Is this an awful wedding guest dress?!

Looking for opinions! I'm a mum of 2 little children and rarely go to events anymore, both children under 4, size 14-16, 5.3 and wanted something that hid my legs and tops of arms and skimmed over tummy so that I felt slightly more comfortable. I've always had reasonable success with Monsoon dresses and found this in the sale. I've been told by brides friends to all send photos of our outfits (unsure why!) And that I cannot wear this and will upstage her. I asked if it was anything like her dress and they said not even remotely close! I read all the reviews before purchasing and most have worn this dress as a wedding guest! Is it my poor taste?!

Are you the OP? Projection is a real thing, so I will have to assume you are personally invested in the bridal choice of dress now.

Thanks for that, now I understand why you're lying :)

Ok, must fly, ciao!

What on earth are you on about???
Fuck sake, the batshittyness on this site gets worse by the day!

Ophy83 · 11/05/2025 16:38

It is incredibly rude of her to veto a dress, particularly one that you have already bought. Also wasteful. I'd be rescinding my acceptance of the invitation.

Lavenderandbrown · 11/05/2025 16:35

Op I’m considering this dress for a wedding in August. I’m 25 yrs older than you and I want to cover my arms and legs and be able to dance. The wedding colors are sage blush and cream. We favor long dresses at weddings becuse they are comfy elegant and special occasion There are literally thousands of long dresses on Saks Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus websites so surely a floor length dress is not considered bridesmaidy. And unless these wedding attire regulators are picking out and paying for your dress and watching and amusing your children while you get leisurely dressed hair and makeup they don’t have a say in what you or anyone else wears to a wedding.

TizerorFizz · 11/05/2025 16:34

Do they mean it’s not suitable because it’s an evening dress? The other Monsoon dresses posted are clearly day dresses. Maybe it’s the evening style embellishments?

CwmYoy · 11/05/2025 16:28

Not in the least bridal. Some posters have been to some very strange weddings to form that opinion.

maybe they were just trying to stop you from wearing such a hideous dress and didn’t want to be rude.

They may not want to be rude..unlike you! What a nasty thing to say!

It looks absolutely fine to me.

What on earth is this nonsense that you have to get your dress approved?

I couldn't agree more, although it looks like some bridezillas members of the bridal party have joined this thread and absolutely insist that it is too bridal looking

They are being ridiculous.

mumuseli · 11/05/2025 16:22

It doesn’t make sense to me that they said you absolutely can’t wear it because it will upstage the bride, but they have also said that it’s not remotely like her dress. So are they just saying it’s too nice?! I find it very odd that they would be so blunt and not put it more diplomatically, clearly and politely.

PinkTonic · 11/05/2025 16:21

I’ve never encountered this trend of brides policing guest’s outfits personally but based on some of what I see suggested on here as suitable wedding guest attire I guess it’s somewhat understandable. When was it that grown adults lost the ability to choose appropriate clothing for social situations?
OP the dress code for weddings is daywear unless specifically advised otherwise. That looks like a bridesmaids dress.

Illprobsregretthis · 11/05/2025 16:13

Oh my God I’m going to a wedding this week too and the invite said “if you are unsure of your outfit, please send it to the bride to check”. Have you ever heard anything like it?! I’ve never even met her, I know the groom. Just absolutely wild. This dress is also fine to wear and really pretty!

Christwosheds · 11/05/2025 16:13

alwaysamused · 11/05/2025 14:29

Nah, it definitely looks bridal. Irrefutable, can't be argued with I'm afraid. I know you're lying if you pretend otherwise, and so do you.

I wouldn't vet what people wore (and didn't) but that's the bride's choice. Her wedding, her rules. If people don't like her rules they are free not to attend. That's their only other choice beyond centering themselves and being arseholes on someone else's wedding day.

I think we’ve found the friend..

EmilyEmerald · 11/05/2025 16:12

I don't think there's anything at all wrong with the dress OP but I have recently purchased the attached for a wedding and find it very flattering, I have the same problem areas!

beAsensible1 · 11/05/2025 16:10

I’m not being rude, but if that dress will
upstage the bride then she has much bigger problems.

it’s a Bog standard wedding guest dress.

Catsandcannedbeans · 11/05/2025 16:08

Ahh yes wedding guest outfit. Always a fucking minefield if you’re a woman. It’s probably too light in colour and may photograph close to white?? Or it’s a bit too bridesmaid like? That’s my guess. Personally I think it looks frumpy and I’m sure there’s nicer dresses out there that will make you feel comfortable and appease bridezilla.

Got to go out now, so don't have time to keep responding to fairy tales.

So, OP, you know as well as literally everyone else on this thread, that the dress looks bridal. You are fully aware that this is why it has been vetoed. It's extremely weird to pretend otherwise.

I don't agee with brides policing outfits, but it's not your wedding so your choice is - suck it up and wear something else, don't go, or wear the bridal looking dress make it about yourself and cause a drama.

I think you'll go for option 3 since you're already pretending not to get it. Enjoy the drama llama ding dong you cause.

And to be clear, I don't, actually care. But just so you know, everyone knows you fully understand the problem, you are fooling literally nobody 😅😂

Drama llama you say……

You and me both!

This is a whole new level of control! And if the attitude was “don’t come then, it’s my rules. I wouldn’t go”. Having said that, none of my friends or family are that shallow.

Imagine if this was a man dictating to a woman what she could wear? But it’s ok woman to woman… no it’s not!

The sooner this nonsense stops the better.

Should’ve quoted @Heronwatcher

Heronwatcher · 11/05/2025 15:49

Honestly I would just have replied “no idea what I’m wearing yet, I’ll probably decide the day before 😘.”

user2848502016 · 11/05/2025 15:47

It’s lovely, the only issue I could see is if the bridesmaids were going to be in a similar colour, but if they’re not I would just ignore and wear it anyway. I can’t believe guests are being asked to send outfits for approval, unbelievable!
