Is sending me money a red flag?

So I’ve been talking to this man for about a month now. We’ve done loads of phone and video calls. He lives out of state but he happens to live in the state that I’m moving to in a couple months. He is also coming out to where I am to visit me before I move out there.

I jokingly asked him for coffee money and he sent me some, I told him jokingly that it wasn’t enough and he ended up sending me more money? It was all jokes I didn’t think he was going to obviously do it, I definitely appreciate it. I was in the store today and I told him he should by a watch from the store I was at? He asked me if I wanted it and that he would send me the money… I obviously declined the offer.

is it a red flag that he’s sending me money and hasn’t met me yet ?

I can't believe how many people not knowing what a cash app is?.... you have Revolut or Swift online banking in UK?

We generally just bank transfer… I have heard of Revolut, but have never used it and don’t think I’ve heard the term ”cash app” used to describe it. If OP wants responses from US residents, then maybe they should post on a US-centric site.

Endorewitch · 14/05/2025 23:15

You were not joking. Who jokes about asking for money? Then when he sent it,you accepted it. He appears very needy and you appear very greedy. Will you be joking about him sending money for a car next?

Braygirlnow · 14/05/2025 06:19

She doesn't have to send him her details! It's like Revolut or swift all you need is their name and phone number, which he obviously has.

She doesn't have to accept the payment either! It's been a whilebut am fairly sure you have to accept an incoming payment

Offs!....Revolut/Swift ect I can't believe so many people don't know or use these, my husband is from uk so I know they are available there and just about every country in the world.

Of course we have these, they're just not popular for transferring money when its so easy to do this bank to bank via an app. I have revolut and Wise, I use them for international currencies when travelling but in the UK its much more convenient to just use my bank as I don't have to move money in and out of my revolut/wise accounts.

MibsXX · 14/05/2025 17:31

The absolutely correct response after your first "jokey"comment when he sent the money would have been to send it straight back with an apology! As you did not but continued to "joke" this makes you, IMO a not very nice person

Funny how people don't know those kind of services exist 😂 or WU, Ria...

This. I haven't needed anyone's bank details in years. Just swipe on an app and money gets tranfered to your friend.

SimplyAmy1 · 13/05/2025 07:17

I don’t think this post or the comments are gonna go the way you’d hoped OP and unfortunately I agree that you seem to be the red flag. Why would you ask everyone if he seems like a red flag, you asked him for the money and have clearly sent him your details too….

She doesn't have to send him her details! It's like Revolut or swift all you need is their name and phone number, which he obviously has.

Then how would he be able to send money ?!

Offs!....Revolut/Swift ect I can't believe so many people don't know or use these, my husband is from uk so I know they are available there and just about every country in the world.

What on earth is a “cash app”?

You asked for money, he sent it to you. If you think it’s weird then stop asking him for money.

I can't believe how many people not knowing what a cash app is?.... you have Revolut or Swift online banking in UK?

NoRainPlease · 14/05/2025 04:42

If it was such a joke, why did you give him your bank details? Have you done this to men jokingly before? You don't sound very funny, what would you have done if he said no?

A girl on my year at high school used to to this to the males, aged around 14 OP. She ended up totally embarrassing herself by losing her virginity aged 14 to a guy at the school, who told everybody, was pregnant by 16 to a man who dealt drigs and cheated on her. She then married and had a child with an alcoholic.

Last I heard she had grown up a lot, and settled down after 2 children by 2 different men very young. She was on good terms with her mother, which was not the case until at least her 30s, her new husband seemed nice.

I Don’t think they did bank transfers in the 70’s. 🤣

How do you expect banks to get cash if in the 70s transfers were not made?
Still a transfer just a different format in the 70s it is how banks work - cash is transferred - please keep up

PearlyShamps · 14/05/2025 00:52

OP, I am with you on this. I'd be fuming that the absolute evidence has been ignored. I hate and can not deal with injustice. What I will say, though, is that for your own sake, drop the matter now. It seems unlikely that you'll get any kind of meaningful apology or acceptance from them of their wrong-doings.
Your DS is now at his new school, and hopefully, thriving there. The sooner you drop this matter, the sooner you can get over the injustice of it. It's not easy to step away, but in this instance, it's the best thing to do.

The red flag is you keep asking for money.

This exactly 🙌🏼

He used to play professional football

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it's highly unlikely a gorgeous 20-something footballer has now resorted to sending random women money on the internet.

Absolutely! I feel this girl is very vulnerable and fallen for a scammer or worse. No way should she tell him her address. Hopefully we won’t be reading all this in some news articles in a few months. Please stay clear

She’s put years on him in a few short weeks.

The whole story seems fake!

We give dozens of people our bank details all the time. He can’t take money from her.

Why are people so free to give their information to others, whether they know them or not.

Yesterday I phoned my bank to make a transfer to the account for a purchase I made at auction. If you haven't dealt with a company before, you have to speak to a live person.

It took a good 10 mins to get through to speak to someone, as you cannot make bank transfers to a company you have not used before. It was another 40 minutes to actually make the transfer.

The bank wanted to know so much information about the company I was paying, even though it was not an unknown company, and I was questioned about whether the company is likely to use my info in the future. I had to answer so many questions and give details of the invoice.

Banks are very careful now of transactions we make because of the risk of fraud. It was the first time I had made a bank transfer and it will be the last.

I was asking him about the areas in the state he lives in that I’m moving to… he wouldn’t give me any information until I told him what apartment I was moving to out there?

he kept saying “I’m not a weirdo or a stalker why can’t you tell me the name of your new apartment”…..

absolutely not just cause I give you attention and talk to you on the phone doesn’t mean I’m that naive to even give up that type of information

Please seek help in real life you are talking to a weirdo but seem to think all of this is absolutely fine !

creepily demanding to know your apartment location and who you are texting ie creepy as fuck

you sound very vulnerable

LouiseK93 · 13/05/2025 14:16

I think your the red flag...you said it half jokingly to test the waters I think.

Walk away from this situation now because there's a few ways in which this could go and none of it good!
A) if it turns out he's got any sort of vulnerabilities and anyone around him finds out about you asking him for money three times, you could find yourself with the police at your door for exploiting him for money!
B) you could be signing yourself up for a stalker when you move to the same state as him and you don't want that kind of shit storm to deal with especially if it can be as difficult as it is in the UK to get it stopped.
C) you could be getting in a relationship with someone that's controling, coercive, thinks he owns you and again that's not a great of safe way to live!

VCO · 13/05/2025 13:08

Sorry OP, this is some version of love bombing and controlling behavior. You haven't even met and this seems like a very exhausting relationship already. Jump out before it's too late

HamptonPlace · 13/05/2025 13:00

Kenyaparks · 11/05/2025 08:57

How ?

you asking him for money. Red flag. Him sending you (relatively small) amounts of money. Red flag. Not to be judgemental but have you seen any of the (many) documentaries about the tactics used by 'romance con artists', not sure that is the right term, but it sounds like you have.. (and not to say that you are vulnerable (i have no idea of your circumstances!) but this seems suspicious, and to be 'hunting' from somewhere far away seems dodgy...
