Evacuation wouldn’t happen now would it?

Just watching about evacuation. I initially thought that definitely wouldn’t happen now. But then I remembered how we all did as we were told during Covid even when it meant not visiting relatives etc and I wonder if it could happen

I don’t think we’d ever send unaccompanied little children to live with total strangers that just chose them from a railway station lineup, no. Older kids to extended family or friends of friends, maybe.

But with such a predominantly urban population these days, a lack of self sufficiency in food, heavy reliance on electricity and technology for everything (banking for a start) and the likelihood of nuclear retaliation, any threat would no doubt look extremely different to WWII anyway. And if it’s proposed evacuation over a substantial nuclear threat I’d actually rather head towards the threat and get whatever is coming over with quickly - it won’t be worth surviving.

Considering the next world war would most likely be a nuclear-level event, I’d want my DC to stay with me and their dad in London. Better to be together in the blast zone than them waiting for the poisonous cloud to reach them in the countryside knowing we were already dead.

I imagine cuddling dd and dcat, titanic couple style 🥺

Maybe i should get some more food in, in case of a cyber attack

And have back up batteries etc

Will stock up on payday

I'm already laughing at the ridiculousness of my comment.

Mooselooseinmyhoose · 08/05/2025 21:23

I think you're right to say it would never be done in the same way.. as in kids with labels around their necks handed off one by one in a random village with no safeguarding checks etc.

I also agree that modern war would likely be nuclear and then there's no real benefit but in terms of population movement for reasons of safety of course it would happen if necessary. We also took in a Ukrainian family for this reason but it obviously wasn't just kids.

I really can't see that even if it were necessary o evacuate that they'd separate children with a medical/developmental need to be with a trusted carer from both parents. If nothing else, who on earth would take them? They would evacuate you with her.

Kind hearted people would take people in and hotels, holiday camps etc would be used We did it twice for Ukranian families, so we'd certainly do it again for example.

😔 I'd be so useless, you should've seen me during the pandemic, the very opposite of the blitz spirit

Just watching piers Morgan shouting at politicians and crying

Must have been so harrowing

Anddrumrollplease · 08/05/2025 21:21

Yes I don’t think evacuation would be necessary because of the type of threat. It would either be cyber attack or nuclear. Neither would have any warning.

londongirl12 · 08/05/2025 21:20

I think war would be so different now. There wouldn’t be hundreds of bombers flying overhead. Just one plane dropping a nuclear bomb. Absolutely terrifying.

Arlanymor · 08/05/2025 21:19

Well it would depend on the type of warfare wouldn’t it. Evacuation due to Luftwaffe is very different compared to evacuation due to nuclear threat.

I worry about it all the time

Dd is autistic - what would happen to her 🥺

We live in London as well. Where would we all evacuate to, is there enough room in the countryside

God 🥺🥺

I think if you lived in a city where there was a risk of airstrikes, you'd gladly allow your children to be evacuated. It would likely be organised very differently now with regard to safeguarding. Also many people would be able to go with them and work remotely. Tbh though if the UK was ever in a conflict the scale of WW2 again, evacuation would be the least of our worries.

Paaseitjes · 08/05/2025 21:06

It's effectively what's happened in Ukraine with women and children leaving for Poland and other countries.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 08/05/2025 21:06

It certainly could happen. People in cities will not want to be there if we are at war. Missiles and bombs are much more powerful than they were in the 40s.

TesChique · 08/05/2025 21:04

In such circumstances again, we would, again, do as we were told.

It is human nature.
