I’ve never seen or heard a parent refer to their child as “sexy”

I’ve never seen anyone having a nap on a public bench.

I’ve never seen someone cajole their daughter into the aisle at a wedding so they can be a stealth bridesmaid

All the above is what I’ve read about on MN recently that people do and have seen before done, regularly.

That is what I meant, thank you for wording it better than me. I have heard about loads of affairs and nobody even raised an eyebrow or said a negative thing about it, if anything they said ‘you never know what goes on behind closed doors’ as in ‘I’ll keep out of it’. I don’t think anyone has any interest in it at all.

Obviously for the person cheated on it is devastating. Of course they will care! Sorry again for my poor wording.

Tbf I would no longer be friends with someone who cheated on someone because i just don't think they are good people. I have seen my aunty cheat on her husband when I was growing up (she would bring her boyfriends to our house, and got pregnant by a married man) and saw how much that affected my uncle, and have since been cheated on by my ex. Anyone willing to hurt another person, someone they're meant to love, that much isn't someone I want to be around. There is never an excuse to cheat.

@Butchyrestingface
I think the PP means people claiming that anyone having an affair is in danger of being shunned by their entire communities and even their own family. Mumsnetters apparently end friendships with anyone they know for having affairs. Loads of people have affairs and I’ve never seen anyone being shamed or shunned. Nobody gives a shit unless they’re directly involved. I’ll never forget reading a post where a poster actually told another she deserved to be stoned for having an affair.
I’ve definitely heard people describe babies as sexy though and probably said boak immediately afterwards.

Oh also, people who know no other people, have no family help and no friends. Don't have any support in an emergency. What a ridiculous situation to get yourself in to. To not even make a few acquaintances at the school gate for a school run emergency.

I assume these people exist but obviously I don't come across them because they won't talk to anybody

Both my parents are dead. My DH’s father is dead, his mum is alive but she’s in her 80s and lives hundreds of miles away. I have no siblings. My DH has a brother but he is miles away (and probably a chocolate teapot if it came to childcare even if he lived next door). I do have friends I could ask to step in if there was a serious emergency but it wouldn’t be ideal… it’s incredibly naive to make this assumption. We all have different set ups and not everyone is blessed with some sort of wondrous ‘village’.

I call mine a derelict hamlet!

I can't decide if you're being ironic or are a "sweet summer child," as they say on here.

Neither lol.
Do they really lie?
Why? Why on earth would somebody lie on the anonymous internet?
It makes no logical sense to me.

AnyoneWhoHasAHeart · 10/05/2025 06:07

Every time I read this thread I find more to catch up on.

Re trans, personally I couldn’t give a shit whether trans women are in the women’s toilets. WTF cares.

I am currently in hospital and one of the members of staff is trans. They’re lovely and personally anyone who takes issue with them is IMO despicable.

I’ve never known anyone to actively end a friendship, whereas you get people on here talk about how they need to text their ex friend to tell them it’s over.

Ditto affairs. Obviously the cheated on party is going to act in their own way, but the shunning of cheats which happens on here just doesn’t happen in rl, and tbh I suspect it doesn’t happen all that much on here either - people talk the talk. I had a family member whose DS had an affair and they genuinely didn’t speak to him for nearly two years because they supported his ex. But he’s their son, and it’s not realistic to expect parents to cut off their children for something such as an affair.

And tbh as time went on it became apparent that his affair wasn’t as straightforward as all that, as affairs often aren’t. She turned the kids against him, once the parents and he started talking again she turned the kids against them as well.

yes It could be argued that he shouldn’t have had the affair, but the fact is she wasn’t actually a very nice person, and it’s naive to think that everyone who has been cheated on was just a lovely person who had never done anything wrong in the relationship.

The DC of my family member are now NC with their mother because how poisonous she was. The family member is still with the OW, IS MARRIED TO HER NOW AND THEY HAVE TWO CHILDREN OF THEIR OWN. AND THE EX IS SINGLE AND BITTER.

Butchyrestingface · 09/05/2025 16:08

Do you mean in real-life no-one you know cares about their own spouse having an affair?

I don't have strong feelings if Mrs McClatchie 3 doors down is cheating on her husband with the Royal Mail man, but I imagine I'd probably feel differently if it were my own (non-existent) spouse.

My grandfather died of sepsis - went to hospital with a broken foot not looking very serious and died 24 hours later of sepsis. I don't know anyone in real life who had it and survived.

My dad had sepsis. Spent 2 months in hospital and was discharged home in a hospital bed and daily carers 4 x daily. He spent 4 years like that and other than a few hospital admissions transferred by ambulance never stood, sat in an armchair or left the house. He died last year aged 87.🥲

Pomegranatecarnage · 09/05/2025 23:55

I’ve seen the first two, not the third!

Isittimeformynapyet · 09/05/2025 23:12

Do you mean emetophobic?

I mean, I find Trump extremely nauseating, but he doesn't make me literally puke.

An ex of mine was an emetophobe. We both had some dodgy vodka in India - I puked prolifically, but he was so determined to hang on to that poison: writhing around in agony all night and day refusing to boak. I got over it but he was really ill and had to find a clinic. They gave him an emetic that he could not fight! Poor bugger.

Yes, meant emetophobic and thought that was what I had written, oops.

Isittimeformynapyet · 09/05/2025 23:12

RenoDakota · 09/05/2025 22:18

I have never in my whole life met anyone who is emetic. It is practically compulsory on here.

Agree, have only heard of this here

A lot of people assume this is down to “neurosis”. I think that’s actually pretty rare. I’ve started ignoring the door in the daytime because I’m WFH and it’s always someone who wants to sell me broadband or convert me.

PersonalBest · 09/05/2025 22:51

monktasmic · 09/05/2025 00:43

I’ve seen all those three listed in the OP.
i have also, in the past 2 months, had people in receipt of benefits tell me what they are getting - and what it’s for whilst thinking ‘you are exactly why the changes proposed are being brought in’. One had been ill some 20? years ago and the other has a child, no longer resident - about to complete their third year of a degree at a RG uni - he apparently needs her - she’s furious that a recent 6 figure inheritance means her benefits will stop. I was genuinely agog that she received benefits for him at all (I’m quite bleeding heart but was thinking ‘good, get a fucking job’)

I am struggling to believe this

PersonalBest · 09/05/2025 22:49

BadLad · 08/05/2025 23:43

I don’t know anybody too neurotic to answer their doorbell in the middle of the day, but that seems to be common on mumsnet.

JandamiHash · 08/05/2025 23:39

I’ve also never heard anyone just say “No” and follow up with nothing else because it’s apparently a complete sentence.

You've not met my dd then 😅

tobee · 09/05/2025 22:28

I don't know people who are shocked that some people earn tonnes more than them (and that this is how they can "afford stuff") and others earn lots less. And everything in between. Seems to be a constant surprise to people on here. And that people earning a good salary/have money for things must be lying.

Advising other people to go "no contact" quite so easily and that the no contactee should just accept it and not be sad.

Don't know people who are that bothered about being ghosted.

Also very few people answer on here "well it depends. It depends on my mood how I react"

Never seen anyone wearing the hideous, expensive bin bag dresses that are regularly trotted out on S&B threads.

Never known any real life drama around a trans person in the women's toilet or other women's spaces.

Don't know anyone who happily lives on 1200 calories a day to remain slim and never has a treat or an alcoholic beverage.

Totally agree about the hideous dresses. Most of the Syle and Beauty section is a great big advert with fake posters from various companies pretending to ask if a particularly frumpy tent would be good to wear to an imaginary wedding.
I'm always amazed by the amount of posters who claim to buy clothes at Boden, (insert name of overpriced unattractive clothing supplier) etc. Most people I know who are comfortably off buy their clothes at Next, supermarkets, M & S, H & M and cheaper online shops.

ForPearlViper · 09/05/2025 22:16

I am always astounded by the number of posters who encounter rudeness everywhere they go and/or everyone else being bad drivers. I don't understand why they don't reflect on the common denominator in these situations.

Itisjustmyopinion · 09/05/2025 21:45

I have never known new parents say do not visit us after a birth we want to be in a bubble. Open invites to pop over and see the baby are the norm in my experience

Also never known parents refuse to have others look after their child whether that be family, friends or babysitters. The “I don’t leave my child with anyone” is only something I have heard on here . Most parents I know like a night out child free (and most of my friends here in London don’t live near family but still manage to get trusted sitters)

Disturbia81 · 09/05/2025 09:32

Things I don’t see and I’m all over cities and towns working with people:

Age gap relationships and marriages
The plethora of women who are size 8. Average definitely 16 as the stats say
People judging SAHMS
Parents putting strict limits on screen time
Parents restricting junk food and only serving really healthy stuff
Women being invisible as they get older.. I see them become more visible and a part of the community

Hahahaa, come to east London, we have all of the above in huge quantities!!

CarpetKnees · 09/05/2025 21:23

Or people don't want to keep adding details about themselves and their lives that are not relevant to their post or thread, so choose to be slightly more vague...

localnotail · 09/05/2025 21:21

AubernFable · 09/05/2025 06:57

Saw someone else mention it on another thread like this but all these men with nondescript ‘hobbies’, like DH is off at/doing his hobby. With no indication of what it might be. Most men I know might do something like go to the gym, game, play with broken cars, fish or whatever but it’s never this big deal that they schedule like it seems to be here.

I think a lot of women on here are too embarrassed to say that their husbands are regularly going off to the local pub with their mates hence these non-descript "hobbies"

Most other adults I know are able to make proportionate risk assessments but on MN it seems common to be hype anxious and cautious. I've never seen any children at DD's infant school in a rear facing car seat but that's basically murder on MN. I also don't knowingly know anyone who won't drink alcohol at home in case their child needs a middle of the night trip to the hospital

Goodness yes. There was a thread recently where a mum had bought a booster seat for her daughter to use on the school trip and wasn't going to let her go otherwise. Cue loads of other posts from parents saying they wouldn't be letting their children on a school bus and would be driving them themselves and back from the school trip. Absolute madness!

TigerRag · 09/05/2025 20:51

How many people supposedly know so many people fraudulently claiming benefits
