Why do people vote for Reform and in particular Nigel Farage?

Because he's a relatively skilled speaker. Like many others in the 1980s, he was literally taught the art of persuasive speaking - or rhetoric as it's properly known. So was Johnson as it happens. Trump's a monkey in comparison to these guys.

And because Farage learned from Enoch Powell, a successful Cambridge academic with a background in classics. The thing that Powell understood very well was that if you wanted the people to vote for you, then you must appear like you're on their side. There are various ways of doing this, for example, in Powell's case, for his River of Blood speech, he simply made up the housewives and concerned folk who he was quoting. Neither they, or the problems they were talking about, actually existed. But it didn't matter because it SEEMED real to people.

Farage is cut from the same cloth. His background also involves fiction - commodity trading and futures. He knows how to work a market, how to operate the levers and pulleys. And in the same way that people believe money is somehow real (when actually it's just numbers or bits of plasticised paper in their wallet), they believe what he's saying has some sort of basis in fact. It doesn't. He's a kind of one man casino. But you know what they say, the house always wins.

There's an old Latin tag: cui prodest? It means 'Who stands to gain?' Farage will know this in its original Latin. Powell studied it and understood it intimately. The average bod in the street has no idea that they're just the pawns in this game, the future casualties, the cannon fodder. They're clueless. They have neither the education or the skills to work out what's happening. And so like turkeys they'll vote for Christmas and then wonder why their teenage children / grandchildren are being called up to die in ditches.

Those who do not understand the lessons of history are doomed to repeat it, eh.

I mean MN would be a pretty barren space if the reply to every thread were: "go and find the answer yourself".

Maddie05 · 13/05/2025 01:33

Are you a reform voter? I'd love some insight 🙂

No you don't, you just want to bash a party that isn't run by Corbinistas 😁

themoonandtenbob · 30/08/2025 14:24

I could do it but if people aren't intelligent to work it out for themselves then we don't want them in our party.😃

But you said the racism word, I didn’t . It’s done to you to back up your comments.Which you couldn’t do after four posts replying to me

Oh dear. Oh well, I will leave it there so you can feel like you've 'won' as you don't seem able to grasp the concept of reading, understanding and developing an informed view. That Nigel Farage is racist is a view I have formed through exploring evidence from a wide range of sources. You appear unwilling to do similar, which is your right.

I hope you have a wonderful day.

I voted Reform. I'm sick of high taxes, far too much money being spent on immigration in one way or another. Money being wasted by translating English into so many languages, in NHS, local councils etc in the form of both translator's and leaflets. Too much money being wasted on Diversity Officers. Fuel having sky high prices due to UK leading net zero policies at expense of economy. Illegal immigrants being housed on 4* hotels whilst UK homeless people living on streets outside of said hotels. Never enough money to fund education properly yet still giving foreign aid. Young single people working hard yet taxes so high there is only a small chance they can buy a home on one income. Not enough spent on defense over many years leaving the UK vulnerable to attack by Putin. Tax on death, so after working hard all of a person's life they can't leave all wealth to their DC if they choose too. They will reinstate WFA for pensioners. I don't like the 2 family cap thrusting DC into poverty, imposed by Tories, kept by Labour and opposed by Farage. Reform listen to what people want. I know I will be accused of being racist but I'm not. I rent out btl properties and don't discriminate provided people are here legally and have a share code, pass affordability test, a housing reference and can speak English.

I wish mn didnt get rid of the laugh reaction

You’ve failed again. People like you are part of the problem. You’re quick to use racism without any facts or can’t give an actual example .

You don’t like Farage and disagree with him fine. I’m sure he knows millions feel the same. But using racism without any facts is what causes more division. You don’t have an example do you ?

Edited

I've failed nothing, it is your comprehension that appears to be failing. Go and do the research and find out for yourself what type of man he is. My opinion, based on evidence is that he is racist. I'm not telling you to believe me, I'm telling you to inform yourself properly, which you seem unwilling to do.

Southern25 · 30/08/2025 14:07

Readyforslippers · 30/08/2025 14:03

I certainly haven't, I'm suggesting you inform yourself and come to your own conclusions. To me, all the evidence strongly shows he is racist, I won't tell you how to feel. The evidence is there to be read, you just have to do so. I could post lots of quotes that I feel prove this beyond all doubt, however if not in context these would be of little use to someone trying to properly inform themselves.

Again you can’t give me an example of racism. You’ve proved my point entirely.

You don't have to look far, it is in many of the things he has said over the many years he's been hanging around like a bad smell. I tend to use a variety of sources, from live news broadcasts in TV/radio where he has been speaking, and various write ups on a range of news sites as I like to have a well-informed, broad view from which to inform my opinions, rather than rely on one single source of information. I can't do that for you, you need to read and understand to come to your own opinion.

I'm not sure worse suffering is what we all need though.

Actually he is a very intelligent man with excellent communication skills and very competent in debates.

I agree that he is but that doesn't make him right, it makes him dangerous. He's also quite happy to practise strategic lying, promise things he can't possibly deliver and then twist and slither his way out of them (see his stance on arresting and deporting women and children).

Yes I always think hallitosis

How things have changed even in just over a year. It used to be the left on here asking why people voted Tory now they want to know why people want to vote for Reform. Tory voters used to be bullied and ridiculed on here now it's the Reform voters. Funny old world!

That’s because the Tories have become an irrelevance and Reform is apparently on the rise.

As a politically neutral person can you give me an example of Farages racism, other than because it’s suits a narrative or everyone says he is.

Ive yet to hear him say anything that can be classed at ‘racist’ which is a strong allegation to say about someone without it being proven.

Infact on the run up to Brexit he said we should stop uncontrolled immigration from the EU, which is predominantly white people.

And he went further and said we should allow more people from the Commonwealth here instead. Which are predominantly black and Asian people.

Relatable? As a woman with a daughter I don't relate to anyone who is so misogynistic. Or racist for that matter.

Like Johnson, he promises miracles and the moon on a stick. It’s easy to do that while in opposition. Like Johnson and Blair did for themselves, he cares about one thing: Nigel Farage.

Soneone said Starmer made a lot of empty promises. Did he? As far as I remember, he made a point of under-promising. I don’t like Starmer much, but I’m deeply suspicious of politicians who promise miracles.

But Trump does what he says he says he is going to do. You say Farage is like Trump and just says what people want to hear.
But Trump says what people want to hear but follows it through.
So if Farage had a mandate and was democratically voted in , he could in theory carry out what he promises.

But he doesn’t.

Where is the free IVF he promised all American women? Where are the lower food prices? The improved job market? Though he did fire the respected PhD statistician who failed to massage the jobs data. (She was the Director of the nonpartisan National Labour Relations Board)

Despite the threats and publicity, mass deportations on the scale discussed have bot really happened yet. Despite the promises, interest rates have not gone down.

Etc, etc, etc.

Above all where is the peace in Ukraine, in Israel - anywhere, in fact - that he promised to broker on Day 1?

Trump throws a lot of darts. A few hit the board

Readyforslippers · 30/08/2025 12:43

I honestly can't imagine. The people who think things are bad now have a huge shock coming if he actually gets voted for. Disgusting, immoral man, with only his interest at heart. He likes money and publicity and the British public seem quite willing to throw both at him at the moment.

luckylavender · 30/08/2025 12:41

ReplacementBusService · 13/05/2025 01:12

He personally is really skilled at making people think he is on their side, and is one of the rarer politicians who often appears to be saying something he believes in. We need more people in power who say something that feels real and meaningful.

Without him, Reform would just be another minor right wing bunch of nutters who nobody would have heard of. With Farage they have themselves and English Trump, ready to lead us into a bright future where men can be men, preferably if they are white or orange skinned, and women can stay home barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen, and all the foreigners can go home unless they are driving an Uber or grafting down at the hospital 🫡

He is certainly a good communicator but also a vicious snake. He doesn’t give a damn about anyone except himself.

missmollygreen · 30/08/2025 12:28

Because there aren’t many people like him. I can only think of three politicians - Trump, Farage and Johnson. And I think they’re dangerous because people get so caught up in the “charisma” they don’t listen to what they’re actually saying. Of course there is the other side which is that they’re Marmite and people like me find them repellent.
