Do phalloplasties actually work?

SilverTapz · 11/05/2025 22:38

After wondering about this for a while, I ended up searching phalloplasty online and ended up on a Reddit page where people post their progress. I had never seen one before an was curious, I guess. It was actually quite shocking. People with what looks like no muscle left on their forearms, someone with a necrotic 'scrotum', someone where the stitches were wide open and the tip has turned black and left a gaping hole etc etc. People seem to be commenting saying that they look great, they've made the right decision etc, but honestly they look absolutely butchered. It's scary. And I guess my question is, do they actually function? Some of these people are so young and it's scary what they've done to their bodies. I can't help but think a lot of them will regret the decision. Is it mainly cosmetic? Can they orgasm? Honestly just very shocked by what I've seen!

I also think with horror about the animals who were experimented upon to develop this surgery, along with vaginaplasty.

Also from the article:
"Transgender men are suffering from “postmenopausal” problems like incontinence in their 20s because of taking testosterone, a study has revealed.
Experts analysed 68 transgender men who were taking<a class="break-all" href="https://archive.ph/o/2bdC3/www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/05/11/teachers-trained-to-tell-children-about-hormone-blockers/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"> the cross-sex hormone to change their identity from female to male and found that 95 per cent had developed pelvic floor dysfunction.
...
Experts said the impact of the sex-changing drugs on bodily functions are under-researched and under-reported, with people “not being informed of the risks at gender clinics”.

Around 87 per cent of the participants had urinary symptoms such as incontinence, frequent toilet visits and bed-wetting, while 74 per cent had bowel issues including constipation or being unable to hold stools or wind in. Some 53 per cent suffered from sexual dysfunction."

Pelvic Floor Dysfunction in Transgender Men on Gender-affirming Hormone Therapy: A Descriptive Cross-sectional Study - International Urogynecology Journal

Introduction and Hypothesis The objective of this research is to explore the effects of hormone therapy using testosterone on pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) in transgender men. We hypothesize that PFD might be prevalent among transgender men undergoing...

Arguments that ignore that lots of other people have equally risky surgery for other non-medical reasons.

What? I and several other posters have already stated that any sort of unnecessary surgical procedures are unethical, the difference with this particular type of surgery is it is being performed on people with mental health issues, which necessarily reduces their capacity to consent and fully understand the consequences.

It’s experimentation on vulnerable, young people being sold a lie.

If someone wants to reduce the size of their nose that is objectively something that can be achieved through cosmetic surgery, but telling people they can change sex by undergoing these barbaric procedures is an outright lie, can you not see the difference? If you lack the capacity for informed consent it is morally reprehensible for any dr to carry out these procedures.

Trans people having these surgeries are aware of the risks

One of the top questions asked by those undergoing these surgeries is ‘Will I produce sperm?’ That give you an idea of how far these young girls are from understanding what they are doing or being able to give informed consent.

Edited

I read a really sad example where the poor child thought she could father children. This is the level of understanding somd have.

I've pasted a link the to the article below:

"Elaine Miller, a pelvic health physiotherapist and member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy ... said that there was a “stigma” around incontinence and that people were “embarrassed” and minimised the issue.

“Wetting yourself is something that just is not socially acceptable, and it stops people from exercising, it stops them from having intimate relationships, it stops them from travelling, it has work impacts,” she said.

“The impact a bit of leaking has on these young people’s lives is huge. It really needs to be properly discussed within gender clinics because I would expect that almost 100 per cent of female people that take cross-sex hormones will end up with these problems,” she added, noting that the study was “robust” and probably underplayed the issue.

“It’s really sad when we hear people say, ‘nobody ever told me this’, and they should have been informed of the risks in gender clinics.”

Were you this concerned about puberty blockers for precocious puberty?

No equivalence. Try again.

ArtTheClown · 12/05/2025 08:53

Where do I start - refer to my post above and educate yourself.

"Educate yourself" has to be one of the most obnoxious phrases currently used in the discourse.
It's not intented as a helpful suggestion, it's intended as a hostile implication that the user only holds their view because they haven't been "educated" (ie brainwashed) into Right Think.

TheKeatingFive · 12/05/2025 08:53

If you read the Cass report, you'll see that there are huge issues with proper follow up studies and evaluation of all kinds of 'gender affirming care'. In that plenty of trusts simply arent doing any.

So the long term effects of these procedures are not being tracked, let alone analysed properly.

Lovelysummerdays · 12/05/2025 08:53

TheKeatingFive · 12/05/2025 08:27

And this is why mainstream discussion about the problems with the surgery doesn't happy, OP.

Apparently it makes us 'bigots' to do that

I think it interrupts the positivity. So it’s sold as gender affirming healthcare which sounds really fluffy and nice. Denying trans (teens) gender affirming health care sounds bad, I instinctively don’t want to deny anyone healthcare.

Then you read a bit more about it and think that sounds horrific, even people who have the surgery and it’s not gone well are shouted down.

It’s the whole no debate thing. My dc have come home from school “they can make a penis or vagina” It drives me bonkers, like it’s a wave a magic wand thing. I explained how it was done(briefly) they all looked a bit green.

😂Nope - that no longer works.

You need to do the work and provide the evidence.

Gettingbysomehow · 12/05/2025 08:53

TheOriginalEmu · 12/05/2025 04:26

of course they are told of the risks! Do you imagine some dodgy doctor with long coat on is handing out puberty blockers and phalloplasty and not explaining the risks of both??

You have to experience it to really understand. Don't tell kids this is fine. They need treatment for body dysmorphia, they don't need second class penises.

Go to the European Society of Sexual Medicine website and educate yourself using expert-led material - consensus statements, guidelines, etc. Then search Pubmed for balanced peer-reviewed articles on outcomes after surgery. Asking a question on a forum like this is ridiculous - as demonstrated by the replies you've received.

heathspeedwell · 12/05/2025 08:50

How can young people consent to this when the side effects are not made clear to them?

Someone on here compared taking puberty blockers for dysphoria to taking blockers for precocious puberty. The fact anyone can make that comparison when the outcomes are so completely different demonstrates how much staggering ignorance is out there.

Kids who take blockers temporarily for precocious puberty go through puberty normally and develop normal bodies. Kids who take blockers for dysphoria remain on blockers until they take cross sex hormones so they never go through puberty. Their genitals never grow so they are sterile and unable to orgasm. There's evidence to suggest that their bones, endocrine systems and brains never develop properly. Jazz Jennings took blockers and as a result didn't have enough penile skin to invert to create a 'neovagina'. So the surgeons had to remove a length of his colon.

Even the side effects of taking large doses of testosterone are not properly explained.

I read a tragic article where a urologist said she's seen countless transmen at her surgery, all of whom are incontinent and no-one warned them that it was an almost guaranteed side effect of taking testosterone.

Not just 'people'.

The Cass Review confirmed what various whistleblowers from the Tavistock had been saying for years — that almost every patient they saw was either autistic: lesbian or gay and from a homophobic family or culture that didn't support homosexuality: a victim of sexual abuse: from a chaotic and unstable family background or the care system.

We have been sterilising and mutilating some of the most vulnerable young people in society in the name of kindness and acceptance. We've been sterilising and training away lesbian and gay and autistic people. It's not just the surgery that does so much damage. Cross-sex hormones have terrible effects on bones: so many of the young trans people you see at events use sticks. There is a lack of brain development and lower IQ in those who were prescribed puberty blockers when young. It's the biggest medical and social scandal since the craze for dealing with opinionated women by giving them lobotomies.

This.
These young women are facing the type of incontinence problems normally found in post birth injuries and in post menopausal women. Elaine Miller (Gussie Grips quoted in the article) has been warning of this for many years:

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13461901/Transgender-men-postmenopausal-bladder-bowel-problems.html

Thise defending this need to wake up. It's an immense medical scandal that deliberately and cynically targets the young and vulnerable.

Transgender men suffer from 'postmenopausal' symptoms

Researchers found that of the 68 transgender men who participated in the study, 95 per cent developed pelvic floor dysfunction after taking the hormone to transition from female to male.

TheOriginalEmu · 12/05/2025 04:19

Were you this concerned about puberty blockers for precocious puberty?

Why would it be? Children taking puberty blockers for precocious puberty have an endocrine disorder (and start to go through puberty before the age of eight years old). They take them for them minimum time necessary to delay puberty until around nine or ten then stop taking taking them and go through puberty. This means they continue to sexually mature - something that children who take them for trans do so expressly to avoid.

How on earth these operations are even legal is completely beyond me. It's hardly worth complaining about FGM in so called underdeveloped countries when we allow barbaric "sex change" operations in our own.

Well that's why labioplasty was classified as a form of FGM but it's still legal for white women to have it in Harley Street if they don't like the way their vagina looks.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 12/05/2025 08:48

SquashedMallow · 11/05/2025 23:20

It's sad that these people will butcher their bodies to achieve a non functioning caricature of a penis (same with the reverse surgery) I saw a transwoman on a programme who's "neo vagina" looked like a butchered stitched up scrotum with a "line in the middle" like a child had sculpted. It's multilation.

If I fell in love with someone (yes I'd make an exception for you Aydian Dowling ! - Google people !) I'd rather accept they had a vagina and work with it than see a butchered surgical pretend penis.

Kate Bornstein has written about her surgery (1986). She said she was post-operatively orgasmic, saying “Yeah, the plumbing works, and so does the electricity.”

My nipple turned black and necrotic (fortunately didn't fall off) after standard breast reduction. But it's flat with no function and is now not a real nipple (has almost turned into just regular skin, with a slight demarcation where the nipple itself begins).
