DH embarrassing himself on local Facebook page

GiraffePoster · 08/05/2025 16:16

I’ve been alerted by several people who know me about posts my DH has made on our town’s local community page and underneath articles posted on the newspapers Facebook page.

These are varying level of inappropriate/offensive depending on your views on certain topics. Some are outright rude. Immigration, migrant hotels etc

He appears to have only just started doing this in the past couple of weeks. I’ve confronted him and he has admitted it and basically said he’s just having a laugh and winding people up who take things too seriously.

I have asked him to stop this as it is embarrassing for me and we also have young DC who people will know.

He has said it’s his social media and I can’t control this, and that Facebook will delete his account if they feel what he’s posting is wrong, and they haven’t taken anything down.

Am I being controlling to suggest he should delete his account? The damage is done to an extent, but I want to save further embarrassment.

Forget labelling or classifying his speech. It’s just rude and unpleasant.

And it doesn’t matter where he’s being rude, the fact is he’s being rude in public in your community, and people will judge you and your children for it.

If he was coming to church and making these rude comments to people in the congregation it would be the same argument.

Online is offline and offline is online. No difference but same harm.

I think he needs to be careful with what he is posting online. If it is rude or derogatory then he needs to be aware that current or future employers might see this and it could impact his career.

This! My recent employer did a VERY thorough social media check and even found some posts I made 15 years ago (nothing racist at all but I posted just a short sentence about hating my then job 😬). Any big employers do social media checks nowadays

Megifer · 08/05/2025 18:47

I can believe this.

We have one of these tit-heads on our local FB pages. pops up on nearly every post with a knobhead comment. Initially people just ignored him but a few started pulling him up for being a total bell end and now he just gets absolutely roasted 😂

But unfortunately it's made him double down and he seems to like his notoriety. I bet this happens with your DH.

No idea how you tackle it but he really should stop.

halfpastten · 08/05/2025 18:46

Your DH is obviously enjoying himself and getting carried away and expressing himself badly. He's clearly become more political and has concerns about immigration, but the way he's expressing it is clearly perceived as racist by many. It is worth pointing that out to him, maybe show him some of the messages here. He has also made a half-arsed attempt to be anonymous and if he wants to continue trolling, maybe encourage him to up his game and go fully anonymous. He could set up a new email address and link that to his FB and other social accounts.

Deckings · 08/05/2025 18:44

Awful.
Of course parents of children will back away from him and you by association...unless they share his views of course.
He sounds like an immature twat.
How unattractive and Ickish.

It is a bit pathetic as pretty much the only rule on here is that you dont troll hunt. Report it if you think it's made up, no need to let everyone know you don't believe it

I don't agree that it's pathetic to make a comment such as my original one but you're right in that the best thing to do is report and move on.

RickiRaccoon · 08/05/2025 18:35

Sorry, I don't think people get on SM and 'pretend' to be racist and sexist. I think he's aging and becoming more conservative and his true feelings are coming out. It's embarrassing other people have felt the need to point it out to you.

I know an older man who now says (mildly) racist stuff, writes to newspapers and bothers politicians about very minor issues. His wife tells him to pull it back but does put up with it. I suppose the other option would be to leave a 50-year marriage because he is who he is.

Are you having a fecking giraffe??! People like me? What, people who read a post (and the follow-up posts), think about it for a little while whilst also considering the number of absolute wind-up merchants, journalists and trolls there are on here, and then comment with their own (fairly inoffensive) opinion?? Jog on!!

As it happens, I very rarely comment on the veracity of a thread but come on - this is dogwhistles and faux-naivete galore.

Sexist AND racist?! So he's multi-talented. Brilliant.

These are two things which often enjoy each others company in my experience.

Why does someones politics matter when it comes to their ability to do a good job? Personally I'd want the best worker for the job. It's none of my business what party they support and totally irrelevant as long as they do a good job.

I would not want a misogynistic racist in my home.

jenrobin · 08/05/2025 18:20

GiraffePoster · 08/05/2025 16:22

Yes I’ve told him that too. He uses his middle name rather than his surname on there but obviously people we know recognise him from his photo. His argument is that employers won’t be able to find him, plus he’s self employed currently anyway

Yes, I used to date one of these. Everything he said was a dog whistle, pitched just a bit too high for anyone to be able to directly call him out on his racism/sexism. The world owed him infinite chances, the benefit of the doubt plus free gifts just for being born in a certain country and of a certain culture and no one could convince him otherwise, even if he never openly admitted that he expected special treatment. It was literally never said, but so many hints about "newcomers" always phrased as 'jokes' and he never once said he actually felt the opposite way in more serious moments, even when asked; he changed the subject if he was pressed. I don't know if your DH has a better side OP or other reasons for sticking with him, but I will never be with one of these types again, personally. It's sheer laziness; they expect to be handed things on a plate simply for being in the right gang. Even the fact that he expects to get away with racism is entitled.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 08/05/2025 18:11

I think you should ltb tbh, he sounds racist x

we Have a few people on the local page who can turn absolutely any post into something about immigrants or trans issues- not hard to see that many are the barrel scrapers Farage relies on who really aren’t interested in the wider world- just these topics- it’s very boring OP and I would seriously have words

There was another article uploaded and obviously you could only see the headline and photo. It was basically a middle aged woman who was unhappy with roadworks or something.

DH commented ‘I bet she’s single’ not realising the article said she’s recently widowed…

Sexist AND racist?! So he's multi-talented. Brilliant.

Icexream · 08/05/2025 17:39

Fwiw I do think it's possible to have concerns about the level of immigration , without being racist, and one of the reasons Reform etc have been so successful is that for too long people havent been "allowed" to express those views without being labelled racist, but OP's DH is definitely racist.

One of the reasons Reform have been successful is because now it is seen as ok to be racist when talking about immigration. I’ve seen good comments raising concerns about levels of immigration, which are not in the least bit racist. None of them come from Reform voters.

Bikergran · 08/05/2025 18:03

GiraffePoster · 08/05/2025 16:21

I don’t believe him to be racist. But any time something is posted on the paper about new houses, developments etc he will reply ‘that’ll be for the new arrivals’ or something similar to that

Er.......that's definitely racist.....and foolish.

Ilikeadrink14 · 08/05/2025 17:06

Why do people like you always come on here saying that posts must be a wind-up? Why do you think it’s a wind-up? That’s a pathetic comment!

I would be mortified and really embarrassed , what a mean spirited thing to say.

BoredZelda · 08/05/2025 18:01

He is also embarrassing you, so I’d have him wind his neck in. I get trying to wind up the local group, my husband does it from time to time, but not with comments like that. Your OH does sound like he has a previously hidden nasty/racist streak, though. That’s hard to ignore.

Upandaneigh · 08/05/2025 17:57

Someone local to me made some racist comments on Facebook during a high profile event, they got reported to the police for hate speech and he was prosecuted. He was a self employed tradesman and his business never recovered.

AlphabettiTouretti · 08/05/2025 17:57

I don't think that "wanting to wind people up" is actually a sign of a nice personality, regardless of the methods used to do it.

It's what people do when they want to seek attention and feel important, but don't actually have the knowledge or skills to achieve anything in a positive way. It's the verbal equivalent of teenagers vandalising things.

It sounds as though this guy cares more about winding up internet strangers than he does about his own wife's feelings.

Why does someones politics matter when it comes to their ability to do a good job? Personally I'd want the best worker for the job. It's none of my business what party they support and totally irrelevant as long as they do a good job.

Because I despise Nigel Farage and everything he stands for. I'm not actually a fan of hearing anybodys political views at any time.

If people want to post things it's their perogative but it's also mine not to part with my money. There are products that I act in the same way and i don't feel it's been to my detriment so far.

As far as a good job is concerned I'll take my chances.

Whippetlovely · 08/05/2025 17:52

He is making himself look like a twazok but it is being unreasonable to police his posts, although I can see why you are pissed off with him. I wonder why people go on local fb groups fullstop it's all a bit cringe. I assumed it's just busy bodies on them. I'd just tell the people complaining to you that it's nothing to do with you, he's not a child you can't tell him what to do but you don't agree with what he's posting. Perhaps if they had a problem they can tell him direct why are they reporting him to you?

DecayedStrumpet · 08/05/2025 17:47

MyHeartyCoralSnail · 08/05/2025 17:28

Well it depends on what he’s saying. I do wish the contingent of people equating being anti uncontrolled immigration to racism would actually educate themselves as to the impact it is having on the country, especially poorer areas.

Having strong views about the problems uncontrolled immigration and lack of integration causes is not the same as racism.

Only you can tell what his wider views are, we don’t know.

I mean.. do you genuinely think we have uncontrolled immigration in the UK?

It's pretty easy to search up just how difficult and expensive it is to migrate here so I do have to wonder what people's motivation is when they say things like this.

Is it just ignorance, or is it that you can see what you consider to be too many foreigners round and about?

EmeraldShamrock000 · 08/05/2025 17:44

Someone could easily screenshot his posts and forwarded them to his employers.
