To wonder what Starmer was thinking with this one

Indian nationals being cheaper to hire in the UK? Not paying NI contributions? What is the massive gain we get from this? As a life-long Labour voter this is just another policy that makes me want to cry. He just doesn’t get it, does he?

You should be paying tax and NI where you live and work because that’s where you use services.

If Indian workers are exempt from NI contributions then who will be paying for their NHS treatment?

Presumably they will be paying the NHS surcharge like all foreign nationals on work visas?

Notonthestairs · 06/05/2025 22:57

We have the same arrangements with 17 other countries.

the drop in tariffs will boost GDP by 1% (doesn’t obviously replace the 4% we lost through Brexit)

And even Brexiteer Daniel Hannan is in favour -

It is about upping and leaving. To go work somewhere where your wages will undercut the locals. That will happen with mass migration of Indian workers into the UK on low skilled visas as part of this fraud trade deal. It won’t happen the other way around. It’s not rocket science.

Wonder what corruption our government officials engaged in to pull this one off. Lining their own pockets in the process no doubt.

No it’s not.
But you’ll believe what you want so I’m out. Time will tell.

Keirawr · 06/05/2025 22:12

cardibach · 06/05/2025 22:09

Are you deliberately misunderstanding? It’s not about people ‘upping and leaving’ for India, or Indian workers ‘upping and leaving’ for the U.K. it for people whose work with a company in their own country requires them to work in the other for a period of up to 3years. During that time, they pay their own country’s NI (or equivalent in the case of Indians). It’s to stop people losing NI years if their company needs them to work abroad.
We have this exact deal with lots of other countries already.

Let’s see, shall we?

Yes ok.
Since it hasn’t created Armageddon with all the other countries sharing the deal.

Weil, let’s see if millions of UK workers up and leave for India tomorrow.

I see chefs are also part of the deal.

Are they seconded as well?

This part of the deal is for Indian workers working in the U.K. for Indian companies on a temporary basis. It’s the same deal lots of other countries have for workers temporarily working here. Whether they are chefs or anything else.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 06/05/2025 21:57

2024onwardsandup · 06/05/2025 21:51

I think you’ll find that India has many booming industries and lots of UK professionals would
be keen to work tbere

i suspect you may have a very over inflated view of the UK’s superior desirability as a place for professionals to work compared to India.

rockstarshoes · 06/05/2025 21:56

Do any of you watch the news?
USA have put a 25% tariff on cars exported from UK
this deal reduces the tariffs on the export of our high end cars to India from 100% to 10%

This will be another thread with with a faux naive opening post & a disappearing OP!

Uk citizens have no incentive to work in India. The financials just don’t add up. UK has 50x the GDP per capita of India. Not for long though, the way this moronic government is carrying on.

This bogus ‘trade deal’ will lead to traffic one way only.

They’ll be working for their own companies in India. It’s from seconded workers. Temporarily. Someone upthread has already said lots do it

Keirawr · 06/05/2025 21:52

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 06/05/2025 21:47

How many UK citizens to how many Indian citizens?

is it going to be one in one out?

unchecked immigration.

No, this isn't freedom of movement, they'll need to apply for work visas.

Bruisername · 06/05/2025 21:50

in my company we have been sending people to India on secondment for quite a few years

there are a lot of service centres out there and companies send staff out to set up/manage for a few years

so I would imagine there are a lot of Brits going over

and don’t forget the company won’t pay uk NI but will pay Indian equivalent which is quite high so there’s no saving there

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 06/05/2025 21:47

2024onwardsandup · 06/05/2025 21:44

Because UK citizens will be doing the same thing when they work there

it’s for temporary visas isn’t it?

its entirely reasonable

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 06/05/2025 21:42

Why is it fair that they pay NI in their country when they are physically here and will be getting medical treatment here?

Why should you and I be paying for that?

Not sure about boarders? Do you mean boarding schools? Why do you want them closed?

It’s a con to allow more unchecked immigration.

Why employ locals eh? Just set up a company with Indian domain and hire people from abroad, dodge the tax due, undercut local wages. Robert’s your dad’s brother.

Just watch, it won’t be genuine capital flowing into the country as a result of this bogus trade deal. It’ll be bogus foreign companies, bringing in low skilled labour, paying them even less than local labour costs, piling more pressure into public services through arrivals of extended families, low paid migrant labour is not net contributing.

Higher immigration, lower tax receipts, lower GDP per capita, more people using public services they don’t earn enough to pay for.

What an absolute disaster and a fraud.

But cheap clothes yeh?

Well, I’m not a Reform
voter, and I fear deals like this will land us with a Reform victory.

Why? We have landed a deal with a larger and rapidly growing economy. At a time when world trade is going tits up. We have made it fair that people placed in either country from their respective home countries pay ni in their home country and can return to the benefits of it.

What would you rather have. Personally I'd like to make us as self sufficient as possible, close all the boarders, have no external trade unit that's achieved...but it's 2025 not 1025 so that's impossible, we live in a global economy and need to trade in the world platform

Araminta1003 · 06/05/2025 21:24

Even a London grammar school is setting up a partner school in India. People need to see the bigger picture. A trade deal with India is a good thing. They manufacture a lot of stuff cheaply and we need that. They also have IT capacity, brilliant mathematicians. What we should be doing is getting our Higher Education model into India, for example, so our unis benefit as they do not have enough unis there.

Simonjt · 06/05/2025 21:23

This is a completely normal arrangement for temporary workers, one the UK already has with other countries. So I take it you just don’t want Indian people temporarily working in the UK?

Araminta1003 · 06/05/2025 21:22

FFS, India is one of the only countries we can fully trust these days. It is fine. Even Apple are producing their iPhones there now.
