Time to get rid of the pope?

I'm not Catholic so I don't know much about this. Could the world survive without the Pope? There's no need for a head of the Catholic church. There's no Anglican equivalent. Keep the bishop of Rome job, but leave it at that.

Expecting to get totally pasted here and I accept that I know nothing and happy to have explanations.

Admins @mnhq please remove if this is not allowed.

@BassesAreBest

"Surely that’s a matter for people who are Catholic to decide?"

But why should just those that are Catholic get to decide on whether there is a Pope or not.

Isn't that discriminatory to other religions?

What are you on about?

Nice try Martin Luther.

I am not Catholic, but I am Lutheran. This made me laugh.

Helloworlditsmeagain · 07/05/2025 00:37

The op is an atheist

The first line of your own OP nails it.

You don't know much about Catholicism.

Go and find out.

This thread is so funny!

OP: Time to get rid of the Pope?
Everyone: Why?
OP: No idea, don’t know much about it 😂

The archbishop of Canterbury has never been pope.

Traditionally Peter was the first pope.

Do you want to get rid of the Dalai Lama while we are at it?

I meant Peter.

I know nothing about something….. but I’m going to give you a really strong opinion about it.

That's Mumsnet in a nutshell 😂😂

SomeDanceToForget · 06/05/2025 23:42

Wind ‘em up and watch ‘em go. 😂

IKnowAristotle · 06/05/2025 23:37

@BassesAreBest I suggest they are renamed Loser popes and then I'm on board with that plan.

I'm not Roman Catholic but I personally think there should be more popes. Maybe some kind of franchise opportunity.

Bring back the antipopes!

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 06/05/2025 23:20

Why do you think should do it?!

BlondiePortz · 06/05/2025 23:20

Well technically the same can be said about the head of any government or organisation, what benefit would their be yes they could survive without a leader but sticking a different title on somome else wouldn't make any difference

KatyKopykat · 06/05/2025 22:46

Yes he was the first pope as I understand it.

I think it’s safe to say you don’t understand it then.

IberianBlackout · 06/05/2025 23:13

There’s no need for a head of the Church of England neither lol. Why are you singling out the pope?

Olinguita · 06/05/2025 23:06

Google "apostolic succession"
