Why do people vote for Reform and in particular Nigel Farage?

@suitcasesarepacked "Because the right to seek asylum is protected under international law and states are required to provide a fair process to seek asylum."

Asylum is protection or safety, especially for people who have left their own countries for their safety or because of war.

Are you telling me that those crossing the channel are fleeing war & persecution in France? Don't be ridiculous.

suitcasesarepacked · 02/09/2025 12:12

And to add, imagine something like the French Revolution happened in France now?

Would you take the view innocents should just be slaughtered and ‘its not our problem’ (I think some Faragist’s should just openly say what we think they think ).

If the revolution then spilled over into England would you be happy for your family to be also slaughtered or would you try flee for safety, say to Ireland?

If you accept people have a right to flee to safety, do you think the UK should be forced to accommodate every single French refugee because we’re next door, or would you hope Europe shared that burden?

Just think about it.

suitcasesarepacked · 02/09/2025 12:03

@themoonandtenbob

Because the right to seek asylum is protected under international law and states are required to provide a fair process to seek asylum. Countries are not allowed to criminalise the act of seeking asylum - this is illegal.

Because the countries in closest proximity to a country where innocent humans are being persecuted shouldn’t be expected to shoulder the full burden of providing refuge.

So Loughton’s question revealed that the UK does not make it possible for people to seek asylum via conventional routes and that politics tries to paint those who arrive unconventionally as criminals. (Incidentally, it’s illegal to deny asylum because the route was unconventional).

These laws exist - not to make your British life difficult, but to ensure every human in this earth can seek safety when they need to. Including you and your family. You feel safe now, but there may be a time when you unexpectedly shockingly horrifically need it … and the laws are there for YOU too.

If these laws are ignored because of Faragist racism, then we all are compromised.

Simple, people vote for reform for a number of reasons but the main two are...

  1. They appeal to their political views, mainly on immigration
  2. They do it as a protest against the traditional parties

I am not a reform voter however I can understand why some people would vote for them.

Personally I feel like Labour are doing a terrible job, for me a government has 3 main jobs:

  1. Maintain national security
  2. Improve the economic situation
  3. Provide services such as education, blue light, health (this one is debatable if it should fall 100% under the gov)

All parties have failed at numbers 2 & 3 over the last 15+ years at least. When you feel like a government is unable to perform its basic job a lot of people look at new and "shiny" options.

themoonandtenbob · 02/09/2025 11:50

@ladykale "are mostly caused by British and U.S gov f’ing up or destabilising their home countries for oil or profit…"

Interesting you should think that.

Where is the oil in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria or Eritrea ?

(Top 4 nationalities that want to come to UK.)

themoonandtenbob · 02/09/2025 11:45

@suitcasesarepacked "Priti Patel’s admission underscored that, under current rules, individuals arriving via irregular means (e.g., boat crossings) are often forced into dangerous and unauthorized journeys because no lawful alternatives are available to them"

They are not "forced" to do anything. They choose to cross the Chanel after having crossed through several "safe" countries.

Why should we provide a route for them?

The world is full of people who, sadly, are living in unenviable situations. We cannot help them all and cannot bring them all here.

ladykale · 02/09/2025 10:28

MiloMinderbinder925 · 13/05/2025 02:18

@caringcarer You want lower taxes but more money spent on defence, education and benefits. How does that work?

Sadly this sums up what the average British voter wants yet low productivity & growth so no money to fund these things… but let’s blame asylum seekers that actually accounts for tiniest amount of total government expenditure & are mostly caused by British and U.S gov f’ing up or destabilising their home countries for oil or profit…

If nobody is an illegal immigrant - Why do we have the "Illegal Migration Act 2023"

And if the rest of my post is just daft...

Why are they all crossing the big, safe land mass that is mainland Europe, then risking their lives to get to England?

This reminded me of Tim Loughton’s mic-drop question to Priti Patal. I found it again via ChatGPT:

The Question in Parliament

Labour MP Tim Loughton directly challenged Priti Patel during a Home Affairs Committee session:

“What safe and legal route is available if you’re not an Afghan, not Syrian, not on one of those specialist schemes and if you are genuinely fleeing from danger and would be likely to be granted asylum status?”

This followed Loughton pressing Patel on her claims about alternative routes and her statement that people arriving via small boats “should be claiming asylum in other countries.” Patel responded by referencing existing resettlement programs but admitted:

“We don’t currently have those routes in place.”

Context and Significance

  • The query highlighted a major gap: asylum seekers from countries outside flagship programs (e.g., for Syria or Afghanistan) have no safe and legal means to reach the UK—even if they face legitimate risk.
  • Priti Patel’s admission underscored that, under current rules, individuals arriving via irregular means (e.g., boat crossings) are often forced into dangerous and unauthorized journeys because no lawful alternatives are available to them.

I wouldn't worry too much.

If & when it happens - there'll be nothing left of the country to damage after the ConLabs have finished playing with the wrecking ball...

Exactly

I think it's very easy to predict what Reform would be like as a government. We're getting a taste of it from local councils. They would be a combination of the worst of the Johnson and Truss governments, multiplied by around 10. I suspect it wouldn't be too long before the whole thing collapsed, but I hate to think about the damage they will do to the country in the meantime.

"There is a lot of mis information spread, much of it by the right wing, who keep telling everyone that a migrant will get a free house, medical care and great benefits."

So, if it's mis information spread by the right wing - Are you suggesting that that same right wing is also spreading this mis information back to these people's country of origin?

'cos they all seem to be under the impression that England is the land of milk & honey - That's why they want to come here. There have been plenty of video clips where migrants in mainland Europe have been asked why they want to come to England.

Either:

That's true - England IS the land of milk & honey.

Or

It's mis information spread, as you state, largely by the right wing... And if so - why would the right wing be spreading information that's going to attract even more of them over here?

And surely if it IS mis information - we've had enough of them arrive here to realise that, actually, England is NOT the land of milk & honey that they were lead to believe... And they would immediately contact their friends and family back home and advise them not to bother wasting their time, effort & risking their life.

And, hey-presto - the illegal immigration would stop in a week.

But alas, it continues - So there must be some truth in that right wing mis information...

No, I don't think they come here for that reason. Many want to come here because they have relatives or friends here, or because they already know the language. Some come because we have a decent reputation for human rights. And some come because our rules up to now have been more relaxed about bringing families, but that is about to change anyway.

Ratafia · 02/09/2025 00:22

Southern25 · 31/08/2025 21:51

I’ve no idea what Reform would be like in government but the positive side would be it would be a massive shockwave to the two main parties. Imagine Labour and the Tories waking up to find out that they have both been voted out.

It would shake up politics forever. Then both of the other two main parties can have five years in opposition to work out what went so wrong.

And if Reform really are shit they’ll be voted out again.

I think it's very easy to predict what Reform would be like as a government. We're getting a taste of it from local councils. And they are therefore illegal migrants and are criminals

The government may want to refer to them as "irregular migrants" but it doesn't change their legal status.

What's that got to do with me?

Not correct, once registered, an asylum seeker in France gets emergency healthcare, inc dental, after 3 months, they get access to general healthcare.

They also get accommodation.

Anyone in France will also get emergency treatment, do you think migrant run by a car, is left to die on the street?

Most migrants in Europe, wish to stay in mainland Europe.

There is a lot of mis information spread, much of it by the right wing, who keep telling everyone that a migrant will get a free house, medical care and great benefits.

You don't believe that our benefits are a big pull factor? Free housing and medical care for example.

Much better in UK than in France ie
Migrants without any legal status:
Migrants who do not file for asylum, who are undocumented (illegal) on French territory, have no right to anything.
Asylum seekers:
When arriving in France, migrants who file an asylum application are entitled to ADA (asylum seeker allowance), which varies depending on the applicant’s family situation (with or without children). The amount ranges from 6.80 euros per day for a single person (about 190 euros per month) to 17 euros per day for a couple with two children (about 476 euros per month) to 23.80 euros per day for a family of 6 people (about 660 euros per month).
Apart from this aid, asylum seekers have no right to anything.

That illegal migrants can exploit the Black Market in UK ?

That the lack of Identity Cards makes it easier to people to "disappear" into the Black Economy in UK

You called people "illegals".That's rude and it's crass.

You do know that under the Refugee Convention, people don't have to stop in the first safe country they reach? People's reasons for choosing the UK are their business; either way they'll be granted the right to remain or turned away. The rest is immaterial.

Well if truncating "illegal immigrants" to "illegals" is my biggest crime - I think I can live with that on my conscience.

And I agree with you that if people choose to enter the UK illegally - that's their business.

But as a UK tax payer who is contributing to their Boarder Force taxi, Coastguard spotter plane and subsequent upkeep once they've landed here - it's my business as well.

As it is every other person who pays tax in this country - it's their business too, if they wish.

Southern25 · 01/09/2025 18:54

I don’t see how Farage and Brexit is the cause of the boats though. Being in the EU wouldn’t have any significance to numbers surely ?

They want to come here because once they arrive it’s highly likely they’ll be able to remain here and be placed into hotels or emergency accommodation.

People say they should be able to work ? Surely that depends on the job doesn’t it? How can you do a DBS check on a person that has no identity? How can you let them work with vulnerable, older people or children if you can’t vet them ?

Shouldn’t everyone that arrives have their finger prints taken so you can atleast they are in the police national database?

On the contrary - With all the handouts our successive Governments keep giving them - the illegal immigrants are very much being encouraged to risk their lives.

Why else are they all crossing the big, safe land mass that is mainland Europe, then risking their lives to get to England?

If any Government really wanted to stop the dangerous crossings, be that by boat, underneath a lorry or walking through the Channel Tunnel - All they need to do is turn off the Magic Money Tap and it will stop in the blink of an eye.

But they don't!

Why not?!

And how would re-joining the EU magically solve the problem? We've been overrun with illegals for decades - long before Brexit was even a word.
