Sick of vile, rude teenagers

DD was learning about VE Day at school and got wine a few of her friends would be going down to the war memorial this afternoon for the remembrance event. She asked if we could go so I said I would walk her there for 20 minutes so she could quietly see what was going on before bedtime (it’s just round the corner).

We arrived but there was a group of about 8 teenagers sat in the middle of the square making an absolute scene of themselves. Shouting obscenities, vaping, running around, showing off to each other and rolling about on the floor. After 10 minutes of this, having seen the exasperation on the faces of some very elderly people who clearly felt too vulnerable to call them out, I went over and told them to stop embarrassing themselves and to go if they were just there to make a scene. Of course they carried on (although a few seemed to back down). They actually looked shocked like they’d never been told off in their lives. They probably hadn’t.

I’m just so sick of it. These types are everywhere. They’re absolute losers who will likely do nothing with their lives and cost us all a fortune. I know it’s not PC to say it but it’s true - I feel like these types are everywhere, bullying people who are unlikely to respond while leeching off the state.

I absolutely accept teenagers act out and fully expect that (in a secretive and limited way), but this was just so disrespectful and it was so disheartening to see yet another event ruined by yobbos.

I expect I’ll be told IABU.

Ha! Good on you OP.
Some of the teenage feral kids around here are just out of control and something has to be said sometimes.
Those that don't experience the behaviour of some of these kids don't understand what they are capable of...

TalkToTheHand123 · 08/05/2025 19:13

Those at the local park and friends with the neighbours teen children are all immature, rude and ignorant. Vulgar language, vulgar behaviour.

I would becareful approaching youths as a lot of them carry knives.

ByeByeByeee · 08/05/2025 19:12

There are teenagers and teenagers. I've worked in three secondary schools. One of them had truly feral kids. Some of them were absolutely horrible and I can only imagine they'll end up in jail. Obviously I hope they don't, but honestly. I think it is lack of boundaries in school and at home. My current school is nothing like that. The majority of the kids here are so civilised. It is like night and day

Anyway yanbu to have found this behaviour awful and yanbu for telling them off nor for imagining they had never been told off in their lives - they probably haven't been. There are some parents who let their kids do whatever they want. There are some weak teachers too. The worst is when parents figure out how to stop their kid being disciplined at school ("it's making him anxious, what about his anxiety, you can't ask him to do detention/be suspended/excluded gasp" - meanwhile this kid rules the whole school, invades lessons, never goes to his own lessons, calls members of SLT disgusting names in response to them trying to get him to a lesson and laughs heartily while he does it. Sorry, but anxious my arse. Sigh).

Anyway, yanbu.

I don't recognise your description at all. My experience of young people is that they are mostly polite, friendly, and drink and smoke a lot less than we did when we were young.

Then you’re very lucky, or live in a wealthy area (do you?)

Of course some teenagers behave this way, but it's unfair to say that they will never amount to anything. Lots of people do very stupid things as teenagers and still turn out to be respectable adults. Also teenagers behave very differently when their parents are not around so it could be your child out there one day.

Interesting that you bemoan the attitudes of teenagers and then say they’re “losers” who will do “nothing” with their lives.
You’re the adult here and to have that attitude is pathetic.

OP is right though. It's a generational problem where I used to live. Feral packs who terrorise communities up to and including murder, before breeding the next generation.

Yes and costing us all a fortune

Benefits
Police
Court system
Social services
Endless interventions and placements for their feral, unhealthy kids
All the while they terrorise the community and make it a depressing place to be

I work in crime and see this time, and time, and time again. It’s a very well worn path and all the interventions in the world only very rarely make a difference. It’s really disheartening

It's really bad in a lot of Scotland. Central belt, Dundee and Aberdeen especially.

I think you were officious and annoying.

Good, that’s exactly what I was aiming for. Hopefully I did annoy them.

There's troublesome teens in most places but they are the few thankfully. There are gangs of them tearing up all our green spaces constantly on quad bikes at the moment, driving dangerously on the wrong side of the road and all sorts. They are totally feral and untouchable. I do worry my own teen comes across these sorts on his way home from friends/gym/training or wherever. A young boy was threatened by 2 older teens with a knife a couple of weeks back who stole his bike. 6pm in a public park in a nice area. You're right, their futures are bleak.

Thank you. I know it’s trendy to act like this is normal behaviour and they just need a little bit of guidance but honestly. They’re a lost cause. They don’t even look right, mentally. I’m only in my mid 30s and remember doing the whole smoking/drinking/parties thing, but mainly we kept our rebellion behind closed doors and I certainly wouldn’t have shown myself up like this. I still had respect for other people.

The majority of teens near me are well behaved and I live in a UK major city up north.
When I was a teen the police would disperse groups of teens in different directions, if they were causing a nuisance.
I have had a bottle of lucozade thrown at me by a load of yobs congregating on the corner.
I did phone police non emergency, and they sent a patrol out.

HiddenInCubeOfCheese · 08/05/2025 19:04

I 100% agree with you, OP.

Who are “these types?”

Teenagers where I am are generally decent. Most are amazing young people who deserve to be treated with respect.

Lucky you!

What’s pathetic is turning up to a war memorial event to ruin it in front of some people who looked in their late 90s and probably lost friends if they weren’t directly affected themselves. I don’t even care any more, these types need dealing with.

Cakeandusername · 08/05/2025 18:53

Focus on the good. Your teen wanted to go and you saw lots of well behaved teens there - cadets, scouts etc. So majority of teens there were respectful and appreciated event. Just a few bad apples as with any age group.
I volunteer with tweens and teens and they are lovely.

OneWiseSquid · 08/05/2025 18:53

Sorry that happened OP. Unfortunately, blaming the parents isn't always fair either.

Sadly, it's irritating and disappointing, but there isn't much you can do other than keep your explanation to your daughter very specific, without predicting disaster in their futures or terrible parenting.

It is just very, very frustrating. People who are fortunate enough to live in areas where such issues don't exist or only rarely, are very fortunate.

Just do your vest for your daighter and screen out everything else.

verycloakanddaggers · 08/05/2025 18:53

A small percentage of people are badly behaved. This is not new. People have always moaned about this.

What would help is if the people who moan about it supported government/council/charity efforts to engage with those who are going off the rails.

Roxietrees · 08/05/2025 18:53

I’d be blaming their parents not them, they’re just kids at the end of the day. And kids will be disrespectful little shits if they haven’t been taught not to be by their parents

mantaraya · 08/05/2025 18:47

Well done for saying something. I was a well behaved, respectful teen but it's easy to get swept up in a group and forget yourself at that age. I remember being told off by a stranger once and I was mortified, it stuck with me for years and made me much more self-aware.

HollyBerryz · 08/05/2025 18:46

Why didn't the event organisers stop them?

An op always loses me with the word "vile". See also " 'vile racists thick bigots " "vile gammon faced right wing twat " ... Usually those types. Gets boring.

Although the teenagers in question do sound bothersome.

No one is disagreeing with that.

However you as an adult describing teens like that is pretty gross
