I need a British eye - what do you think of my Indian bridal outfit

I’m getting married in July. The ceremony will take place in a church (Fiance is white Christian) followed by a reception in a country house known for its gardens. We will have a Sikh blessing at the temple the following day (I am borrowing a cousins outfit for that).

I will wear a white Saree to honour both my cultures (“white dress” plus Saree) for the church ceremony. I will then change into an Indian outfit called a lehengha. I plan to drink, dance and so lehenghas are considered easier to
manage than a sari.

So for Indian sensibilities the outfit I have fallen in love with (pic 1) is very plain and not “heavy”
enough for a bride. BUT I will be the only woman in Indian clothes. Everyone else will be in summer dresses (well maybe my mum will wear an Indian outfit).

So I have fallen in love with the colour and the fact that it is lighter and less fussy appeals somewhat. As does the price…

What do you think from an English or non Indian perspective? Would you be wowed

Just for reference the second image is more typical of Indian reception bridal wear.

I just don’t want to feel like a disco ball compared to everyone else. My hair will be very glam (luckily I’m blessed in that dept) and I think I have chosen a pretty make up look.

Indian jewellery is obviously quite extravagant so that will dress it up.

My cousins and sister think the first outfit is a complete no go.

Love number one. I think it’s gorgeous. Best of luck and have an amazing day whatever you decide.

Absolutely stunning!

I love the effort that goes into South Asian weddings, as well as the traditions.

Congratulations, hope you have an amazing wedding day (or week! Haha) 💐

MyDeftDuck · 07/05/2025 20:52

That is beautiful!

Naunet · 07/05/2025 20:49

Absolutely beautiful!

Thirteeneggs · 07/05/2025 20:48

I love all of them. Hope you have an amazing wedding.

TheMousePipes · 07/05/2025 20:43

You’re going to look amazing - both your choices are absolutely glorious.

More pressingly, bollocks to what anyone else thinks - wear the dress that you adore.

ZoeCM · 07/05/2025 20:36

OP, both outfits are beautiful. I think I slightly prefer the first one. Congratulations on your wedding.

Merryoldgoat · 07/05/2025 20:35

I hope this isn’t inappropriate but I’m gutted I’m not Indian if this is traditional wedding wear - you must all look absolutely beautiful.

miraxxx · 07/05/2025 20:34

Indian christians - there are millions of them!- wear white wedding saris in church with some bling (gold, silver threadwork on the saris) with no issues about them being less modest or looking too widowy to Hindu eyes. The wedding sari does not get the glam bollywood drape which shows lots of skin. It is a versatile garment that can cover every inch of you if you so wish.

Wear what you want OP. Your choices are fab.

CharismaticPelican · 07/05/2025 20:33

It's absolutely beautiful!

Rosscameasdoody · 07/05/2025 20:32

The first one gets my vote. I can see how the second one would be considered more traditionally bridal because it’s more ornate, but l think the first one is elegant and beautiful. It’s the difference between understated and ‘meringue’!!

Merryoldgoat · 07/05/2025 20:30

What a lovely thread ❤️

CousinBob · 07/05/2025 20:26

Absolutely beautiful

Maybethisallthereis · 07/05/2025 20:25

Both absolutely gorgeous.. I’d love to wear one!

CanOfMangoTango · 07/05/2025 20:24

OMG I love the saree , it's stunning.

Agree that the first outfit is the one if you like it more. I wore a version of that as a wedding guest last year but in a mixed wedding you will definitely stand out. The colours are beautiful. I hope you have a wonderful wedding.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 07/05/2025 20:24

Go with what you love and will be comfortable in (mentally and physically).

Your first choice is beatiful, and the amount of fabric in the 'more traditional' option would be pretty heavy, and less manoeuvrable - great for sitting and being admired, less good if you want to be up and dancing.

Whoarethoseguys · 07/05/2025 20:22

I think it is lovely.

FluffMagnet · 07/05/2025 20:22

First one is absolutely gorgeous OP, and if it makes you feel comfortable and beautiful, go for it.

I've been to a couple of south Asian weddings, and the clothes, make up, jewellery, hair are just works of art and make me feel very dowdy! The last wedding I went to sounds similar to yours - the bride wore a western wedding dress for the ceremony then changed into a red lehengha in the evening. STUNNING! My daughter (5) spent the evening stalking the poor bride and loudly declaring she was the most beautiful bride she had ever seen.

Enjoy your wedding, and best wishes for the future!

forthistimeonly · 07/05/2025 20:19

Stunning! Congratulations

Poonu · 07/05/2025 20:19

To my eye that's more of a guest outfit not bridal. But if you love it that's the main thing.

bridgetreilly · 07/05/2025 18:49

You are the bride. You literally can’t go over the top. Plus they look sensational and that first one is so pretty. Perfect for England in the summer.

Edited

Absolutely this. Go as a glitter ball if you want to!

PyongyangKipperbang · 07/05/2025 20:17

I think your preferred choice is gorgeous.

I think you are have the problem I had when I was choosing my (trad british) dress. I wanted a straight tea length dress but my mother and sister absolutely pushed the meringue as the only choice for a "proper" wedding dress. Its cultural expectations that we wear the big white dress with veil etc and heaven forbid you dont!

I agree that the second one is too much if you would be the only one in Indian dress. It would be different if you were in a room full of other people in similar outfits but it would be hard to carry off on your own.

Go with your first choice it is stunning!

dontlookmeup · 07/05/2025 20:17

Both are stunning. Have a wonderful wedding day

Personally I think it’s a bit inappropriate to have that much stomach out and on show for a church wedding. Sorry! It’s absolutely gorgeous, though.

This has been explained many MANY times. This midriff outfit is not for the church wedding

TheFluffyTwo · 07/05/2025 20:15

Really lovely. I'd think it was beautiful and a lovely twist on tradition.
