Is this an awful wedding guest dress?!

Looking for opinions! I'm a mum of 2 little children and rarely go to events anymore, both children under 4, size 14-16, 5.3 and wanted something that hid my legs and tops of arms and skimmed over tummy so that I felt slightly more comfortable. I've always had reasonable success with Monsoon dresses and found this in the sale. I've been told by brides friends to all send photos of our outfits (unsure why!) And that I cannot wear this and will upstage her. I asked if it was anything like her dress and they said not even remotely close! I read all the reviews before purchasing and most have worn this dress as a wedding guest! Is it my poor taste?!

can rely on mn for made up rules and invented etiquette
no long dresses, no mid dresses. They’re for bridal party only
nothing pale in case the flash of phone renders it white or too bridal

that Pale blue dress won’t look bridal

btw saying something is a fact, doesn’t necessarily make it a fact. It remains an opinion
Emphaising something in CAPITAL doesn’t add gravitas. It’s a bit feety stampy, princess has spoken

No it really doesn't. Possibly a bit of a bridesmaidy vibe but not 'bridal'.

I wouldn't be attending the wedding of anyone who vetted my outfit beforehand. Outrageous behaviour!

Nah, it definitely looks bridal. Irrefutable, can't be argued with I'm afraid. I know you're lying if you pretend otherwise, and so do you.

I wouldn't vet what people wore (and didn't) but that's the bride's choice. Her wedding, her rules. If people don't like her rules they are free not to attend. That's their only other choice beyond centering themselves and being arseholes on someone else's wedding day.

Nah. It literally looks bridal. You know it, she knows it, that's just a fact.

No, I don't 'know' it. I do not think it looks bridal. That clear enough for you?

Do you always struggle with the idea that not everyone has the same opinion, or is it just on this particular subject?

godmum56 · 11/05/2025 14:29

I think that is a very pretty dress. Does the bride know that her friends are controlling her wedding?

Russiandollsaresofullofthemselves · 11/05/2025 14:28

maybe they were just trying to stop you from wearing such a hideous dress and didn’t want to be rude.

onlytherain · 11/05/2025 14:27

@alwaysamused Just because someone is a bride does not mean they get full control over other people's lives. That's just nuts.

This dress in no way upstages a bride. You should have never been asked to send pictures of your dress. They are overstepping and are being incredibly rude.

I honestly don't think it looks bridal. It's blue with a pattern on.

Just to add, it is a bit weird the OP is pretending not to understand that the dress definitely looks bridal.

Great dress. If anyone wants a say over what you wear to a wedding, they can pay for it!

Don't talk daft. She's getting a free meal, and a day out, probably free alcohol as well. She can definitely pay for her own dress.

Her other option is not to go, of course. Or ignore what she's been told so she makes sure she is the centre of attention.

I have worn ivory long silk slip dress to a wedding. No one was upstaged. Guests were not confused
i didn’t wear a bolero or a shrug, I boldened it out in ivory

😲

This reminds of that episode of Schitts Creek when David asks Alexis if she’s wear a wedding dress to his wedding, and she tuts and rolls her eyes and says “Nooo David. It’s a white floor length gown…”

Maybe that's because different people have different opinions? 🤔

Whoarethoseguys · 11/05/2025 14:24

She sounds like a Bridezillsa, insisting on seeing everyone's outfit. I don't see anything wrong with it but I'm someone who believes guests should be welcome what very they are wearing.

I don't think it would upstage the bride.
I don't like it though, it's quite frumpy and I think you could do better.
You absolutely do not have to send pics of your outfit to the bride's friends!!

Agree with all this. I think it’s very frumpy.

That’s a perfectly normal guest dress and wouldn’t outshine a bride…

thatsgotit · 11/05/2025 14:22

Ellie1015 · 11/05/2025 14:01

Floor legnth and pale blue so almost looks white colour so no I wouldn't weather it as a wedding guest.

I've never understood this 'no pale dresses at weddings' business. No one's going to mistake OP for the bride.

That said, sounds like there's some Bridezilla-ing going on, dress choices being vetted and vetoed is ridiculous. I'd be tempted to wear it anyway just to say 'up yours' - I wouldn't actually do so, but I'd feel like it.

EverythingElseIsTaken · 11/05/2025 14:22

It’s a lovely dress but not really a wedding GUEST dress.

KimberleyClark · 11/05/2025 14:20

It’s lovely.

alwaysamused · 11/05/2025 14:19

You've been told not to wear it, so that's that.

I mean, you can go ahead and cause a problem and centre yourself and start a drama llama ding dong. Or you could not go. Or you could just wear another dress since it's not your wedding and, whether you agree with it or not, wearing this one will cause issues.

I don't agree with asking to see what guests are wearing in advance. But it's not my wedding. Or yours.

Redburnett · 11/05/2025 14:17

That dress looks totally unsuitable to me, far too much like a wedding dress or bridesmaid dress. It is not a guest dress, it is a 'centre of attention' dress. Sorry, I am with the bride on this one and amazed at some of the responses on here.

DeedlessIndeed · 11/05/2025 14:17

I did a quick glance and it appears white on my phone. Maybe she assumed that it is paler than reality?

My friend got married in a similar dress, so maybe bride has a similar style, so along with the colour it's too much?

Wild that you have to show it for pre-approval! I'd resent it, and probably think a touch less of my friend.

Jigsawasaurus · 11/05/2025 14:15

I wouldn't have even bothered sending a photo. I have no time for that nonsense and if it resulted in the invite being revoked, then I'd presume I'd swerved a ridiculous wedding.

If you like it, then wear it. It looks perfectly reasonable for a wedding guest to wear. If anyone is confused about who the bride is, then they have much bigger issues and I'd suggest they see a doctor.
