 · 01/09/2025 07:46

Southern25 · 29/08/2025 22:24

But Trump does what he says he says he is going to do. You say Farage is like Trump and just says what people want to hear.
But Trump says what people want to hear but follows it through.
So if Farage had a mandate and was democratically voted in , he could in theory carry out what he promises.

We don't have the US system and Trumps Tariffs may be made illegal at the Supreme court hearing.

Trump has a nick name TACO Trump Always Chickens Out.... look at his actions over Ukraine? love in with Putin?

Anyone in opposition, can say what they like, Farage wants to deport ALL migrants... ok where? what will he do when a country refuses to accept back a person then don't want?

He wants to give 10s of millions to the Taliban, the same Taliban than killed 457 british servicemen and women..... lovely.

He wants to open up old military bases and imprison them there.... so 1000s of armed guards and do you want a detention camp near you???

Its all BS, he caused the migrant crisis with the Brexit he campaigned for, he is nothing but a shit stirrer.

ATM just 3 out of 10 voters would vote for him, so if he gets in on 30%, 70% will hate a Reform Govt.

BTW a bit rich a BTL LL with a large property portfolio complaining about house prices.

Why do people think that they’re all in four star hotels? I’ve been in hotels and B&B which offer temporary accommodation to homeless people and they tend to be very, very basic. You’d really not be wanting to go there on your holidays. I’m imagining the asylum seeker ones will be similar and I’ve no reason to think otherwise. Maybe I’m missing something?

No you're not. People are housed in really basic accommodation, often in areas where there are no facilities, no transport, nowhere to buy affordable food, nothing to do. Nowhere to store or cook food, isolated from everyone and everything. I wish anti migrant people would spend a couple of weeks living like that because otherwise they refuse to believe it.

themoonandtenbob · 31/08/2025 10:23

I don't care whether it's appreciated or not.

I'm quoting facts.

According to the Centre for Ageing Better, around two million UK pensioners are living in poverty. Of these 2.1 million pensioners, 55% are in deep poverty and 29% in very deep poverty.
That is 16 % of all older people in poverty or one in six of everyone in later life.

I bet they'd love to be in a 4 star hotel with all their needs met.

Migrants aren't housed in 4 star hotels, nor do they live in luxury. I do encounter a lot of people in my role who've just been given leave to remain so my opinion is somewhat based on knowledge.

I think the tide of misinformation, such as the constant assertion that migrants live in luxury, is designed to make it hard or impossible to continue refuting those untruths. It's like whack a mole - you counter it and then someone else pops up saying the exact same thing. After a while you feel you don't have the time or energy to continue - you could make a full time job out of it and it seems so futile. Which I guess is the point.

Oh my God, yes, bring on the charm voids who actually want to serve the country and have at least half an idea what they're doing. Being in government isn't a bloody reality show. We need competence far more than chumminess or entertainment value. Plausible con artists can fuck off as well.

I’ve got a huge soft spot for Major. He was my MP and a bloody good one. He still has a house here and is spotted every now and then. I loved the way he stood up to his party, called them “the bastards” and still won the confidence vote he called himself. He’s an all round good bloke.

I’ve no idea what Reform would be like in government but the positive side would be it would be a massive shockwave to the two main parties. Imagine Labour and the Tories waking up to find out that they have both been voted out.

It would shake up politics forever. Then both of the other two main parties can have five years in opposition to work out what went so wrong.

And if Reform really are shit they’ll be voted out again.

I think it's all too easy to predict what Reform would be like in government, sadly.

This is precisely what is so terrifying. As everyone knows, abusers and con men are extremely polite and charming when they need to be. Boris being elected on the basis of “he’s so funny!” then proving to be utterly shit should have been a lesson for us all.

Dour and dull politicians get my vote.

People vote Farage in protest against an electoral system which is designed to ensure that one of two shit parties gets in and gets to be shit for the next five years until they eventually get so shit that we have to vote the other lot in so they get a chance to show how shit they also are.

I get it, even if I also think that anyone who thinks the answer is Nigel Farage must be quite the dimwit.

Ive actually met NF through my work, he is actually a very nice guy. Well mannered, considerate and easy to talk to. I have also met KS through work and he is the complete opposite…offhand, rude and arrogant.

NF cannot in any way stop the boats and neither can any other party nor the government. People are deluded if they think this.

Nigel just wants to “protect our kids” apparently.

Any Farage fans want to tell me what caused the UK to ban handguns in the first place ?
