To ask for things that happen on MN that you’ve never seen happen IRL

I’ve never seen or heard a parent refer to their child as “sexy”

I’ve never seen anyone having a nap on a public bench.

I’ve never seen someone cajole their daughter into the aisle at a wedding so they can be a stealth bridesmaid

All the above is what I’ve read about on MN recently that people do and have seen before done, regularly.

Cur next poster coming in to say ‘well
of I found my DH looking at porn it would be. A dealbreaker for me etc

would it ? Would it really …???

Nobody in realise ever breaks up/advises someone to breakup because of someone who is sexually frustrated has been looking at porn -
porn addiction yes
sexless marriage yes
only fans subscription yes

looking at porn during a dry patch in an otherwise healthy marriage

ONLY ON MUMSNET

TBF I think many times it is said in jest

Sometimes in jest…sometimes less so …

eg. A sexually frustrated DH with small
kids in the trenches, DW understandly not interested, caught looking at porn - clearly because he’s a misogynistic vile promoter of the rape of women and girls and must hate his DW and their children- so LTB !!

I mean really???

I paid board and I paid my own poll tax, that’s rather aged me I know!

I had to pay poll tax also ( so shows my age) although it was my own flat

See when I was a teenager it was getting a job and pay rent- or move out. Usually you were expected to get the job at 16 after I levels. Very few people stayed on and was only in the " better off " families.
My best friend was one of 8 kids in 9 years. Imagine all those living at home and not contributing. Her mum worked lots of hours also

People say it in Scotland all the time 🤷‍♀️

Ah ok that’s good to know. I love words.

Totally agree on the rent point. Virtually all of my university friends, as well as my siblings, spent some time living back home after university. Never heard of anyone paying their parents rent. I was shocked to read on MN that people charge their 18 year-olds rent - complete eye opener.

But you wouldn’t use the word in real life you’d make a vomiting sound. It only works written down.

Dog ownership being classed as a cult and the ensuing drama llama comments casting dogs as the devil. Very bizarre behaviour.

I don't think dog ownership is being cast as a cult, just that there has been a significant change in some peoples ideas of dog ownership where they feel quite rightly that their dog is part of their family but expect the rest of the world to also treat their dog as part of their family, as if they're a human member.

Dangermoo · 10/05/2025 11:03

Mothership4two · 10/05/2025 11:03

I agree. But you also get the dogs can do no wrong brigade and should be treated the same as, or even better than, humans (even little ones).

On posts with dogs and cats, logical reasoning seems to fly out of the window for some (on both sides).

Fair point.

I've seen the first 2 examples in real life, not the 3rd. Surprised you've never seen someone asleep on a park bench!

Yep, loads of people sleeping on benches in the town where I work.

SeeMyReflection

I’ve never seen a dog steal someone’s picnic or ice cream, but for some, it happens a lot.

A dog stole my sandwich on a Devon beach last year - I was too busy watching out for the thieving gulls to notice him/her. When I was a child a horse stole my ice-cream (leaving me with an inch of cone), I was incensed. And I have seen a cow steal a picnic (or the carrier bag with food in it), watching the outraged dad chase after it was one of the funniest things I have ever seen - had definite overtones of a Carry On scene. Obviously that was highly unusual.

People L’ing TB / blowing up their life for some of the relatively minor normal things married couples work though over a lifetime.

I’ve also never heard anyone just say “No” and follow up with nothing else because it’s apparently a complete sentence.

I frequently give the husband a “nope” & refuse to engage any further with him 🤷🏼‍♀️

40 year olds getting ID’d another classic

I always laugh at the posters who think this doesn’t happen.

I’ve never known 40 year olds get mistaken for teenagers.

I’ve never know vegans who ‘snaffle’ bacon sandwiches.

Thinking that any more than an occasional glass of wine is a drink problem

This is the one that surprises me the most - the do I have a drink problem with a half bottle of wine a month threads.

most of the people in my world drink at least that most nights tbf

YourLuckyPlumJoker · 10/05/2025 10:25

I'm always surprised by how shocked MNetters are to hear someone does something differently to them.

To the point they think it can;t be true.

Often really mundane things.

There's loads of things i've never heard of, I 100% guarantee that's the case for every human. But I'm not stunned by hearing new things.

BrassyLocks · 10/05/2025 09:56

AubernFable · 09/05/2025 08:31

Not neurotic, more antisocial, but I do this. I don’t answer the door unless I’m aware someone is coming like a guest or delivery. The ring doorbell makes this even easier. I also don’t answer personal phone calls unless I know who it is and/or I’m expecting it. I don’t really know why I just never have, if it’s important people have popped a letter through the door or text instead- I prefer to be undisturbed I guess.

Same. I hate the idea of people popping round unannounced. If I'm home alone its because I've managed to carve out a rare moment of peace. And nine times out of ten it's a lost delivery guy. I used to help but some started getting irate insisting I was wrong and the parcel was for me so 🤷

TwistedWonder · 10/05/2025 09:55

DontReplyIWillLie · 09/05/2025 23:09

A lot of people assume this is down to “neurosis”. I think that’s actually pretty rare. I’ve started ignoring the door in the daytime because I’m WFH and it’s always someone who wants to sell me broadband or convert me.

Agree. I’m not neurotic or ‘scared’ but I don’t know anyone in my world who randomly turns up unexpectedly on my doorstep so if my doorbell rings and I’m not expecting a delivery, there’s no reason I need to open the door.

Absolutely everyone in my life calls or texts ahead to see if I’m at home and free before setting out to potentially waste their time.

XenoBitch · 08/05/2025 23:44

I have also never heard anyone, in the comfort of their own garden, talk about all the benefits and PIP they get, and say how they lie about getting it... all in earshot of neighbours and anyone walking past their house.

oh I’ve heard that at least 3 times in the last week…

AnyoneWhoHasAHeart · 10/05/2025 09:26

DreamTheMoors · 10/05/2025 07:16

Neither lol.
Do they really lie?
Why? Why on earth would somebody lie on the anonymous internet?
It makes no logical sense to me.

They do, all the time.

I read somewhere that something like 80% of deaths announced on the internet aren’t real.

I imagine there are people on MN whose death people have mourned after being told by a relative posting here that it’s happened weren’t real, I know someone who invented several personas online, befriended people on WhatsApp/messenger and then killed off the persona just as they were getting close.

There have been people on here who have made up premature births, miscarriages, child illnesses. They do it because it gives them attention and gives them a sense of validation.

It’s much easier to lie on the internet because it’s anonymous. Nobody knows who you are or is ever likely to find out, so why not.

And there will also be people living out their life which they would like to have, a big house, loads of kids, rich husband, while meanwhile they’re living in a two bed flat with an army of cats and are still a virgin.

Basically you can be whoever or whatever you want online.

Same, my doorbell is switched off when I am wfh and 9 times out of 10 I forget to switch it back on when I finish

Even though I am home during the day, I will still get any deliveries sent to a place I can click and collect so I am not having to answer the door when I am working

Nothing to do with being strange, more because I am busy
