Is this an awful wedding guest dress?!

Looking for opinions! I'm a mum of 2 little children and rarely go to events anymore, both children under 4, size 14-16, 5.3 and wanted something that hid my legs and tops of arms and skimmed over tummy so that I felt slightly more comfortable. I've always had reasonable success with Monsoon dresses and found this in the sale. I've been told by brides friends to all send photos of our outfits (unsure why!) And that I cannot wear this and will upstage her. I asked if it was anything like her dress and they said not even remotely close! I read all the reviews before purchasing and most have worn this dress as a wedding guest! Is it my poor taste?!

If someone asked me to send a picture of my wedding outfit I would reply that I’d be yanking something out of the wardrobe on the day so couldn’t predict it.

what absolute rubbish from the bride/ friends.

ignore them.

Thulpelly · 11/05/2025 17:41

It completely depends on the vibe of the wedding.. the length in the other photos gives it the appearance of a gown, and in a more casual wedding it might feel too much; purely due to the length and flowiness.

Was there no dress code on the invite?

BustyLaRoux · 11/05/2025 17:40

I’m really interested to know how @alwaysamused KNOWS the OP is lying! How can someone know that? I mean, they can believe that if they want. But how can they assert that their opinion about what someone else thinks is a fact.? It’s an opinion, surely. Which is different from a fact. What evidence is there to support this irrefutable fact I wonder..?

@Bumblingbee101 I think (opinion, not fact, by the way!) it does look potentially a bit bridesmaidy. But if there are reviews saying lots of people have worn this dress as a guest then arguably many people don’t share that opinion. I think it’s very pretty. Doubtful you would upstage the bride in it. Sounds like her look will be very different. I don’t understand why the friends get to veto though. I mean, I could maybe understand a very bridezilla bride wanting to veto outfits (though obviously that is way over the top!) but as for the friends getting a veto….did she ask them to do this for her? Why would they think they get to decide what someone wears to someone else’s wedding?! How very odd! And if you went on the hen do, then surely you are a close friend or relative of the bride as well. Why do they get to decide and not you?

If it were me I would be tempted to contact the bride myself and ask if she has a problem with the dress. I wouldn’t give two shiny shits what the friends thought!

thirdfiddle · 11/05/2025 17:28

Looks lovely to me, a bit retro, and nothing like any bridal or bridesmaid's dresses I've ever come across. Who is it you'd be showing up again? The bride, or maybe the bride's friend? Maybe check in with the bride that she really wanted her friends doing this, because it's a pretty weird thing to do.

SquirrelMadness · 11/05/2025 17:27

OP does the bride know her friends are being so rude to you? If so I wouldn't bother going to the wedding.

Otherwise I would just wear this dress, it's lovely and doesn't look bridal to most of the people responding to the thread. Don't buy two dresses to attend the wedding of someone who is rude enough to disrespect their guests like this.

Funnywonder · 11/05/2025 17:25

I’d send her a photo of something non bridal/different colour from bridesmaids/a bit plain and boring. Get it approved. Then turn up in a fucking massive silver sequin ball gown. Or leather bondage gear. I would be very very pissed off about having my outfit vetted. In the real world, as opposed to my fantasy world, I just wouldn’t go. Because, etiquette aside, this is a bridge too far and I absolutely hate being told what to do.

TiswasPhantomFlanFlinger · 11/05/2025 17:24

I wonder if the groom wants to veto all the men’s outfits.
This is taking Bridezilla to a whole new level.

Sassybooklover · 11/05/2025 17:23

I don't agree with this sending pictures of guests dresses to be scrutinized, it's ridiculous. I think the dress is gorgeous but I wonder if it's been deemed too 'bridesmaid like' by the brides friends. It's pale in colour, full length and could easily be worn as a bridesmaid dress. I would suggest going for a dress either knee or midi length, rather than maxi.

Pibrea · 11/05/2025 17:21

It’s lovely, wear it and take no notice of them! (or don’t go, which is what I’d probably do 😂)

I can’t believe the comments from the bride’s friends or the people on here. All I can say is, people absolutely lose their minds over weddings.

Whooowhooohoo · 11/05/2025 17:14

Is it white?

I think white is traditionally not worn by women guests.

It's blue.

There is no such rule. Traditional or contemporary
The dress is clearly pastel blue you can see that in the photo

Everyday a school day. New mn rule that long dress is inappropriate at wedding

IberianBlackout · 11/05/2025 17:13

Personally it’s a no from me but just because I feel like I’d be dressing up as Wendy from Peter Pan, really.

I feel its a pretty dress. However I would not wear it for a wedding no.long dresses would be a no go for me I think

Superhansrantowindsor · 11/05/2025 17:06

Leaving aside the nonsense of having your outfit approved - I think it’s too pale and long and a bit like a bridesmaids dress. However the right accessories, shoes and bag would make a difference.

Bumblingbee101 · 11/05/2025 14:55

Hi all! So I won't be donning a gimp suit this time 🤣 but will style it out with something!

@alwaysamused your not chief bridesmaid are you?! I understand it's not for everyone but as reviews on the website state it's been used by many others as a wedding guest outfit! I was checking in as I've never had to send photos in before! It's also darker in real life! I really want to hide my tummy and legs (being a postpartum mum) which is why I went for something long, you would know this if you had read my post properly!

If you lovely lot have any links to other dresses that are not too clingy or frumpy please post!

I'm 5'3 and size 14
My suggestion is next and filter the brand of dresses to "yours curve"

Reading through these comments, I've never heard before that you shouldn't wear a full length dress to a wedding? I've worn loads of full length dresses to weddings and also like a little sleeve over the tops of my arms but tend to go for V necks and darker colours, like navy blue.

steff13 · 11/05/2025 16:59

I was a flower girl when I was about 5 years old. The dress that I wore looks almost identical to this. I'm going to have to dig out a picture and see if I can find it.

Having said that, I think it's fine. It's much more modest than something that I would wear but there are lots of people who dress more modestly than I do. I don't think it looks in the least bit bridle and I don't think you're going to upstage the bride in any way.

As an aside, I notice that y'all say that you got something "in the sale." Is there one big sale a year there?

Aligirlbear · 11/05/2025 16:57

Lovely dress , perhaps it’s very similar colour / style to the bridesmaids ? If it is I have some sympathy but if it isn’t it screams of bidezilla behaviour ! Perhaps you could ask said brides friend the reason why it isn’t suitable.

C8H10N4O2 · 11/05/2025 16:55

@Bumblingbee101
The bridal party want to veto and approve guests outfits? WTAF?

The dress isn’t my style but I really cannot see how a blue/grey embroidered dress is going to upstage a designer bride and green/pink bridesmaids. Perhaps if they want to dictate your dress they could pay for it as well.

Peachy2005 · 11/05/2025 16:53

Send a pic of something truly unsuitable, then wear what you like 😂

TizerorFizz · 11/05/2025 16:45

@LavenderandbrownUsa isn’t the uk. If it’s a day wedding, and the guests are expected to wear daywear, you don’t normally wear an evening dress. If the invitation specifies evening wear or black tie or white tie, you know where you stand. If it’s lounge suits for men then usually it’s not embellished evening wear for women. In this case, it could be that’s the issue.

WithOnlyTheMemories · 11/05/2025 16:45

It's nice, and I suspect in real life not bridal but the photos are different.

My aunt wore a floor length pale creamy dress to my wedding, it looked quite summery and casual in real life but in the group photos it genuinely looks like two brides.

YearlySubscriptionRenewal · 11/05/2025 16:43

The problem is that you have now been asked not to wear this - bit weird, but you are a bit stuck.

I would at least ask what colour the bridesmaid will be in.. Who knows, maybe it's identical to what the mother is wearing or something.
