So 'conversation' this evening as to why my DH won't set the table while I'm preparing dinner - it's basically because I'm too critical

As in when he sets the table he doesn't pay attention to the cutlery he's setting out, so you could get a
Dessert fork with a dinner knife or vice versa
Or two different types of cutlery, so a square edged knife with a rounded fork

To me, this just feels lopsided/unbalanced when I'm eating, I prefer the cutlery in each hand to be a similar size/shape- so I end up swapping my cutlery for something that feels right

Anyone else like this, or am I too fussy?

I am bemused by this thread. There's an actual butter knife? And desert forks?

It all sounds a bit Downton Abbey to me 😂

We have one set of cutlery, with knives, forks, desert spoons and teaspoons. They all work perfectly, in that they get the food from plate to mouth without issue.

(We do have a RIDICULOUS amount of odd teaspoons though. No idea where they've come from.)

ThatWhiteElephant · 11/05/2025 09:00

We don’t own dessert forks, if we did they would be in a separate section of the cutlery drawer.
I don’t like miss matched cutlery either so only have one type/design.

You could sort your cutlery and drawer out to easily resolve this issue.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 11/05/2025 08:47

We have different sized knives and forks. My hubby knows he has large and I have small. He even knows that we use different knives (steak) or add a spoon is its a sauce and pasta.
Your hubby has a training need - keep practicing until he gets it right.

WhyNotUsehis · 11/05/2025 08:34

So to answer some questions/suggestions
I have a large compartment cutlery drawer, but all the knives would be together in one section, all the forks in another etc etc

By far the majority are one type of cutlery, so I think I'm going to have to dump the smaller set

Dessert knives/forks not so easy, as we use them often enough for starters and he says it's too much hassle to check which ones are the bigger ones and which are the smaller 😏

Let’s give the OP some inspiration with photos of our nicely organised cutlery drawers…

As someone who often eats with odd cutlery, I don’t understand where you’re coming from.

HarryVanderspeigle · 11/05/2025 07:00

So you swap out your own cutlery for what you prefer and he thinks that is too critical? He would hate my house then! DP would definitely get a Paddington style hard stare if he gave me one of the shit knives and forks with the straight handles. Need a curve to fit into the palm of your hand properly. And he bought the straight ones, so I can't be blamed for them being in the house.

unsync · 11/05/2025 06:59

He's a lazy arse and doesnt care enough about your feelings. It's really not that difficult to get right.

Is he one of those that gets lots of little things wrong? He's probably doing it on purpose because he knows it irritates you, as opposed to putting some thought into it because it will please you. If he does it enough times, he'll be thinking you'll stop asking.

Have you tried making his dinner with 'not quite right' ingredients or measurements? Can't be bothered to find a teaspoon to measure the chilli? Use the ladle, it's close enough. No tinned tomatoes? Just pick another can of whatever and use that, especially if it is Whiskas. No problem, it's a can isn't it?

RickiRaccoon · 11/05/2025 06:56

Different weighted cutlery does bother me slightly so I just switch it to matching for my setting.

Serpentstooth · 11/05/2025 06:54

That sounds completely horrible. No meals in bedrooms. Yuk.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 11/05/2025 06:46

We rarely eat at the table together, adult dc take their meals to their room as they're normally gaming

That is a whole new thread @loobyloo1979

Anyotherdude · 11/05/2025 06:42

It is weaponised incompetence on his part. My DH had never “set” a table before we met, but he is an expert now!
And glad to see that OP has standards - which seem to be going out of fashion these days: my DM always said that it’s important to be able to use a formal set of cutlery - just in case we were ever invited to dinner somewhere very posh!

loobyloo1979 · 11/05/2025 06:08

With you OP on this one, different cutlery feels wrong in my hands. We rarely eat at the table together, adult dc take their meals to their room as they're normally gaming and me and dp slob it out on trays, but still the cutlery has to match 😂

GarlicPile · 11/05/2025 05:24

Despite the fact that I really do not care about this (yet own two identical cutlery sets so this never happens to me) ... I've just been looking at cutlery trays. I haven't used a cutlery drawer for 25 years so wanted to see if they're still made in the traditional layout.

Answer: yes, but most aren't! Worse still, the many available shapes have been photographed with random utensils chucked willy-nilly in the slots 😱 I never thought I'd care about this ... well, I still don't, but scrolling pages of irrational cutlery trays containing illogical items made my skin go prickly 🤔

Before I permanently hide this thread to protect my mental attachment to controlled chaos, OP, here's a decent tray that respects the conventions of place setting.

This would wind me up too @WhyNotUsehis.
It's an easy thing for him to fix, if he wanted to.
He doesn't care.
I'd be hurt.

Hurt????? 😂😅

NattyTurtle59 · 11/05/2025 05:00

I can't believe people actually care about this Confused As others have said, if you want matching cutlery then only have one type in the drawer.

After spending time on MN I come away thinking I must be the most laid back person on earth.

GarlicPile · 11/05/2025 04:56

Ponderingwindow · 11/05/2025 04:41

If you want matching cutlery, then there should only be marching cutlery in the drawer.

Edited

I'm rather liking my mental video of marching cutlery 😅 but YES! If you can't stand non-matching cutlery, don't have non-matching cutlery. Is there a point to this, like a silent game of "Let's see if he can get it right"? Why would you do that??

Have all matching tableware. If you must have dessert forks, put them and the dessert spoons in the upper, horizontal slots of the cutlery tray. This is the reason cutlery trays are made the way they are: the utensils can be stored in a formation reflecting their positions at the place setting.

Sheesh. People can be surprisingly inventive in complicating their own lives.

Can’t believe you spent time typing that out.

First reply nails it.

BlondiePortz · 11/05/2025 04:29

We just get our own from the drawer, why complicate it?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 11/05/2025 03:55

It's an age-old problem that the Chinese resolved many, many years ago with the invention of chopsticks.

(They also invented fireworks - but that was just to annoy dog owners.)

DefinitelyMaybe92 · 11/05/2025 03:55

Smells slightly like weaponised incompetence to me… but you’ll know your DH more than we do. I agree that it might be easier to sort the drawer out a little if you have specific pairs that go together as we don’t know how clear it is to see. If he still has a problem after then, then there’s an issue.

SinnerBoy · 11/05/2025 03:35

He's a lazy, selfish, useless twat, who can't be bothered to set the table and uses this as a technique for you to do it, rather than him. Buy a single set of the tiniest baby cutlery you can find and put it by his plate.

If he has the temerity to complain, point out that he's being too fussy; after all, a knife is a knife and a fork is a fork, right?

Boreded · 11/05/2025 03:21

What kind of weird higgglety pigglety mess is your cutlery drawer. Why don’t you have a separate section for each different piece so that dessert forks are nowhere near the actual forks…and 2 different sets of cutlery in one drawer 🤪
