MIL trying on my engagement ring

Onering · 11/05/2025 10:38

Strained relationship. Recently got engaged. I took the engagement ring off for a second since I was doing gardening, came back to find MIL wearing my ring saying how pretty it is. She had been going on about how much she liked it before but to put it on without my permission seems invasive.

She wore it and put it to the light to see the diamond sparkle and commented on how nice it looked.

Aibu about being annoyed from this? Maybe my rocky relationship with her is skewering this for me. My ring now feels tainted because someone else has worn it and being someone I don't have a good relationship with... But again that could be me being ott.

I'm like that too.
If I buy something and something bad or negative happens on that particular day, even not directly connected to me for example a celebrity dies, I get rid if the item, chuck it, return or sell so it doesn't have the connection to it that day when it happened, even if I love the item. It just has to go..
In this case I would get rid of the ring if it gives you negative mil vibes. It's forever..

BeaRightThere · 11/05/2025 13:27

FFS. It's a ring. She liked it and tried it on. Grow up.

Zone2NorthLondon · 11/05/2025 13:24

Bad energies? You’ve got that woohoo disposition and likely you’ll be perpetually in emotional turmoil about something. All your life

XiCi · 11/05/2025 13:22

Onering · 11/05/2025 10:41

@Upsetbetty I believe in bad karma/energy. So if someone I have had bad times with tries on something that is of high significance to me, I then feel it's got negative connotations.

That is not how karma works ffs. Grow up.

Alwaystired23 · 11/05/2025 13:22

Get the sage on it and put it under a full moon.

Whitecleanoverneat · 11/05/2025 13:22

Mine tried to try mine on too. It wouldn't go on her finger so she sniffily said 'you must have very slim fingers, your ring is tiny!'

I don't, she thinks I'm overweight (we're about the same) but was clearly shocked my big fat fingers are smaller than hers.

I wouldn't have felt it was tainted, had it fit her, but I did think it was a weird thing to do.

Mine also has big problems with boundaries, being over bearing and generally over stepping.

KaleQueen · 11/05/2025 13:20

Onering · 11/05/2025 12:28

@KaleQueen yes that bit does get to me. Waiting for me to come back in from the garden so I'd see her with it on. Felt very much so in your face

I think you’re getting a hard time on here. I know exactly the type of person you’re talking about. (Not my MIL may I add) but I have seen people like this and they do these things to get a rise out of people. So I don’t think you’re being a diva at all

RedCrochetedWigFace · 11/05/2025 13:19

She was out of order trying it on without your permission and I think most people would know that. I think you are being overly dramatic though.

I think that things can carry energy too. I don't think it happens from a brief wearing though. There is the chance that other people tried on the ring in the shop or that the person making it/handling it also has bad energy and you don't seem to feel that would taint it.

I think your associations are more powerful and you are the only person who can change that. Try to see ot as her being complimentary about it and enjoying it.

I believe that is extremely silly.

notacooldad · 11/05/2025 13:11

I dont know if it's been asked, but how would you feel if the person, apart from your husband, that you loved the most did this?
If your best friend tried it on and said, oh, this is so nice! What do you think of it on me?:

Your best friend/ loved one, whoever, maybe have do e bad shit rhY you don't know about. What about their ' negative energy'

Welshwhales · 11/05/2025 13:11

Maybe a bit annoying but without your mother in law your fiancée wouldn't be here !

FigTreeInEurope · 11/05/2025 13:08

Who does she think she is.. Gollum? I feel less strongly about engagement rings, but a wedding ring is a symbol of a sacred bond, and i wouldn't be happy about anyone else wearing my wedding ring. I can understand why it feels tainted. I suspect reinforcing your boundries will be a full-time job with this one. The world needs a spouse based version of NATO to keep these pesky MIL's at bay. In the ancient Wiccan tradition, women would place their rings on a piece of rose quartz, and repeat "fuck you mother in law" in Gallic, three times whilst smudging with burning mugwort, and listening to Clannad. Try that maybe?

Onering · 11/05/2025 12:18

I just want to say, when I said I believe in bad energy/karma it's not to the point where I believe Spiritual cleanses/being religious/bad eye. Simply just that I've seen a lot of what comes around goes around. I've also had a lot of personal experience with things happening which seemed to be cause and effect from something. So I'm just hyper sensitive to things jinxing luck. No that doesn't mean I'm going to go waving the sage about or bless my ring under a full moon 🤨

However there are plenty of people that DO believe in this stuff, and lots of people's attitudes on here come across mocking for it. That is completely rude and close minded. Let's be respectful of the fact that some people take that as seriously as believing in a God and not try to ridicule anyone for it.

Perhaps you are the bad energy in this instance, and some of the negative responses you are receiving on here is simply the effect of that?

If you have a rocky relationship now,why on earth get married?

I'm not sticking up for the op at all, but I don't believe she's going to marry her MIL.

Oksurething · 11/05/2025 13:03

personally, I wouldn’t pay any mind to it

@Upsetbetty I believe in bad karma/energy. So if someone I have had bad times with tries on something that is of high significance to me, I then feel it's got negative connotations.

I once gave someone a piece of jewellery & shortly afterwards the friendship (which had been going south) went completely toxic. She gave the jewellery back, saying she didn't want it. I rather liked it, but I felt it was tainted.

So I invented a little 'cleansing ceremony', something with incense &/or candles, probably, so that the cleansing happened over about half an hour.

After that I felt it was clean of its previous associations, & I happily wear it from time to time.

I'm not saying anything happened to the jewellery: it was all about changing how I felt about the jewellery. It may not make sense to anyone else, but it made sense to me. Maybe you could try something like that?

BlondiePortz · 11/05/2025 12:56

If you have a rocky relationship now,why on earth get married?

TizerorFizz · 11/05/2025 12:56

Why leave it anywhere she can see it? How odd to do this though. She’s not tainted it but you gave her the opportunity. Look in the bright side - she liked it! She could have said it was c€*! Insert something derogatory. She’s not all bad!

WearyAuldWumman · 11/05/2025 12:53

Onering · 11/05/2025 10:45

@Upsetbetty because I know my personal feelings could be affecting my perspective on this. Just interested to see others. Of course that doesn't mean I can control my feelings or change it, but I can try to rationalise with myself if it's clearly a me problem.

Since it's bothering you, try having a look at this.

You're being silly, and I'm guessing this is being coloured by the other reasons you have a bad relationship. Trying on a ring isn't like she tried on your wedding dress.

She totally should do that next.

Hamandpineapplepizza · 11/05/2025 12:52

I think yabu.

What does your fiance make of the strained relationship you have with his mum?

Tourmalines · 11/05/2025 12:52

Dotjones · 11/05/2025 12:08

Putting the ring through a repeated cycle of boiling and then freezing it might cleanse it. Not sure whether it will damage it at all but then again if it's tainted you haven't got much to lose by tring I guess. Some people would leave it overnight in vinegar as well, others swear by burying jewellery in a field for a few weeks so that the ground can neutralise the bad karma. The risk of that is someone with a metal detector will find it of course. You could try doing each thing in turn, checking whether it has been cleansed sufficiently after each step?

But YANBU it's incredibly rude to try someone on without asking permission. It's good that she likes it rather than hates it but it's unforgivable to try it on like that.

Some people are less bothered about personal property... especially when it comes to other people's!

And how is she supposed to check it to see if it has been cleansed after all those above steps??

Ddakji · 11/05/2025 10:42

I think your relationship with your MIL is clouding this for you. I agree it’s an odd thing to do, but to allow yourself to feel that this ring, which the person you love bought for you as a sign of his or her love for you, is now tainted is completely in your power to feel or not feel. I would go with not feeling that.

Congratulations on your engagement.

1000% this. This is a choice you are making, to decide if your ring is tainted or not because someone tried it on. Doesn’t really matter who, the decision sits with you. And honestly if you can’t get past that and keep the ring, then it is hard to imagine you’re not a contributor to the poor relationship because that’s not particularly rational mature adult behaviour.

AllWhitNoWhoo · 11/05/2025 12:48

I'm feeling a bit sorry for the mil, NGL.

How on earth would that seem worse? I am rapidly losing patience with this woman. What on earth is up with her? Yes, her future (maybe) MiL was misguided but for goodness sake, she didn’t steal or deface the ring. Onering really does need to get a life.
incidentally, it is definitely not a good idea to put the ring in the dishwasher. For heaven’s sake!

It was tongue in cheek...
I was waiting to see if the OP was actually married...or just one of those that like to use the term MIL inorder to slate off their boyfriends/fiance mother.

If there's no wedding ring there's no MIL...

I have a, and yes it's a me problem but hey, with posters posting about "their MIL" when they are not in fact married to the woman's son.

If the OP is that upset about this they best be set to buckle down as there's probably a lot more they're going to find annoying in future from their "MIL"
