Time to get rid of the pope?

KatyKopykat · 06/05/2025 22:38

I'm not Catholic so I don't know much about this. Could the world survive without the Pope? There's no need for a head of the Catholic church. There's no Anglican equivalent. Keep the bishop of Rome job, but leave it at that.

Expecting to get totally pasted here and I accept that I know nothing and happy to have explanations.

The Pope is the head of the Catholic Church. You cannot get rid of the pope. I’m Catholic so trot on Henry.

I'd quite like to get rid of 'The Pope'. Those at the highest levels, even the Pope, the highest level turning a blind eye and covering up Paedophilia in it's clergy and rape of children is a pretty good reason to get rid of the Pope symbol that he holds. But then I have standards. Seems people bowing down to the Pope and that awful institution don't. Cover ups and more cover ups over the years. Disgusting abuse enabled by people who don't care enough to stop it because 'religion....'

I think this happened a lot in the U.S. because of immigration- so many people with different languages moved here, especially in the 19th century, that new arrivals leaned English from non-English native speakers and repeat. Eventually a British English saying gets altered.

You need to be on Pedants' Corner.

Yes, I get that. We have a very similar idiom in the UK that means exactly that - "I couldn't care less". What you're saying over the pond is that you could care less - which means you do actually care, and that isn't what you mean at all. It's so odd that none of you have ever figured that out.

Anyway, I'm just being pedantic for fun. Go in peace.

what we mean is "there are things i care less about than this thing [the pope] but not much." It's just how we speak and we understand it more like an idiom.

You didn't have to say you are an American:

        "I could care less"

With all due respect, doesn't even a small part of your brain think - "I'm saying the opposite of what I mean here"?

I'm not Catholic, in fact am descended from German people who were part of Martin Luther's reformation, so I come from a long line of people really not impressed with Catholicism. However, I could care less if Catholics want to waste their time, money and emotions on supporting a very rich old man in a very rich city. Their choice.

However, I'm sick to death of the over-the-top news coverage. Unless you're Catholic, who cares about the man? That I don't understand. Even though I'm an American who is not far from Chicago, it's 'meh' for me.

Weird post. I'm not interested in football so may aswell abolish it too.

Ponderingwindow · 09/05/2025 17:24

Why? It’s up to the people who follow a religion what they do with that religion. The pope lacks any real world wide power. He has waning influence outside of religious circles. It’s not like back in the day where the pope was on par with an emperor.

My partner is a Black man he had a job to do in someone's house. The male customer had books on Nazis and Hitler my partner still had to be friendly to him. Can you imagine what was going through his head. Obviously, he told me what he was thinking after he left.

Did he have to do the job? I'd think he would have been well within his rights to walk out.

I think the OP (not Catholic here either so have limited understanding) doesn't understand the role of the Pope as someone more than just a figurehead or a spiritual leader. The role is political and diplomatic as well as everything else that's enshrined in the role.

There's a new one announced. Since posting this I've talked to a few people, Catholics and non- catholics who have a variety of views on what I have said. Mostly expressed more politely than on Mumsnet.

So you’re saying people react to things more politely face-to-face than on an anonymous internet forum? Surely not?

ChillieChicky · 09/05/2025 08:17

Haha because if they know you face to face they are simply rolling their eyes and saying how ignorant… in their heads…

Here's another issue @KatyKopykat should there be another referendum to return back to Europe?

So much is going on the pope is the least of your worries.

Helloworlditsmeagain · 07/05/2025 23:27

KatyKopykat · 07/05/2025 20:26

I didn't say "do away with the pope" I asked about it.

Why, you're not catholic the pope won't affect you.

You should worry about events that are happening closer to home. Do you think there is a need for the royal family and if not why not.

jcyclops · 07/05/2025 23:09

I find the strangest thing about the current situation is that a Pope doesn't nominate his preferred successor which the College of Cardinals would just need to confirm immediately after the funeral. With the dogma of papal infallibility it would be unlikely for the Cardinals to elect someone else, and there would be little danger of a prolonged conclave (the longest was almost 3 years!).

In Germany, Friedrich Merz is being described as politically weak and lacking support because he failed to win the morning vote to become Chancellor, but won the second vote in the afternoon. If the Vatican white smoke follows several days of black smoke, does this signify the new Pope is weak and lacking support?

Where did I mention changing history curriculums - there is more than one in UK and the welsh one my kids followed was pretty good - though am now thinking reading comprehension needs urgent attention.

I said I did do the Tudors (in England) - two terms of Tudor history with a lot of attention on Henry VIII and his wives not once was it even mentioned despite covering the reformation.

I learnt if from a you tube shorts where a guy was taking the piss about about how Henry VIII would want to be remembered - Navy reform to how he is having 6 wives- - so then went and looked it up - the video was less than a minute in length.

There is nothing wrong with my reading comprehension. The existence of different programmes of study in the 4 nations is irrelevant. The phrase "the curriculum" is not unique to particular nation.

Yes, you said you did do the Tudors. I read that. Then you said you had covered some bits of the Tudors but not the (undoubtedly interesting) bit that was covered in your YouTube short.

My point was that there is always going to be a partial covering of any topic because there are thousands of years of history which could potentially be covered and a very limited time in school in which to do it. Adding a new bit in means taking an old bit out.

All of this arose from a previous poster trying to claim that we don't study certain topics because of trendy multiculturalism. We don't study all of the aspects of all of history because someone has designed the curriculum and schools timetable a certain amount of time which they believe they can deliver it in.

It’s pointless because @mnhqdoesn’t reach anyone at MNHQ

I've actually reported it but it seems they don't think it should be removed.

I've already said it's not my finest hour, so let's leave it there.

I’ve seen that on some Facebook groups too & I’ve been wondering about the thought behind it. Is it meant to be a sign of politeness? What do you think would happen if the question wasn’t allowed & you hadn’t put that?
