To think forced starvation is just plain evil!

On the BBC today. The UN has condemned using man made starvation as a war tactic. Surely we can come to a general consensus that whatever you think about the conflict, Israel's actions here are just plain evil?

I’m on a thread about the evils of starving civilians

What a shock, people don’t want to be honest about what would happen to Israel if it stopped defending itself.

Youd be on a thread about “Remember when there were Jews in the world” if that happened FWIW.

JandamiHash · 11/05/2025 12:08

DrPrunesqualer · 11/05/2025 12:04

And yet people have voted to a very direct question.

No one is forced to vote. If they vote they believe one way or the other.
21% believe the starvation of civilians is not evil.
Thankfully 79% believe it is evil

If some are unsure, as the question may be more far reaching, then they can decide not to vote and discuss instead.
If mumsnetters are voting they have made their decision.

This thread would have been interesting had it not been about Israel and Gaza.
I wonder then what the %s would be ?

Then the responses would be “We need more than that OP”.

The assumption that everyone who’ve voted YABU must love starving children is very odd and obtuse indeed

Israel has already won decisively. They just want to make Gaza completely uninhabitable for the Palestinians. What does a post-surrender Gaza look like for the Palestinians under an ultra right-wing Messianic government?

They have not won. A powerful wealthy and well resourced terrorist organisation is operating next door to them, with the key aim of exterminating all Jews. That’s not winning until the power is taken away from them or they all hopefully die.

DrPrunesqualer · 11/05/2025 12:05

JandamiHash · 11/05/2025 12:03

No she didn’t.

Ill ask you, seeing as only one person had answered so far - what do you think will happen if Israel is disarmed?

Is the destruction of homes and theft of land “defence” in your view? Genuine question

Israel is Jewish homeland, stolen from them - or have we forgotten that?

The defence is on the fact that neighbouring countries want Jews obliterated. HTH.

Ill ask you - what do you think would happen if Israel laid down its arms?

DrPrunesqualer · 11/05/2025 12:04

Twiglets1 · 11/05/2025 11:55

I think some people are using their brains to look at how the question is phrased and the nuances around the war and not just answering the question on a literal basis.

I feel sorry for anyone with such a negative opinion of human nature that they would seriously think 21% of Mumsnet users seeing this thread think starving babies & children is ok.

It seems obvious to me people are saying the title of the thread isn’t reasonable.

That wasn’t what I asked but it’s interesting that you dodged the questions.

War crimes are always been committed in conflict and always will be - and have been on both sides in the Israel Gaza conflict. Our own military certainly committed horrific crimes in living memory. Why people expect only the IDF to behave perfectly is beyond me and little to do with the fact Israel still needs to defend itself.

People expect the armies of civilised 1st world countries not to commit war crimes. Hamas is a terrorist organisation and they have behaved like terrorists. People expect behaviour in accordance with international law from the IDF particularly as it has previously been described as 'the most moral army in the world'.

October 7th hardly happened out of nowhere.

What happened before October 7th that in your opinion justifies the murder of over 1200 people in one single day, plus rape, plus hostage taking?

Goodness me you like your pointless melodramatic statements don’t you.

Recognising that a more peaceful approach is for a war to end and there to be a victor than the continuation of fighting, is not disgusting.

Out of interest how would you like it to all end?

You mean large numbers of Jews being killed for being Jewish?

JandamiHash · 11/05/2025 11:56

Thegreyhound · 11/05/2025 11:29

‘Blowing people up’ is not deliberate and stated genocide.

A war in which both sides have armies is not the same as an unrecognised state without an army being pulverised by weapons sourced from all over the world including illegal weapons such as white phosphorus.

You think Hamas aren’t an Army?

SpaceOfAides · 11/05/2025 11:27

This is a very difficult situation because in the one hand nobody wants to see innocent children suffering. But on the other hand, simply prolonging the fight by being soft, having ceasefires etc, is much worse in the long run.

It's what Israel has been doing ever since its inception, and it's what has caused thousands of deaths on both sides. Thousands of innocent deaths.

It sounds terrible to say, but at this point I think the only way forward is for Israel to win decisively. Historically this was always how peace and new hope blossomed. When one side lost and acknowledged its defeat. Germany and Japan are prime examples.

After WWI there was only an armistice, ie ceasefire. That paved the way for WWII and the many millions who died in those terrible years. After WWII, when Germany was routed, they looked to the future. Nazism was by and large eradicated, and Germany was rebuilt as a tolerant, peaceful and prosperous nation. Ditto for Japan.

When the people of Gaza realise this is a defeat and surrender (and hand back the hostages), that will be the moment they can start healing and rebuilding. It's just sad that their own government - Hamas - cares so little about them and are willing to fight to the last man.

I agree. I do wonder what it will take for it all to end.

Twiglets1 · 11/05/2025 11:55

DrPrunesqualer · 11/05/2025 10:46

The threads question is
whether forced starvation is evil.

There may be other issues to consider but 21% voted that they believe it is not evil
because…….blah blah
It either is or isn’t.
No one is stopping people voting and thinking it is evil and then explaining why it’s happening

This war, like every other war is about money, power, land and resources. Race and religion are just useful tools that the people who benefit use to justify their actions. War is simply about greed and that human trait isn't going anywhere.

The aim of the Eurovision Song Contest is not to be political
Every country must adhere to this
Israel like every country ( because they are no more special ) has to abide by the rules.
Not referencing October 7th had nothing to do with its justification

It’s not political to mourn the murder and rapes of your people

Dumbledore167 · 11/05/2025 11:52

JandamiHash · 11/05/2025 11:33

Oh please, Arabs have hated Jews for millennia, loooong before 1948 and they invaded Israel on day 1 of Israel being (fairly and legally) created. They were always going to hate any Jewish state. It’s not about geography it’s about religion and the Jews are fed up of being exiled, and if they didn’t defend themselves they’d be obligated from existence.

Is the destruction of homes and theft of land “defence” in your view? Genuine question

JandamiHash · 11/05/2025 11:51

Noodlehen · 11/05/2025 11:12

I’d rather see this from a non Israel news source. I can only see Israeli news sites reporting on it, surely, if true it would have been reported by western media too?

but, taking the translation at face value - is it not that they are building tunnels to defend themselves. Similar to what any “army” would do in a “war”? And is it not factual that the occupation has a responsibility to Gazan people and that they are breaking international law by not fulfilling that?

im just unsure we can say that Israel are justified in their actions because they think that Hamas are terrorists. Innocent people in Palestine are not Hamas, no matter what Netanyahu might say.

Who is Hamas then?
And Hamas IS a terrorist group. Not a poor one or a stupid one. The work, infrastructure and planning it took to pull off October 7th was not the work of a few poor vulnerable people. This viewpoint of “poor Palestinians” really does have to be taken with a pinch of salt.

It is without doubt evil. The Israel government and army have shown the world what horrors they are capable of.

Not only does my heart break for the 2 million innocent civilians being starved to death, but for the Jewish people who are at risk of rising antisemitism because of a rogue government, led by war criminals.

There are no winners here. This genocide must end by all governments refusing to arm and fund Israel.

Completely agree with this. I really feel for the many Jewish people who are probably horrified by this and its needs to be clear it's the state of Israel doing this, not Jewish people. Jewish people are not all responsible for the actions of the state of Israel. By the same virtue plenty of Muslims and people in Gaza don't agree with the way Hamas operate, I think there's a common misconception they all support Hamas.
