Sounds mad but it’s true, honest! If you have 3 kids…

Same dad, no miscarriages to ‘break the chain’, if the first 2 are opposite sex, the third will be whatever number 2 was - so BGG, or GBB. Not BGB, or GBG.

It sounds crazy but it’s something I noticed ages ago - every time somebody announces they’re having a third, and they have one of each, I know it will be the same as the second child.

Prove me wrong, Mumsnetters!

My gran had 5, BBGBG
My other gran had GBG
My friend has BBG

Bubbletrain · 08/05/2025 19:53

BGBBB

Willyoushutthefrontdoor · 08/05/2025 19:44

My 3 are BGG

TunipTheVegimal24 · 08/05/2025 19:44

Lol sorry no OP 😂

I have read that if the first two are one sex, any subsequent children are statistically more likely to also be that sex. Some men have more "boy" or "girl" sperm, apparently.

My mum is one of three - GGG

I have two - BB. So if I had another, it would be either BBG, or more likely, BBB. Neither fit with your "anecdata" (although I love that word).

Isabellivi · 08/05/2025 19:41

Not true for me. BGB

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/05/2025 19:36

My dd had G,B,G, and no misses in between.

I have GGB

IzzyHandsIsMySpiritAnimal · 08/05/2025 19:31

People I know with 3 children or more:
GBG
GGBB
GGG
GBBGG
BBB
BBBG
GBBB
BBBGBGGBB

There doesn't seem to be much of a pattern.

H0210zero · 08/05/2025 19:30

No sister has BGB. Brother has BBG friend has GBG

Flamingopingo · 08/05/2025 19:28

Nope, I'm a middle child, my 2 siblings are my brothers

Bobnobob · 08/05/2025 19:26

I think a lot of families with 3 kids maybe have 2 of the same gender and are giving it another shot for the other gender. So if my theory is right then BBG GGB GGG BBB would be more common than BGB GBG GBB BGG

i wish I had the time or motivation to do a statistical analysis of this

Bobnobob · 08/05/2025 19:22

I have GGG
my mum had GBG
my mil had BBG

hmmmm01 · 08/05/2025 19:22

GGG here!

fashiontwo · 08/05/2025 19:21

I have BBG, and I see quite a lot of families that have the same pattern of two of the same sex, followed by the youngest of the opposite sex.

I'm obviously just noticing this because it's the same as mine though! There's probably no pattern, although I'm sure that I was told when pregnant with my third, that the more you have of one sex, the more likely it is that you have another of the same? Wasn't the case for me, but there we go...

Iceboy80 · 08/05/2025 19:20

No, this is not true

MisunderstoodWitch · 08/05/2025 19:15

Nope. BGBB for me.

TinkerbellStarbright · 08/05/2025 19:15

I have bbg all same dad and no miscarriages

Nunaluna · 08/05/2025 19:14

sueelleker · 08/05/2025 18:48

Does this only apply if you stop at three? My sister has five kids; three girls, then a boy, and another girl to finish.

I know so few families with more than 3, so I don’t think so! Logically I know it can’t be true, I just thought it would be fun/lighthearted to test it

OP posts:
Lollipop81 · 08/05/2025 19:14

Absolutely wrong 🤣🤣 I take it you aren’t a scientist. I’m the youngest of 3 and the only girl. In fact I know so many families with 3 or more children and this rule is definitely not the case. It’s made me smile though.

Doesnt count - read my OP!

Your own post went off piste. You started taking about 3rd child after two different sex siblings. Then they started talking about BGB and GBG and saying BBG and GGB proved your initial point.

then you got snarky at people disagreeing with you contradicting your assertion that it is light hearted.

Elsvieta · 08/05/2025 19:08

No, that's just a coincidence among people you know.

You know how the sex of babies is determined, right? By the sperm. Eggs or what might be going on hormonally or whatever inside female bodies play no role at all. So what you're saying really COULDN'T be true. Men can't stop producing XX or XY sperm based on what sex their last child was. The one thing can't possibly influence the other.

blubbyblub · 08/05/2025 19:07

Nunaluna · 07/05/2025 20:22

This post proves it (kinda) - the 2 same sex siblings are always in a row, with BGB or GBG being the rarest combination.

But this isn’t what your Op said. You made a claim about the third child specifically
