Inside out clothes in the washing basket

Why? Why can’t my family do this? It’s so simple, You put your clothes in the basket. Please turn them the right side out so I can wash them without having to do this. So annoying.

Why can’t you just wash them inside out?

If it’s half in half out, that’s annoying and you should put the dirty clothes back on their bed until they put it in the right way 🤣

Depending on my mood I just leave them in the basket
Ditto if there's a belt in his jeans!

Zanatdy · 13/05/2025 06:05

Your kids are adults. Give them a washing day and tell them to do their own laundry.

JustAMum31 · 13/05/2025 05:39

@Ishoulddomore Are you my husband by any chance? 🫠

Just incase you are, I’ll say it again…
JUST LEAVE THE INSIDE OUT CLOTHES IF THEY BOTHER YOU THAT MUCH 😂 I’LL WASH THEM MYSELF 🙃

LindorDoubleChoc · 13/05/2025 05:37

Mine all have strict instructions to please put everything in the basket inside out. Less wear and tear and fading on the right side of the clothes. I line dry everything inside out too.

Yawn (again). It could be said that BOTH parties "help around the house". Incidentally, do any of you rabid feminists actually give any "help" with jobs which men usually do?

Please stop trying to police the language people use, you are not some higher beings who can tell others what to say. We don't all belong to "feminist circles" and don't want to.

OK cool girl 🫡💅

Just so you know in feminist circles we don't like the phrase "help around the house". It implies tending to the home is woman's work and you're just there to generously lend her a hand with her duties

Mine are always turned inside out to wash so when they are hung out they don’t fade - I thought that was how you’re mean to to it?

So I actually have the opposite problem of why can’t you turn them inside out properly!

Odd socks annoy me. My wife has a demanding job, the least I can do is help her around the house.

Hanging many clothes on the line inside out keeps their colour for longer.

PeloMom · 13/05/2025 03:37

Most of the clothes say to wash inside out on the instructions.

Ilovecleaning · 13/05/2025 03:31

PS - we often hear “Dad/DH helps around the house”- said proudly and received with admiring nods and smiles.
Who hears “Mum/wife helps around the house “? - it would be received with quizzical looks and bemusement.

I know what you mean OP. Some things wash better inside out but I'm guessing you're comparing about your family just throwing things in the laundry basket without a thought. My DH puts things in one leg in and one leg out or jumpers with t shirts still inside them...

I’d throw them back at him and tell him to sort them out. Then I’d tell him he needs to take responsibility for doing some of the household washing , drying and ironing. And tell him it’s his responsibility, it’s not “helping” - I hate that “helpful dad” crap. Who ever says “helpful mum”?

Ishoulddomore · 12/05/2025 22:52

Interesting, if everything was inside out for the reasons given in other posts I wouldn’t have a problem. What about when you get odd socks because someone can’t be bothered to put both in?

I only washed what was in the basket. If only one sock of a pair went in, it got returned to the bedroom washed and dried and it was up to the owner to find its match and put it in the basket, and then I'd wash it.

However, my kids did their own laundry from about age 13 and I have no idea how they managed their socks.

For the longest time too, I only bought either black or white socks in multi packs so oddities really weren't an issue.

Why don't you let your adult children do their own laundry?

mathanxiety · 13/05/2025 01:44

I swear everything in my laundry basket turns itself inside out or outside in regardless of where it was to begin with.

The only thing I wouldn't wash was balled up socks and rolled up sleeves. They were ignored until their owners fixed the problem.

Nanny0gg · 12/05/2025 23:52

Ishoulddomore · 12/05/2025 22:54

But I have to turn them before i iron them, or can I iron them inside out?

Most need ironing on the wrong side unless you need to put a crease in it (trousers) then use a cloth

My family are trained to turn them inside out (except socks)

dementedpixie · 12/05/2025 21:56

You're supposed to wash them inside out especially if there are buttons or zips

And for when they're hung on the line (fading)

And most clothes should be ironed on the wrong side

GravyBoatWars · 12/05/2025 23:47

I'm sorry... did I just catch that you're doing laundry for 21 and 28 year-old adults? What do they pay or barter for that service?

GravyBoatWars · 12/05/2025 23:44

This is just inventing conflict. Does it stem from wanting to control how things happen? Or wanting more appreciation for your effort? Or wanting an excuse to hand some of the task back to others? There's zero functional reason for turning all items rightside out before washing.

We teach the littles to separate individual items (socks not balled up, pants out of trousers) and empty pockets but otherwise everything goes in the wash how it was put in the basket. Even our 4 year-old folds and puts their own clean laundry away (with support and guidance, obviously) so they get to turn items rightside out then and in secondary they do their own laundry on designated days after learning the process in prior years. If the older ones want to hang or fold their clean clothes inside out that's their business. School uniform pieces and smart clothes with special care requirements go in designated baskets (older kids get to decide if they sort as they go or on wash day) but everything else goes in the same load on cool by owner so each person's laundry stays separate. Only a fraction of laundry gets ironed but most of those are better ironed inside-out anyways to prevent a sheen.

PickAChew · 12/05/2025 23:28

If DH put his socks in the wash balled up, they go through the washer and dryer balled up.

Similarly, we have a 2 sided basket. One side for regular 40 degrees with daz then in the dryer laundry, one side for gentler treatment. If DH puts a woolly jumper in the Daz side, it's on him (unless I've recently bought the jumper as a gift and he hasn't already pissed me off today)

RealEagle · 12/05/2025 23:27

I always wash and iron inside out

Ishoulddomore · 12/05/2025 23:25

Thanks for tips, I didnt know about washing/ironing clothes inside out. I’m not sure that’s why they put them in the wash like that though!

PickAChew · 12/05/2025 23:23

Lots of things need to be washed inside out as it's less wear and tear on a print, decorative stitching or a surface finish. I turn these things back the right way out to dry so they don't get weird creases.

Narwhalsh · 12/05/2025 23:22
  1. wash, dry and fold clothes as it gets put into the wash (if it’s inside out it stays inside out through the whole process). The wearer can turn the right way round.
  2. you don’t need to iron most things. Fold and stack and the creases come out of most things. Shirts/blouses are the exception
  3. odd socks can never be tamed

JoyousEagle · 12/05/2025 23:10

Ok.. leaving aside your “help” around the house. If anyone (apart from a small child) puts an unpaired sock in the wash, the other sock isn’t something someone else needs to go hunting for imo.

What’s wrong with helping someone you love in their house? My wife helps me as well. My kids aren’t kids anymore, 28 and 21. They can’t afford to move out
