Is this makeup heavy enough for wedding?

Getting married in Summer

I have quite a specific make up look that I like. Just wondering if you think it is appropriate for wedding day? Will I need more makeup in order to show up for photos?

I’m 29, have clear skin and luckily am considered pretty.

Do I need more makeup?

I always think mumsnetters are very practical and make points I never even think of.

So thanks in advance!

If you take the photo on the right id just add a little more mascara.

mrlistersgelfbride · 13/05/2025 00:40

I really like it.
A lot of mumsnetters don't seem to wear make up which is maybe why you've had skewed answers...only my perception.
I don't think wanting to wear foundation on your wedding day is unusual.
I love make up and wear probably too much every day 😅 but ...
That look is very natural, just the right kind of polished, and pretty in my opinion.

Copperoliverbear · 12/05/2025 23:30

Lovely.

Whocaresaboutit · 12/05/2025 23:27

It's the lips that spoil the whole look.
Why on earth do women spoil their otherwise lovely faces by using lip filler?
It looks awful.

heroinechic · 12/05/2025 22:03

I think the second photo is a good level for wedding make up. The base is quite heavy but will photograph well. Just watch out for products with SPF and make sure you get your make up artist to take a photo with flash at your trial. The last thing you want is flashback!

This will not photograph well. You need more makeup if you want the photos

I barely wore any make up on my wedding day, definitely no foundation or blush, my photos look fine (imo)
I would wear a lot more make up if I was getting married today ...because I'm not 25 anymore !

Hendersonsisnotrelish · 12/05/2025 21:56

Lots of you are bonkers and a bit rude. I have no desire to get married and wear some make up most days. Stop acting like it's weird to want to look your best on your wedding day .

houwseevryweekend · 12/05/2025 21:52

Pick up lipstick that won’t transfer onto your partner and everything else. I tried a few but the maybelline long stay was bomb proof. Lasted all day with no touch ups needed. I added a glossy lip balm over it to keep it more wet than matte but it passed the test of not transferring to DH’s face when I kissed him.

houwseevryweekend · 12/05/2025 21:47

This will look fine! Lovely look. A bit like amal clooney at her wedding. I had similar for my own wedding and did makeup myself. I’ve been married before (ha!) where I had an MUA do my look which was heavier as everyone said it wouldn’t show up in photos otherwise. I looked fine but just not me and so this time around I was much more subdued and focused on a great base (primer + foundation + highlighter) with a blush and brown eyeliner/soft eye colours instead of black to be softer. It looked great and our wedding featured in a popular online wedding magazine so it definitely was enough.

I disagree that it’s dated. It’s a classic look that’s been around for decades - the dark red lip of the 40s hasn’t dated so not sure why anyone thinks something this soft would. I can recommend Nars primer, foundation and bronzer/blush and their setting powder that makes you glow without being greasy. Don’t cake it on and I was told to use my fingers for a softer look. I personally avoided fake lashes and used a waterproof tube mascara (L’Oréal sky high) that makes them super long (curl them first). Much more natural but striking.

Plenty of people don't wear any. You need to go with whatever is normal for you otherwise you'll look at photos and cringe at how fake you look

Absolutely, you'll want to look like yourself!

menopausalfart · 12/05/2025 21:40

The second pic looks lovely.

MrsMoastyToasty · 12/05/2025 21:36

Will you have a veil covering your face? If you are then try your makeup with the veil. It mutes the colours.

latetothefisting · 12/05/2025 21:30

the only issue if you go for less is if your bridal party/friends are the type to go for more - then it might look a bit odd in photos. There is a reason most brides tend to wear heavy make up - most of the weddings I've been to it does look like a lot in the flesh but then looks good on photos.

The other issue is the summer aspect - I went to a wedding a few years ago when it was 30plus degrees - again although the bride's make up was heavy in person, at least hers was still on 12 hours later whereas mine had sweated off before the ceremony had even started!

Bear in mind your make up artist won't be hanging around so if you do go lighter make sure it's something you can touch up yourself - i.e. don't let her give you a bold lip colour (I know that's not really something you're thinking of but as an example) and then leave taking the lipstick with her!

EggnogNoggin · 12/05/2025 21:11

They are lovely looks, but I wonder if they would be too high contrast either your dress? Have you seen these looks as a full bodied image amd did you like them?

Growlybear83 · 12/05/2025 21:11

That makeup looks really quite heavy to me, especially the eyebrows. I think anyone would definitely look better with a more natural look.

You look lovely

Those are models. If I get anywhere near their appearance I’ll be very happy

If you don’t wear make up what’s the point of commenting on a thread asking for make up advice? Confused

I was trying and obviously failing to give a different perspective.

Parker231 · 12/05/2025 21:09

Cherrytree86 · 12/05/2025 21:03

@Parker231

it doesn’t cover it up though? Foundation is supposed to match your skin tone so it’s imperceptible, just looks like your skin but better. So again, you could have wore makeup and you would have looked like you

I was trying to give a different perspective that make up doesn’t have to be necessary for lovely wedding photos. I didn’t want it as it didn’t seem necessary - wasn’t a part of how I looked.

I wouldn’t have felt like me with make up covering up my skin, eye lids, etc.

A few things to consider: primer and setting spray will be really important if you want any the make up to last.

Be really careful not to use products with spf in them - they can have a weird mineral effect under the camera.

In terms of whether or not to wear heavier make up - there’s nothing wrong with wearing the kind of make up you’d normally be happy with, as long as it’s set well. You may just want to add a touch more bronzer and eye liner to define your features for the camera.

If you use a make up artist then I recommend buying whatever lipstick and concealer they are going to use so you can touch them up yourself as the day goes on.

ignore the people saying “WELL I WORE NO MAKE UP AND A SACK TO MY WEDDING” - it’s one of those weird things that mumsnet is strangely competitive about.

When I go to the office/dinner/coffee with friends I definitely wear make up.

To me it’s considered light - semi sheer foundation, blush, mascara, eyeliner, lipstick and some lip balm as gloss.

Do not go heavier if you don’t usually wear a lot of make up! A good make up artist will be able to give you a very natural look that still photographs well.

I don’t wear foundation everyday so I was very specific about how light I wanted the make up to be last summer for my wedding. And in turn the make up artist was honest about how much needed to go on for it to photograph well.

Basically you absolutely CAN have a natural make up look, look bridal and photograph well. I was so worried if I went too heavy I wouldn’t look like me, and I’m so glad I ignored other people’s opinions (other than MUA) because it was stunning on the day. Dewy and flawless, but very much still looked like me.
